The Murdoch family media empire's spying on British politicians and celebrities was almost certainly far, far deeper and vile than the public understands.

Brilliant reporting in the Prospect magazine by the reporter who originally uncovered it.. https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/media/phone-hacking/65918/the-murdoch-spy-papers

Meanwhile, the Murdochs relentlessly inject poison into the public spheres of at least three major nations, not least the United States. And other media still pretend it's journalism instead of rancid propaganda and slime.

Hey it’s that time again.

The contention that using high-filtration masks to prevent transmission of respiratory disease is “unscientific” and “lacking evidence” when we have reams of aerosol and transmission studies is a display of either unawareness/scientific illiteracy (super fixable! non-shameful!) or of an intentional disregard of the evidence for emotional or ideological reasons (common but troubling).

"Woke will kill the military"

Rewind a few years. "Letting gays (openly or otherwise) serve will kill the military"

Rewind a few years. "Letting women serve (as anything but nurses) will kill the military".

Why, when they ask about "military members'" opinions, it's prominently of the grey-haired dudes at the VFW or American Legion club (yeah, I know: giving an opinion to a reporter while you're still in uniform is how you get disciplined)?

Walmart announced hundreds of layoffs yesterday.

But remember that the company has been hiking prices and raking in big profits.

Its share prices hit a record high in March.

The Walton family's net worth reached $267 billion this year.

Textbook corporate greed.

I absolutely do not care, even a little bit, if Trump had sex with and paid off Stormy Daniels*.

I care that he led a coup attempt and stole and tried to sell classified documents.

  • I don't care about it for the reasons that I'm told to care. I care that it appears that the entire thing was coercion on the part of that rat bastard Trump and that he used his power to get sex with a porn star.

I'm constantly bewildered about how 1/6 has been buried.

It was the most dangerous thing that has happened to our constitutional order since at least the civil war. The fact that the people involved have not been drummed out of society is extremely distressing.

It feels like I'm crazy to think this because of how nonchalant everyone is about it.

The rampant pillaging and straight-up “appropriation” of human-generated training data from the Internet—without compensation—is a hallmark of many of today’s giants. Now that they are starting to step on some wealthy toes, I think litigation is about to smack them down hard this year. NYTimes got a head start; who’s next?

For those folks who think the violent, bigoted white people who live in rural spaces are the "real americans," I think they're right but not in the way they intend.

The u.s. was built upon the collective criminal thuggery of violent bigoted Europeans who killed the people who lived in North America, stole their land, and forced another group of people to labor for them at gun point.

I think rural white america represents those real americans of the past quite well.

timberwraith,

And here is THE pertinent question to be asked:

Why is it that white rural people have taken up the mantle of being violent, bigoted assholes who want to destroy everyone who isn't a part of their narrow slice of the world, when minority rural people have NOT responded in that way, and they face even deeper, more frustrating challenges?

Well, isn't that something?

Outrageous. “Duke University announced it is ending a full-ride scholarship program for Black students”

Duke admits 11% of the general applicants but 23% of legacy applicants—whose parents and grandparents parents were accepted during Jim Crow.

Duke didn’t even accept Black students until 1963. Now Black scholarships are banned but racist Jim Crow Legacy thrives.

The bike shop I work at, , just got back to me to tell me that they are going ahead with their policy of installing cameras in the shop to monitor employees. They say these are not used to track productivity, but the CEO is a union busting ex-Amazon executive and he has given himself that power, so that's enough for me. My last day will be mid-May and I am now properly desperate to find a new job before I loose my house. Leads in the bike or software industry welcome in or around .

I love the idea of UBI. I only wish there was more discussion about the reality that as soon as a UBI happens, the wealth-hoarder class absolutely will do every single thing they can to claw back that money. How does anyone stop them? I ask because they did it with Covid stimulus checks by jacking up prices, and they've been doing it by creeping up the retirement age, and, and, and.... We aren't really doing anything to stop them already. UBI seems like a band-aid in that context.

Discuss.

Most people don't even know why they're hostile to trans identities, they're just reacting to cultural programming from a generation ago that designated us as fetish objects or laughingstocks.

They don't consider us as human and they resent being asked to try because we were deemed acceptable targets by their parents or grandparents. All some people care about is keeping bigotry acceptable in the face of change.

gwynnion,

We know people become less bigoted when exposed to new ideas, new people, and new experiences through, e.g., college education or union membership or even just the media they consume, including social media.

Now look at what conservatives are targeting.

The main reason college tuitions are out of control is the Bush-era decision to make student loan debt not dischargeable by bankruptcy. If banks (and colleges) could only lend to people who could afford to pay back the loans (or more accurately: if they had to bear the risk of making predatory loans to people who they know CAN'T pay back the loans), you'd see costs magically drop overnight as they reoriented their businesses to be sustainable.
