He/him. Married. Father of twins. As old as that quote. I build socio-technical systems with a focus on the intersection of ethics and ops, but I don't often toot about work. No politics or shitposting either.

I mostly post about listening to music; you can get a sense of what moves me from my pinned toots. I also play D&D and cast resin dice and occasionally post about those too.

Back when I was an engineering manager I had reason to read and recommend to all my team members "The Mediocre Programmer" by Craig Maloney.

We lost Craig's presence at the beginning of this week, but Craig was a special cat - one who left behind wisdom and knowledge rather than hoarding it as some special sauce. All too rare in this day and age.

So, if you're interested in the art and craft of computer programming, do yourself a favor and get a copy of "The Mediocre Programmer". Read it. Take it to heart. I'd much rather work with other mediocre programmers than ever again subject myself to working with 10x software engineers.

Miss you, Craig. Thanks for all the thoughtful advice you've offered over the years. ❤️

My wife is a speech pathologist and works with kids; getting them to engage is sometimes challenging, so using games like wordle can be helpful.

However, wordle with random dictionary words doesn't give the control necessary for a therapy context, so I whipped up a quick python app that you can feed custom wordlists.

evilchili,
@evilchili@linernotes.club avatar

we'll put together some word lists for common therapeutic scenarios and add them to the source, and at some point I'll slap a web interface on it so we can provide a UX more geared towards kiddos. Fun little hack that might actually be useful!

I don't want a discord server community or a gatefold 4xLP 180g remaster or a pencil case or backstage passes or demos from your evernote archive or jpgs of lyric sheets or even another t shirt. I want to drop a 20 into your virtual guitar case, and I want you to eat and put something away for retirement and I want to hear your next record. That's it.

The greatest tragedy of the hustle is turning artists into content creators and patrons into taskmasters.

I'll take a beanie tho.

Hey VGM people. 🎮 🎶

Anyone have recommendations for avant-garde experimental video game OSTs. Can be electro, rock, jazz, noise, or whatever influenced?

I am doing research for a "Strange and Beautiful" radio show.

Here is a pretty good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7HObmel0Ig

@PlayAllTheThings okay, some various bits.

Anamanaguchi's OST for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is outstanding:

Remember how Speakerboxxx/A Love Below redefined hip hop and for 20 years everyone tried to sound like Andre 3000?

Of course you don't. Nobody tried to follow their example. Rap wasn't ready.

we got Kendrick and Janelle Monáe, eventually, but not for like 10-15 years. Was there connective tissue that links them together? Was something brewing in ATL during the 2000s or 2010s that did follow on but never broke big and escaped my notice?

Anyway this record is Björk-Level Bananas.

There are lots of books about schools for magical kids: Hogwarts, Camp Half-Blood, Unseen University, Strange Academy, and on and on.

But what about a retirement home for magical grownups? Imagine reaching a ripe old age, children and grandchildren grown and gone, and one day you find a gold-embossed letter in your mailbox:

"Greetings!
You have been selected for residence at the Moonfrost Home for Exceptional Elders."

Somebody write a novel about a magical retirement home. I want to read it.

evilchili,
@evilchili@linernotes.club avatar

@catselbow My last D&D campaign featured a retirement community for wizards and such. They all lived in floating villas at the edge of a waterfall, so if anyone lost control of their faculties they could just be disconnected from the supports and flung over before they caused any damage.

My players never went there. >:|

I can finally articulate why I

Struggle to enjoy jazz music. It’s related
to the reason European classical music won’t stick in my head.

To a degree, both suits of music in the multi-suited Deck of Music seemingly require that a listener be steeped in Lore. Because every note of every piece comes w/ BackStory.

I don’t want to do homework to enjoy music. I’m glad they’re there for y’all.

evilchili,
@evilchili@linernotes.club avatar

@Binder counterpoint: you only need the lore if you need to talk to the gatekeepers and honestly you're better off ignoring them anyway

If you're in you still have a few days to experience FLÓD, by Jónsi of Sigur Ros fame at the Nordic Heritage Museum. It is quite a thing; huge and claustrophobic. It felt like being under water and being inside him as he sang and at the edge of the sea.
