Another quick round of advertising: Saturday May, 25th, @parismarx and Sarah Grant are going to join me for a conversation on resistance: Is resistance against current tech even possible and how? The Berlin event is pay as much as you can and you can sign up here: https://ownw.de/event/otherwise-network-salon-v-resist-but-how/
If you design a system such that you cannot differentiate people from corporations and bots and that’s your defense for calling all of them “users”, you’ve designed a system that conflates people – who are mortal, have feelings, can feel pain and be hurt and who have human rights that must be protected – with the very entities that oftentimes exist to exploit them.
Design for people. Call them people. All else is secondary.
"If someone needs to be told to think and work in a human centered way when they are designing something, it should be a clear indication of how separated the discipline of design has become from what it is the design is being applied to."
Today is one of those days where I realize how great it was that "everyone" (it's never everyone, sure) from all groups/tribes I was involved in or related to was on one platform (Twitter) and how it still hurts that that's gone.
@baldur@ctietze heya, my writing isn’t the best so my points are a little muddy. I didn’t intend to say anything about how it can be fixed, in fact I tried to say exactly what you concluded, the way the field has defined itself is what creates the free legitimacy. If a UX practitioner who expected to be helping users instead of marketing products to them is in despair, I don’t see the point in pressuring them into upholding some imaginary responsibility to users
I feel like the use of computation for everything and how broken everything is becoming makes sense when you think of computation as a building material instead of a technology
JFC, people in tech are really out there saying that language models will be better at therapy, financial advice, and career advice than trained people.
WTF is wrong with you people? Do you really have no clue about what other people’s jobs actually involve?
Language models can’t even do maths how are they supposed to get good at financial advice?
