It’s great to see MKBHD give no slack to trash products but I feel like “they don’t deliver on their promise” is wrong because most of the time there isn’t even a promise. Just hints and insinuations carried along by the hype.

There really is no basis for assessing something like the rabbit R1’s ability to deliver, because what does delivering look like?

The promise, the purpose, is vaporous.

“Here, see what you can do with this” is the definition of novelty

Today is one of those days where I realize how great it was that "everyone" (it's never everyone, sure) from all groups/tribes I was involved in or related to was on one platform (Twitter) and how it still hurts that that's gone.

@tante sometimes I wonder if things like Twitter were accidentally good all along

@baldur @ctietze heya, my writing isn’t the best so my points are a little muddy. I didn’t intend to say anything about how it can be fixed, in fact I tried to say exactly what you concluded, the way the field has defined itself is what creates the free legitimacy. If a UX practitioner who expected to be helping users instead of marketing products to them is in despair, I don’t see the point in pressuring them into upholding some imaginary responsibility to users

I feel like the use of computation for everything and how broken everything is becoming makes sense when you think of computation as a building material instead of a technology

JFC, people in tech are really out there saying that language models will be better at therapy, financial advice, and career advice than trained people.

WTF is wrong with you people? Do you really have no clue about what other people’s jobs actually involve?

Language models can’t even do maths how are they supposed to get good at financial advice?

And therapy? Just… 😑

What’s wrong with people in tech?

Okay, here is my take on Nielsen's latest post.

"Accessibility has failed as a way to make computers usable for disabled users." Thus begins a newsletter by Jakob Nielsen. And had it not been written by someone a great many people take seriously in the UX industry I likely would just have dismissed it. But seeing how harmful I consider the post to potentially be, I would like to nip this in the bud. My reflection is that the published post is misleading, self-contradictory and underhanded. I'll walk you through the whole of it and provide my commentary and reasoning. 👇

Reading Jakob Nielsen is not good for my blood pressure. But someone sent me this absurd content, it needs a response and I feel compelled to write. That's the rest of the day sorted.

No I won't even link to his post.

@aral folks in tech need to ask themselves more often “is this optimism or is this marketing?”

Holy shit, WordPress.com/Automattic is really trying to destroy all the goodwill it has built over years.

Selling user posts to "AI" companies is such a breach of trust and an insult. It negates any respect for user contribution that is the basis for a good and sustainable relationship.

“We have this technology, what can we apply it to?” is shifting deliberation from the means to the ends.

It’s anti-design.

fasterandworse,
@fasterandworse@hci.social avatar

@benjaoming I like the hammer example because it highlights the advantage digital products have. We call it software and it’s all in the cloud. At least when software came in boxes we were more inclined to ask what it was for. “Why does it occupy that space on the display shelf?”

fasterandworse,
@fasterandworse@hci.social avatar

@benjaoming there is also the imposed software. Enterprise SaaS opened up the doors for a lot of stuff where “UX” begins with “I use this because I have to, not because I want, or need, to”

fasterandworse,
@fasterandworse@hci.social avatar

@benjaoming it’s my fault, I wasn’t clear. I meant that in UX design there is a method of mapping “user stories” where you say “as an X I want Y so that Z” kind of thing. But in enterprise SaaS you’re going to be dealing with end-users who have been told “this is what we use” which doesn’t make for a flattering user story.

Incidentally, UX design has been reduced to Figma and its ways. So your understanding of what I said is also true :)

@rdp @tante I feel like "shared experience" is a defining factor of entertainment. Either sharing among an audience or an entertainer sharing with an audience. When you make your own entertainment, just for you, you're just playing with yourself

fasterandworse,
@fasterandworse@hci.social avatar

@tante yeah, even solitary means are generally for a shared ends.
