Debian wins.

I always thought I would be an Arch user, or Manjaro user, or maybe Void?

But no, Debian (and by extension mxlinux) is for me. It's so stable it's boring.

fatboy,
@fatboy@fosstodon.org avatar

@Talkless nice. You have any issues on Sid?

Talkless,

@fatboy Mostly problems with NVIDIA. It's module fails to build (using dkms Debian setup) time to time with new kernels.

Currently, with Linux 6.3, Realtek r8169 driver crashes.

Had some KDE crashes too.

etc, etc.

Usually if problem occurs you just boot older kernel, or install older package (and hold it) using debsnap utility, subscribe to relevant bug report and revert once it's marked as Done.

So it's not 100% "free ride", but maybe it's my "bad" hardware (NVidia, Realtek).

Our year is here!

After 30 Years, Linux Finally Hits 3% Market Share
https://linuxiac.com/linux-hits-3-percent-market-share/

GotNothing,

@fatboy Sad that Chrome OS is 4.15% Market Share 😢

jppelt,

@gnuplusmatt @GotNothing @fatboy I’m good with an immutable as a gateway. Imagine a school district that invests in a company, say and uses while asking S76 for support. That district has full , can easily have someone upgrade any and all desktop or laptop AND have a super stable l, gaming friendly distro.

I’m not advocating full Arch or age too for school districts but , , , heck…go if you want pre packaged simplicity.

@iUseLinuxBtw the gui is a fuck up. Use the protonvpn-cli alternative, do you have gnome-network-manager installed, the nm-applet?

safing,
@safing@fosstodon.org avatar

@jppelt @fatboy @iUseLinuxBtw

Thanks for the super kind words
Glad that you like Portmaster. Regarding audit, would you have a preference who should do one?

jppelt,

@safing @fatboy @iUseLinuxBtw no preference. I would look at who audits Bitwarden or ProtonMail. I also like bug bounties - or knowing the company has such a policy

Discovered the Debian Standard iso today. Seems similar to the netinstall, but bigger in size? I'm assuming it has more firmware and drivers included?

flipsideza,
@flipsideza@fosstodon.org avatar

@fatboy the netinstall added so many games by default :/ does this version come without all that waste?

fatboy,
@fatboy@fosstodon.org avatar

@imnotafeline Nope, both the gui and cli installers are broken for me. Sigh. Ffs. Why is it so hard to have a functional installer? Had the same issue with nakedeb linux

PSA:

Stop using WhatsApp!

fatboy,
@fatboy@fosstodon.org avatar

@hhmacedo @waleedmortaja You should rate privacy higher than your chat history. If you want reliable chat history you should use unencrypted xmpp

hhmacedo,

@fatboy @waleedmortaja I rate history higher than stickers, gifs, stories and other things Signal implemented. History+search is an important combination to know when something was discussed, what's was the answer, the context of something that was said, among other things. If history is not important, I suppose you could clear your chat list or email archive right now without any trouble, right?

I am not too familiar with the Ubuntu upgrade process, so I would appreciate some advice.

I want to install Ubuntu Sway, but it's based on Ubuntu 23.10. What will the next dist-upgrade be? 24.04? And how reliable is that process? My gut tells me never to upgrade an LTS, rather reinstall?

Thoughts?

Thank You

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

@fatboy also was laggy on 22.04. The fix was in 23.10 🤪. I went straight back to , which always has fresh packages.

fatboy,
@fatboy@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber I guess with Wayland it’s better to use a rolling distro

Do you partition your browsing across multiple browsers?
One browser for logins, one for general browsing etc?

@fatboy One browser for professional purposes and one browser voor private purposes.

You know how many Linux distros there are?

Imagine we had so many web browsers to choose from?

One can dream

sweatshirt,

@fatboy I’ve made my own and just keep updating it based on what isn’t working at that moment lol.

goose,

@fatboy I was getting to know konqueror yesterday.

Most days duckduckgo is my default on Android (just for the swirly button 😄).

If I see Chrome I will attempt to delete it.

Firefox is the basis of industry standards to me. I poke around minimally to see if stuff works on Chrome when it's mandatory.

Edge is a go to for Windows devices.

Browsers give good bloat tho. If my IDE supports web, HTML, ... let's see what happens

If you want to throw some browser names out there feel free!

Seriously, fuck HP.

HP has found a new way to add ink cartridge DRM to your printer

gpowerf,

@fatboy I couldn’t agree more. Printers in general are some of the worst products we endure on a day to day basis, and it’s all down the manufacturers trying their best to screw the consumer.

@arnaud_tabarly@mastodon.social avatar

@fatboy 😆 👏

Suiseiseki,

@fatboy Yes, microsoft eventually realized people were escaping to GNU/Linux at an increasing rate and they determined they needed to convince many suckers to stay.

As a result, they determined that they needed to port GNU (and GNU clones like BusyBox) to windows and make that available is a carefully restricted form.

A proprietary trick they successfully pulled off was "WSL1", was yet another case of calling GNU, "Linux", as it doesn't have Linux in it (it's pretty much reverse of WINE, that being GNU plus a translator of Linux SYSCALLs to windows ones), which is pretty similar to Cygwin except re-compiling software with a windows port of gcc isn't required (MinGW).

"WSL2" meanwhile is just glorified GNU/Linux and BusyBox/Linux VMs, offering nothing over what Virtualbox has offered for years.

Do you use the No Script extension?
Or do you use the uMatrix extension? #noscript #firefox

MsDropbear84,

@fatboy I used #uMatrix for years, but changed to #uBlockOrigin once @gorhill archived his uM project.
