@DrTCombs @gspeng @BrentToderian yes! I keep seeing an ad for an e-cargo bike where a dad and kid are zipping along without pedaling...

which I'll admit bugged me at first, but then I remembered someone saying that this is still better than them driving even if they never pedal!

I had my last regular day working at the Cycling Center, so how about a brief rundown on adaptive bikes!

I was hired to work for Outdoors for All in the ACC for May-Sept, and I'd like to document my crash course on working to get people with disabilities or injuries out and about on an .

So what IS ? Follow along and AMA!

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

I’ll preface this by saying I’m approaching this as a way of sharing the knowledge and understanding from an Adaptive Cycling Center with 10 years of operation.

This has involved listening to people’s needs and preferences, and I’m simply sharing what has worked for many people.

It’s important to listen to people with disabilities and I expect others to have much more to add!

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

Bikes are a great way for almost anyone to move around and participate in outdoor activities.

Many times a bike can be an easier tool than getting from transit or car to a final destination.

People with a disability or injury can use bicycles that are adapted to their needs.

Adaptations are different ways to adjust the basic bicycle to fit the way we use it best, either in design or adding on extra features.

People can use an adaptation to ride on their own or with others.

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

The simplest is adjusting the basic design to be more stable, such as a low-step-through frame which is much more forgiving for the person riding. This can help for getting on, and when you need to put your foot down to catch yourself.

A tricycle, or 3-wheeled bike, can help even more with balance.

A can be especially useful if you need time to get situated, need assistance, or have other adaptations such as straps to adjust.

A long lineup of various 3-wheeled tricycles.

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

There are many kinds of trikes. Some:

Upright Trikes - in which you sit above the pedals like a standard two-wheeleed bike.

Reclined Trikes - sometimes called Delta Trikes, as you’re more reclined than an upright trike, and have one front wheel, with two in back.

Recumbent Trikes - very reclined and sometimes called Tadpole Trikes, as they have two wheels in the front, and one in the back.

Therapy Trikes - a fixed-gear trike that can help build muscle memory for pedaling.

Reclined or "Delta" Trikes - more reclined than an upright trike, with one front wheel, and two in the back.
Several Recumbent or "Tadpole" Trikes - very low and reclined, they have two wheels in the front, and one in the back.
Several Therapy Trikes in the rain - fixed-gear tricycles in which the pedals move when the trike moves, to help build muscle memory for pedaling.

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

Another type are - set up so the rider controls and provides movement with their hands. This can include movement, turning, and breaking.

These can be good for people who use wheelchairs, but many people can make good use of a handcycle.

These can be set up similar to any of the previously described types of trikes. There can be upright, reclined, and even e-assist mountain handcycles!

In August my family did an 8-day camping trip in Southern Ontario, completely car-free. We left our home in Toronto and my parents left their home in Niagara on bikes, and we did this lovely loop along the shore of Lake Erie. A thread about our trip!

I was driving the speed limit, north on 14th tonight (I know, weird) and a guy in a pick up truck sped past me, over the speed bumps, immediately before the intersection at Hill and 14th.

Dude was:

  1. speeding
  2. in the oncoming lane of traffic
  3. through an intersection
  4. in front of an elementary school
  5. at night without his headlights on

This should qualify for immediate license suspension.

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@owen if you don’t already have a dashcam, I highly recommend a Garmin. Push to record, includes what just happened, and shows your speed.

what's a good tool for managing/sharing social media posts for a couple/few volunteers? Can you get one app to author and schedule posts on different platforms?

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@enobacon If you pick one social media to start from, I’m a big fan of automating X-posts with IFTTT. https://ifttt.com/

I’m not current on this, but Hootsuite handled multiple users pretty well (not sure how $$ now).

This week, Science published a stunningly irresponsible news story entitled "Fake scientific papers are alarmingly common" and claiming that upward of 30% of the scientific literature is fake.

https://www.science.org/content/article/fake-scientific-papers-are-alarmingly-common

Below, the first two paragraphs of the story.

Headline and intro notwithstanding, the story itself later notes that the detector doesn't actually work and flags nearly half of real papers as fake. Does the reporter just not understand that?
