fichek,

@PKB @john @paul @khaost I agree there are certain use cases itโ€™s better at than Macs. Thing is, all of the hardware revisions havenโ€™t really made any new use cases possible since the original Pro and Pencil, or improved existing ones much beyond being a bit faster than fast enough. It took over a decade to let us use a few more generic USB device types and that, like many other limits (including the awful Files app), is all just software holding this stupidly powerful slab of glass back.

Transferring files between two Macs can be straightforward and speedy using various methods using a cable. Here are the options that users have.

Iโ€™ve got a great product idea for Apple. Itโ€™s a market that can bring in recurring revenue through consumables. One that has a variety of existing poor products with bad user interfaces, buggy software, and privacy issues.

Today the internet has brought me a thread of people on Twitter complaining about PCalc being featured on the Vision Pro store:

fichek,
@fichek@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson I mean, they do have a point about lack of apps. And to an average person that doesnโ€™t know how powerful PCalc is or that you spent over 2 decades perfecting it, bringing it to new platforms and never charging for an upgrade, I imagine it can look crazy when theyโ€™re used to everything being 0-0.99 money units ๐Ÿ˜”

fichek,
@fichek@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig you can now get these really easily as a non-US citizen from apple.com, just need a fake US billing address (find any restaurant on Apple Maps) and use a CC with no strict address verification (like Revolut).

jamesthomson, to random

Apple very nicely listed PCalc as one of the โ€œmust haveโ€ Apple Vision Pro compatible iPhone and iPad apps at the end of this video.

However, the iOS version isnโ€™t listed on the Vision Pro App Store any more, because the native visionOS app is now there instead.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Tim Cook for ruining his video.

Will there be more third-party apps on day one of the visionOS App Store than day one of the iOS App Store (about 500)?

My gut says yes, because there are just so many more developers out there now, but I don't know exactly how much money I would be willing to wager on it!

(EDIT: Excluding existing apps running in compatibility mode, obviously)

fichek,
@fichek@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson back in the day I knew a handful of iPhone OS devs and they worked on ~10 of day one App Store apps. These days I know hundreds of iOS devs and afaik 3 of them (you included) are releasing a native VisionOS app on day one. The excitement I'm seeing for Vision Pro in my circles is even lower than it was for Apple Watch. Any idea how many apps the Watch App Store had on day one?

I get so sick of seeing debates about Apple vs EU regulation on here because the arguments on both sides never seem to get beyond the incredibly facile level that makes me think nobody involved has thought about it for more than a nanosecond.

For example:

Facile pro-Apple argument: "Apple doesn't have a monopoly, you are free to choose other app stores"

No, you are free to choose other app store. Singular. Apple and Google have a duopoly, and both stores have near-identical restrictions.

fichek,
@fichek@mastodon.social avatar

@_inside @nicklockwood not only are scam apps on the app store, they are guaranteed to stay there since IAP gives them one-tap access to uneducated usersโ€™ money. If they move out, people arenโ€™t gonna just give them full CC details.

The longer I work, the more I become convinced that the main five superpowers you can have as an engineer are:

a) Empathy for customers โ€“ their experience is all that matters

b) Understanding UX expectations. Eg the iOS HIG, including a11y

c) Forming a mind map of the software you work on, so you can navigate and predict the outcome of changes

d) Where debt is, so you can make improvements and spot risk

e) How to use the above to "get to yes" so you're not blocking, you're enabling

fichek,
@fichek@mastodon.social avatar

@kyleve Iโ€™ve been looking for an iOS dev job that aligns with those values at least partially for over a year now. I had to take a job in a completely unrelated field to pay the bills. This toot pretty much nails why everything went to crap: https://tech.lgbt/@chrisisgr8/111359545610778911

Any armchair lawyers out there want to tackle this one?

A customer in Europe is asking if I can issue them an invoice for an IAP because their tax office is rejecting Apple's invoice as it does not include their VAT number. Apple has said it cannot provide an invoice with VAT.

Superficially, I'd like to be helpful, but also seems technically inaccurate since they are doing business with Apple, not my entity directly, in an App Store transaction.

fichek,
@fichek@mastodon.social avatar

@agiletortoise thereโ€™s nothing you can do as they bought your app from Apple. And speaking as an EU company owner, you donโ€™t really need VAT on your invoice as long as you can explain it as business expense. It sure makes things easier if you have a proper VAT invoice, but itโ€™s not the end of the world if you donโ€™t.

Why is Apple financially supporting Twitter for something like this? Just stick it up on YouTube or make it free on the TV+ or iTunes or any of their half dozen other platforms.
