Does anybody know if there’s a traditional composite material that behaves something like fibreglass? As in fibre/fabric laid up in a binder of some sort to make a stiff material in arbitrary forms.

Paper mache is one but it’s too weak (I think, maybe there's a super version?). I'm considering things like cotton or flax in casein glue or pine resin... but I doubt it will work.

(And my last casein glue experiment stunk like rotten milk for weeks!)

@john

I'm guessing leather is out of the question? I know it isn't a composite but it is biodegradable and it can be shaped and sewn/ glued together.

So, we’re soon finally getting around to the Duplo->Lego transition in our household. Our youngest (soon turning 2) has only recently got out of the habit of putting everything in her mouth. We don’t have a space that’s inaccessible to her that could act as Lego play area, and, well those 2x1 basic bricks are prime causes of suffocation.
Any tips for keeping Lego vaguely organised & contained with young kids? I’m dreading it going absolutely everywhere and small parts getting lost.

seconding the lure boxes (or boxes for small screws and such).
Does the 2yo have a nap-time? Maybe make that Lego-time for the others? And (half-)built projects could go on shelves or atop other furniture?
Alternatively: have the older child play Legos inside a playpen. That will also keep the younger child out without confining them.

My current radical take that is driving the principal insane is the idea that to better educate our students about social media, online safety etc. we should have them set up and run their own social media on the school intranet.

And I get why. But, why do we just throw young people out into the wilds of the internet where they are surrounded by ads, creepy people, criminals etc.?

Part of why social media can be chaotic and destructive is because too many adults hope it just wont exist.

fritzoids,
@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@futurebird

in my mind, the social part of the internet is a little like big train stations in the 1980s and 90s used to be: you see people from all walks of life and you can see an amazing performance of some sort and there might be some entertaining drama going on or somebody ranting, but you wouldn't let your kid wander around there on their own and you definitely wouldn't let them talk to anybody by themselves.

#CovidConscious crowd: I’m sure I saw some discussion of techniques for stapling excess #respirator material together under chin to improve fit on small faces …

But I can’t find it now and I don’t want to just start stapling willy-nilly!

Has anyone done this or did I imagine it? 😷❤️

@catrionagold
This is what I remembered seeing:

Edit to add: remember to staple so the two pointy bits of the staple are on the outside of the mask. Otherwise you're going to have them scratching your chin area. I've done this type of stapling on the Dräger X-plore 1920 but stopped buying those because I had other stuff that fit me better and wasn't quite as expensive.

screengrab of a tweet by @yesallcrops from Feb 13, 2023. They wrote "I've mentioned that I have to staple all my masks tighter to fit my face shape. If I don't do this, I can feel air rushing out through the chin portion. Here's how I do that! (Try pinching the extra fabric under your chin while the mask is on to know where to staple)" There is a video of a person dressed in a black top with a V-neck. The hold a respirator in their hands. Then they pinch a bit of material in the middle of the chin area and use a small stapler to staple that pleat into place.

@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@catrionagold

I am also going to share this video of how to do a DIY fit-test. Not because you have to do one, but because if you are able to confirm that the mask you've chosen works for you, then that is an added layer of confidence in your respirator. (It also enables you to help others test their masks / respirators)

The Dräger are more easily accessible internationally and have been getting good reviews from the mask geeks over on twitter. Their headstraps are one continuous loop made of good quality material. They have a nice reinforcement around the nose and their shape means the material doesn't get sucked to your face when you breathe in.

I really like these but they are a bit more expensive than the uvex and I have to staple the chin area to make them fit me.

fritzoids,
@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@travisfw @smallpatatas

Well, I really like duckbills (the picture shows the brand I wear) because they fit a wide variety of faces and have a big surface area so breathing and talking in them is great. Also people seem to have no problem hearing me when I wear them.

The ones I wear a kind of a bare-bones one with not great headstraps (they tear off really easily) and no foam around the nose.

The ones that are really nice but I have trouble getting them to seal on my chin are the Dräger.

The interest in calling Covid “endemic” is a need to say “the pandemic is over”.

Saying “the pandemic is over” implies that no one needs to take precautions anymore. It implies we don’t need to mask, we don’t need to isolate, we don’t need to test… basically that we can go “back to normal”.

Calling Covid “endemic” is not just a pedantic need to redefine the stage we’re in with the virus. It’s an excuse to remove precautions and feel good about it. It’s an open invitation to “other” the people still trying to protect themselves and everyone else. It’s a method of moving the argument from the practical “should we continue taking precautions” to nothing more than ivory tower semantics.

Covid is still dangerous, no matter what we call it. Implying it’s not is a dangerous practice.

@violetmadder @NilaJones @VeeRat @novid

yeah, in regions where Malaria, Zika, and Dengue are endemic they usually mitigate by removing stagnant water in backyards, by having fly screens or mosquito nets and by wearing extra-strength bug repellent.
Endemic is not usually where you want to be with a disease.

The joys of parenthood. You get a kitchen appliance out you haven't used in a while and it's full of some gooey golden and rather sticky substance that definitely doesn't belong in there.

as someone who once absentmindedly emptied out a dishwasher before it had actually done its job (as in we had put everything in but forgot to turn it on and hours later I just put everything back in the cupboards while totally spaced-out): it might be whatever was in there last. Or a kind of mold that has consumed whatever was not washed off properly.
(edit to add: when I noticed my mistake the next day I of course put everything in the machine and washed it.)

I forget which movie or book this quote is from but: "individuals are smart; people are stupid."

Don't blame the tourists. They're waiting for a signal from authorities. Blame the airlines still flying their planes to these places. Blame governments for not grounding those planes and saying "don't go there / don't come here".
Geez. It's the whole "why do we need mask mandates?" debate again.
