, , # BlackMastodon Those of you who have followed me for a while know I mostly post about the issue of abolition, information about webinars on community issues, and black cultural music and events. I comment on policing but don’t usually post on it. However, the university protests provide an excellent opportunity to highlight why abolition is needed in this country. 1/7

@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

, , # BlackMastodon The movement in support of abolition has been in process for decades although most people only learned about it when “Defund the Police” was chanted during the 2020 protests against police murders of black people. White folks (and Obama) threw their hands up in horrow at the notion of getting rid of the police. A video reminder of what defund means: https://www.vox.com/2020/6/26/21303849/what-defund-the-police-really-means

, , # BlackMastodon While many whites were empathetic to cries to halt police killings of innocent people of color, their overall acceptance of the idea that police are a good thing for their communities did not change. You can use a free tool called the internet to look up some of those studies. Communities of color will always be the canary in the coal mine on the issue of militarization of the police. 3/7

I was accused of being argumentative today because I corrected a point of law in someone’s post. There’s very few conversations I get involved with because I get it that sometimes people are just expressing their intense emotions. EX: FASCISM!! But whenever I see a point of law being discussed that is wrong or misleading, I’m going to jump in for a couple of reasons. The offended person can block me, its OK. Short thread 1/5

Eddiethebulldog,

@fulanigirl all of this. This is a separate and not unusual thing and Thursday should be 'interesting'. He may not incarcerate Trump now or post-trial because his really clear really well-worded decision came after the second set of offenses. Maybe.
I can hear Trump's lawyers argument now ... "but judge, he didn't know you were SERIOUS then" ... which get them set on fire about their duty to instruct client on all the possible outcomes.
We'll see.
But spot on with the thread.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Eddiethebulldog I agree that he may not incarcerate on Thursday because he just gave the warning on Tuesday, and the show cause hearing is about things that happened before the warning. So it should be interesting. I would guess any violations coming after this week could push Merchan closer to "lock him up." Thank you for reading the thread.

For the second year in a row, our japonica has announced the arrival of spring, even if the weather hasn't completely settled.

Columbia's faculty panel criticized their administrations handling of the protests.
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/columbia-university-president-faces-vote-confidence-protests-spread-2024-04-26/
Please read down towards the bottom where the student who shouted "Zionist don't deserve to live" apologized. If Columbia had informed leadership that understood academic environments and colleges students, this could have happened the day after the event occurred. The president CHOSE escalation over de-escalation.

@Yehuda sorry to hear of your family trauma. That trauma is repeated in all communities in that region, yours as well as others. Also, since the labor movement late 1890s forward provocateurs have infiltrated many movements to cause division. I can't image this would be different. Are some liberals racist...yes. Are some antisemitic? yes. Some anti-black? yes. Anti-indigenous? Yes. This is not "the left" as a unit. That's all I'm saying, Your paint brush is seems very broad. That's all I got.

In light of discussions recently this story about a protest seder was interesting. It has roots in the civil rights fights of the 1960's, so it is not a unique or particularly horrible event now. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/stop-arming-israel-passover-protest-brooklyn-harkens-back-1969-freedom-seder-2024-04-24/

I'm sure both some of the student protestors as well as the ones supported by ADL have probably crossed the line BUT don't forget about provocateurs. They are out there, usually provided by govt or its allies. COINTELPRO.

@leswarden @dangillmor
Example: members of Congress do have election matters within the scope of their responsibilities while presidents do not. This may have discouraged Smith from charging members of Congress who aided Trump with the election conspiracy. One could argue they have a plausible defense to why they made calls to state election figures. That could make a prosecution messy. A prosecutor will want the cleanest case possible. That's my take on it. 2/2

@fulanigirl Thank you for the explanation! 🙏 It does help us non-lawyers with details as to the whys and the underpinnings. Otherwise, on the surface, it sometimes looks like WTH! ✌️

Today was the 10th anniversary of the National Coalition of Incarcerated and Formerly incarcerated Women & Girls march in support of the over 150,000 women and girls incarcerated in the US. Beautiful day for a march and rally. Write to Biden and encourage him to grant clemency to Michelle West (31 years in) and other women locked in cages. Petition your governors as well. Trapping women in cages does not make our societies better. FREE HER!

@GottaLaff For some reason today I can't reply to posts from this morning, but just wanted you to know The Gothamist reported that the BIKE lane outside the courthouse in Manhattan was shut down. Were the Trump supporters in the bike lane?! 😆

@GottaLaff Not sure why the reply thing was happening. Kept giving me a 500 error but I also noticed it was happening when our server was pulling in more posts. Whatever....I'm going always find a way!

If you are in or around NYC on April 24th (Wed) Interrupting Criminalization is screening their film ONE MILLION EXPERIMENTS which is about defining safety and how to create it without use of the police. I saw a preview of it and it is very inspiring, Check it out if you can:

I posted two previous panel discussions on Alternatives to Policing that were happening in Detroit. The third one is April 17th and focuses on community groups and what actions they are taking to help create safety. I'm attaching the flyer for the program. I've posted Sona Jobarteh before but I got a chance to see her live on Sunday. What a fabulous show! Posting a duet with my 2nd favorite kora player, Ballake Sissoko. Also Sona started a school to help decolonize education in the Gambia. She talked about it at length during the show. The second link is on the school and what she is trying to accomplish.

I was watching our partial eclipse yesterday with my daughter in a local area. There's a row of food shops, cleaners, credit union and nail salons where we were sitting. The employees were getting permission to come outside and see the eclipse but of course none of them had any eye protection. We signaled for them to come over and share ours. In about 10 minutes we were surrounded by workers from four different ethnic groups. 1/5

We were a group of Black American, Asian, Latino, and various Africans . It was a wonderful and heart warming experience. You may be asking yourself what this has to do with . But it was the beauty of the human community coming together to experience something phenomenal that made it relevant to . There is a new series on PBS that also is not about but has everything to do with it. 2/5

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

The series is called: A Brief History of the Future. The host of the show presents the idea that we have moved into being a society that just plans for today without thought to the consequences our actions today will have on our future families. He sets off to talk to people around the world who are trying to envision the world they want for their great grandchildren and then talking steps TODAY to help build it. 3/5
