My 1st stress free day in awhile👍 I worked on some writing this morning. Getting some help around noon with my compost tub. My biggest decision today is deciding what nature trail to walk with my friend in the afternoon.

As a frequent pedestrian and occasional cyclist, it feels like the road rage incidents I've experienced with drivers in the Mission has gotten significantly worse over the past year. This might simply be because there is so much more traffic than before, but it feels heavily related to all those anti-bike signs that businesses are putting in their windows and the dishonest way local TV stations have covered the recent improvements to Valencia Street.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@docpop And if you confront them with their messed-up logic, they usually only get angrier.

"So you'd rather we were driving cars? Wouldn't that take up more space and make for more traffic jams and competition for parking?"

"So when you're walking, you want cyclists to be riding on the sidewalk?"

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@docpop Someone just told them that cyclists (or ________ fill in group here) are to blame for everything wrong in society. And cyclists are a target they can push around with very little in the way of consequences thanks to a car-centric judicial system.

More on how "just fill out the form proving you're disabled, it's no big deal" is a big deal, esp when you have to do it many times per year for different agencies:

Rec'd jury summons late Thurs. Called Dr. and talked to a person Friday late morning. They relayed it to coordinators who were supposed to rely it to the doctor (who I know is on board with me re my physical ability to serve on a jury). Was told I'd get form through my email.

No email as of mid-morning Monday, so I message thru

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

the online portal because the coordinators are no longer reading the email address they used to use.

Close of day on Monday: No update either in email or on the portal.

I have 10 days (not business days) from when I received the summons to reply. 5 have already gone by now.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

It's just constant form-filling, chasing people to get the form filled out and feeling guilty (not that it's my desire or fault) that medical professionals are constantly asked by ableists to waste their time filling out disability policing forms.

And there are more instances where I have to fill out forms. It's fairly constant for nearly 30 years now.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

BTW - to abled people (including folks who fake emotional support animals) who fake their way into something because they just want something and feel disabled people have it easy - FUCK YOU for contributing to systemic ableism's view that disabled people are "cheaters". You're the fucking cheaters.

Made yet another contact with the medical system in which my doctor is ensconced. I tried to reach him on a direct number he once gave me, but apparently this went to an asst. At least it bypassed the large institutional voicemail system. So the total so far of my trying to contact them is phone on Friday (voicemail, then talking to human eventually), portal messaging system early Monday, talking to human again today. At no time did anyone email me the doctor's note, or even respond to me.

Do community colleges invite celebrities to come speak at commencement and award them honorary associate's degrees?

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@maxleibman I think they do invite celebrities if they are alumni. I've not heard of honorary associate degrees, though.

Pasadena City College had banners hanging of its alumni, like Eddie Van Halen, Jackie Robinson, Max Robinson, et al. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasadena_City_College#Alumni

This is why, if you can afford it, heatwave mitigation will pay off sooner rather than later:

Al Jazeera: Record heat index of 62.3C scorches Rio de Janeiro

"A heatwave stifling Brazil has set new records with Rio de Janeiro’s heat index hitting 62.3 degrees Celsius (144.1 degrees Fahrenheit), the highest in a decade, weather authorities say.

The heat index measures what a temperature feels like by taking into account humidity."

@ai6yr A big problem is that so many people now have little control over their living environment. They're either renters or living in a vehicle or living on the street.

@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

I called the CA State Insurance Commissioner's office to complain about AAA insisting that my personal wheelchair-accessible van is a "commercial vehicle" and that they'd refuse to insure it. The operator was nice and told me how to start a complaint.

They were closing up the call when I mentioned that as a disabled person I am also low income and am now in a quandary because I cannot free up $ by selling my old car until I can insure the new (used) one. She then referred me to

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

California's Low Cost Auto Insurance. I'm a little disturbed that once I disclosed I'm disabled, this wasn't immediately mentioned to me as an option. Most disabled people I know are low income. Society's disability policing impoverishes you even if you started out middle class...

In any case, I've updated @ucaccessnow "Benefits Counseling" document to add info for this program. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Um9UEJizN_3-kEvkDedRdaPwOyR5PsLv3JKslFI-djg/edit?usp=sharing

Interesting, an ad hoc VW meet up at a taco truck at the Home Depot. Didn't think an old beaten up Westfalia would be $15K, but I guess they are unique.

@ai6yr Yup. Vans in general are going up in price and there are always going to be retro fans.

Like, I'm so tired now that I was going to post a reply to something then realized I wasn't up for typing a clarification if that was needed. So I just didn't send it. Bleagh.

Garage sale buy for $3. Hope it will fit the mountain bike as an in between a backpack and the bicycle trailer. I see people on the Fediverse strap pizzas on these. 😅
