Another example of how hearing folks can assume that something's hearable when it's not... I can actually make out a largely unmic'd audience member in this video of a con panel, but YouTube auto-captions cannot.

I'm a native English speaker. It's quite possible someone hearing who is an English learner also would not be able to make it out.

Plan your media accessibly: Mic all speakers or have those with mics repeat the question. Plan real human-made captions.

Today at Trader Joe's, they had a partly-covered shelf talker with Prop 65 fine print saying their cocoa had cadmium in it.

I cannot imagine how many people are so used to ignoring Prop 65 warnings that they just go ahead and buy.

I'm surprised a more serious overhaul of the product line and reassurances hasn't happened in the months since this hit the press. https://www.consumerreports.org/health/food-safety/a-third-of-chocolate-products-are-high-in-heavy-metals-a4844566398/

@LinuxAndYarn I read the story when it first came out, but I'm just amazed how casually that sign was put up while TJs just kept the product on the shelves.

Seattle Times: Higher temperatures mean higher food and other prices. A new study links climate shocks to inflation https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/science/higher-temperatures-mean-higher-food-and-other-prices-a-new-study-links-climate-shocks-to-inflation/

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I think the main reason for high prices in the US right now is greedflation.

But it was highly foreseeable that climate would affect food supply and what could grow where successfully and with what yield. It's one of the reasons I wanted to become a plant breeder -but UC Davis thought it was more important that only abled people be able to get that level of training.

Whether it's food crops or seed crops, they need to be trying more cultivars in more places with more methods.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr They have underfunded germplasm conservation for decades now and they're going to be feeling the bite of that poor decision.

So much emphasis on molecular breeding as the magic bullet. It's a great tool, but it can't and shouldn't be everything we do to ensure food security.

The paper the report is on is here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-023-01173-x

State Farm Insurance: "Update on California"

" Non-renew approximately 30,000 homeowners, rental dwelling, and other property insurance policies (residential community association and business owners)
Withdraw from offering commercial apartment policies with the non-renewal of all of those approximately 42,000 policies"

@ai6yr What a racket. Lobby for policies that warm the planet. Pull out of market and leave taxpayers and customers on the hook for the climate catastrophe your voting & lobbying supported...

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr This is why I'm against gov'ts trying to sweeten things for corporations when they threaten to pull out - they're going to pull out anyway the moment they can make more profit somewhere else.

Any business that doesn't believe in economic and social justice, any business that would rather trash the planet....good riddance. Support better businesses.

The most useful invention I've ever run across... Corsi-Rosenthal box.

I have used this so far for:

  1. Wildfire smoke
  2. COVID-19
  3. Bacon smoke (on Saturdays, LOL)
  4. General improvement of AQI
  5. Pet related allergies (hay and dander)
  6. Ragweed/pollen heavy days
  7. Dust from Santa Ana winds
  8. Dust from construction/remodeling
  9. Paint fumes (only partially useful, doesn't absorb gases, but helps somewhat) -- plus it sucks all the dust from the air, so it doesn't stick to your paint

(probably other uses, too...)

How to build one:

And now you know why my parents (immigrants to the US who have been here since the 60's) started carrying their US Passports when traveling around the US around 2016.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Yeah. I think people who aren't marginalized think "Well, all you gotta do is have your ID" and think it's no big deal if rights are violated in this way. They should care, but even if they don't, they don't realize how this is just a step to fucking with the rights of anyone hegemons dislike or want to target.

Look at the BS about saying Obama was born in Kenya. They'll just pick anyone they want and claim their papers are forged or whatever.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr People are in such denial about this. The training is strong. Before these guys started doing shit like that even when they knew cameras were on them, I was trained like most white folks to think "Well, he must have done something to deserve it, something that happened before video started rolling."

I'm ashamed I fell for that training, but that training starts fucking early.

@ai6yr To me I can see how things changed when air conditioning became more affordable...Houses in So Cal used to come with fabric or aluminum hood awnings. Then they fell out of fashion and I'm willing to bet it's because AC became more affordable.

Just like SoCal landscaping choices changed with the rise of big irrigation projects bringing water in from elsewhere.

I really feel like we're losing progress on transition to greener alternatives because so many of the voices (and therefore lived experiences) of this space in the US are abled, white, male, middle class,and living in cities with better public transit.

It's not that they never have good points or are unable to persuade folks - it's that they make assumptions based on their own experiences that really do not hold for a lot of other people. And they won't hand the mic over to find out what would.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

I'm not in the least arguing for things to remain unsustainable.

I'm saying that if you do not have the lived experience to know what the barriers are and what would constitute equitable transition plans for areas outside your experience, you will create a slightly different sort of oppression. And you'll make enemies rather than comrades in all fighting for a just sustainability transition.

Do as much passing the mic and listening to marginalized sustainability advocates as you do b'casting.

More on how "just fill out the form proving you're disabled, it's no big deal" is a big deal, esp when you have to do it many times per year for different agencies:

Rec'd jury summons late Thurs. Called Dr. and talked to a person Friday late morning. They relayed it to coordinators who were supposed to rely it to the doctor (who I know is on board with me re my physical ability to serve on a jury). Was told I'd get form through my email.

No email as of mid-morning Monday, so I message thru

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

I used to "be polite" and just assume it was being taken care of. I would not "hound" them. But now I realize they need to be contacted every day until I get the item. Because things just get lost in this byzantine system that filters wealth up to the top and overworks everyone else.

I'm lobbying for the doctor to just write a note for permanent excuse because (a) I've become more disabled with each year...this isn't getting better and (b) writing a permanent note doesn't waste all our time.
