Which album had the greatest impact on punk rock history? 👇

The Clash - debut album

Ramones - debut album

Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables

Another?

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock As much as I hate to say it, I think Never Mind the Bollocks had the greatest impact on punk history. It's the album that got people's attention outside of the existing punk scene. I remember hearing about this horrible band, The Sex Pistols, on the evening news in the US. Of course, that made me want to hear them.

I don't think it's the best album. The Clash, Fresh Fruit, and Ramones are way better IMO.

"To Drunk to Fuck", the fourth single by the Dead Kennedys

here live at the Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco, CA 1980

video/mp4

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock Of course it was banned by the BBC. Pablum like ABBA's "Waterloo" was banned during the Gulf War ffs. I can't say US stations were any better. I doubt that "Too Drunk to Fuck" was played on any US stations, except maybe college radio.

The Descendents Collection from 1982 to 2021

Studio albums, live albums and compilations

Do you have a favorite?

For me it's like almost always, the debut album left such a lasting impression on me, it will probably always remain my top favorite

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock My favorite is Cool to Be You. The songs written by Karl Alvarez, particularly 'Merican, Dog and Pony Show, and Cool to Be You are excellent.

My second choice would be Everything Sucks. The title song is my go-to bad day song.

Which punk rock album is the perfect top-notch record from start to finish?

I'm starting:

Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables – Dead Kennedys

A must have in every the record collection

#punk #punks #punkrock #hardcorepunk #deadkennedys #history #punkrockhistory

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock There aren't a lot of albums for which I regularly listen to most of the songs, year after year. Fresh Fruit is definitely one. Another is The War on Errorism by NOFX. Of the 14 songs on the album, there are only four that I haven't listened to many hundreds of times. It's not as ground breaking as some of the other albums mentioned, but I think it shows a long-lived punk band at the top of their game. And "Idiots are Taking Over" is one of my all-time favorite songs.

Name the top 3 singles from punk rock supergroup Dead Kennedys

  1. Police Truck
  2. Nazi Punks Fuck Off
  3. Kill the Poor

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock That's tough. I hate to leave off California Über Alles, Nazi Punks Fuck Off, Police Truck, Kill the Poor, and Pull My Strings, but...

  1. Holiday in Cambodia
  2. Too Drunk to Fuck
  3. Let's Lynch the Landlord

I also have a fondness for their perversion of Viva Las Vegas and, for some ridiculous reason, Rawhide (it's probably the guitar work).

The Whiskey a Go Go is a nightclub in West Hollywood, California, it has also been the home and launch pad for many punk bands. The club opened its doors on January 16, 1964

The picture was taken around 1980

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock Whenever someone mentions the Whiskey, I always think of "13 Stitches" by NOFX, a somewhat melancholy song about some of the bands Fat Mike saw there and violence in the punk scene.

And look at that, a full service gas station across the street. I don't think there were many of those left by 1980.

@caregivers

Anyone have experience with their person losing center of gravity/balance after time in bed or a recliner?
When we stand my mom up, she feels like she's falling forward, and as we try to keep her upright, she thinks we're pushing her face down. She's scared, it takes extreme effort by aide and trust by Mom to transfer.
She can stand and walk w/walker, is quite strong for 96, but recently lost what remained of vision. TIA!

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@dbaplanb @caregivers Is it possible that she is experiencing orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure when changing position that can cause dizziness)? If so, there are some medications that might help, such as fludrocortisone and midodrine. Lots of things can cause orthostatic hypotension, including Lewy body dementia. I mention this since you included a dementia hashtag.

4 proto-punk debut albums that had a significant influence on punk rock #knowyourroots

MC5 - Kick Out the Jams
The Stooges - The Stooges
New York Dolls - New York Dolls
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico

Any Fav for you?

#protopunk #punkrockhistory

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock The Velvet Underground put me to sleep, so no.

Of the songs on the four albums, I probably listen to "Personality Crisis" (NY Dolls) the most. But "Kick out the Jams" (MC5) and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (Stooges) are close. Overall, I'd probably go with MC5, but it's a really tough choice. All three were real trailblazers and very different from each other.

4 fantastic debut albums

Adolescents - Adolescents
D.O.A. - Something Better Change
7 Seconds - The Crew
Pennywise - Pennywise

Do you have a favorite?

I think The Crew by 7 Seconds is outstanding without falling behind the others

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock I'd also go with Pennywise. I have mixed feelings about the band, though. While I love a number of their songs, they lack the stylistic range of many of the other longer-lived bands (i.e., their songs kind of start to sound the same after a while).

Social Distortion - Mommy's Little Monster
X - Los Angeles
T.S.O.L - Dance With Me

Do you have a favorite from these awesome albums?

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock Horror punk does nothing for me, which narrows it down quite a bit.

I'd like to say Mommy's Little Monster because I really, really like Social D, but that would be biased by their later albums, which I like much better.

So it'd have to be Los Angeles. I wasn't sure what to make of the discordant harmonies when I first heard the album, but man, it grew on me.

Happy Birthday Raymond John Pepperell aka East Bay Ray, guitarist and founding member of the hardcore punk rock band Dead Kennedys, born on this day in 1958, Oakland, California

gryllus,
@gryllus@ecoevo.social avatar

@historyofpunkrock Two things defined the Dead Kennedys for me: Jello's vocals and lyrics, and Ray's guitar, particularly the surf elements. His guitar work, imo, is what really drives songs like "Holiday in Cambodia", "Too Drunk to Fuck", "Let's Lynch the Landlord", and a bunch of others.
