So what tag do we use for the Latin language?

I looked to see what hashtags @Minimus uses. There are some Latin hashtags, such as and . Otherwise it's mostly specific to the stories and characters, such as

question, , please:

Why can "flip" take a direct object, but "flop" cannot!

Why can't I flop him!!

headword,
@headword@lingo.lol avatar

@asl

Why, naturally, ‘flip’ is the transitive version of ‘flop’.

Much like ‘lay’ vs. ‘lie’ or ‘set’ vs. ‘sit’.

I'm so happy that we have managed to build such a friendly little community here.

Speaking of which: Our database is growing, so the server costs have been going up as well. So please consider, if you could spare some donations for the upkeep: https://ko-fi.com/lingolol

I am also considering setting up a merch shop. What sort of stuff would you hypothetically like to see in such a shop?

Make merch so you can make typefaces. Make typefaces so you can make merch. Seems to be a pattern over here for better or worse. Sending some ridiculous dice game instructions off to the printer before the font is even finished 😂✌️

@simplebits I, for one, would love to play a game of

I knew about the Ptolemaic d-20 with the Greek alphabet on it. I never thought of the fact that the basic Latin alphabet has 20 consonants and 6 vowels (including y), which fits nicely with dice shapes.

Were there ever any forensic linguists on the TV show CSI?

headword,
@headword@lingo.lol avatar

@grammargirl Found two tv-series with some forensic linguistics in them (via Reddit):

"Criminal Minds" (2005-2020) is a long-running TV show that I love. It's all about an FBI team using forensic linguistics, psychology, and behavioral analysis to solve some seriously twisted cases. Definitely worth a watch! If you're into true crime,

"Mindhunter" (2017-2019) on Netflix is fantastic. It's based on real events and takes a deep dive into the early days of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, with a focus on forensic linguistics and criminal psychology.

I just finished posting a bunch of new photos to Flickr, including stuff from a recent midwest USA roadtrip where I visited the Newberry Library, the Busy Beaver Button Museum, the Choo Choo diner (where food is delivered via model train), the town of Santa Claus in Indiana, and more.

There’s also plenty of the usual photos of lettering, storefronts, antiques, pizza, cars, etc.

TIL that the Swedish word for ‘arm chair’ is ‘fåtölj’. This is not transparent for Danish speakers, as we say ‘lænestol’ (‘leaning chair’). The Swedes borrowed the word from French ‘fauteuil’, who borrowed it from Frankish ‘*faldistōl’ (‘folding chair’).

@mapologies Not quite true for Danish. ‘Snegl’ is mostly used for snails (with a shell). The word for slug is ‘skovsnegl’ (‘forest’ + ‘snail’).

‘Skovsnegl’ is also slang for a thick moustache.

@medievodons and Art Historians, I need help with a word. Is there a specific term for "those little groups of three dots" one often sees in manuscript illumination? As example in Ott.lat.1562 f.1r. I feel like I've seen them so much they need a specific term, but I can't seem to recall one
