anyone have any good suggestions for lightweight local testing when implementing ActivityPub? would be nice to test signature verification and simulate various activities without spinning up a whole local Mastodon server or prematurely deploying my super alpha software

iamdavidobrien,
@iamdavidobrien@mastodon.social avatar

I think you and @Edent might have mutually beneficial conversation about that.

Researchers call for more studies to understand why they're linked.

I’m holding off making snap decisions until I learn more, but if this comes to fruition as reported, I may have to migrate blogging software and quite probably hosts for the first time in over two decades.

And as someone who values in situ comments on posts, and also doesn’t want to outsource that to a third party, I’ll face a bit of a challenge. https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/

Check out the latest ViewSpace slider interactive, a multi-wavelength view of the Supernova remnant Cassiopeia A.

I worked on the team that made this interactive and I was surprised by how well sliding between stops gives you a feeling for the structures within the remnant.

And while you are there, check out our huge library of other interactive sliders by clicking on "topics" on the left side of the page.

It's Saturday. It's been hissing it down outside all day. I've been inside writing VBA code to make a thing that'll make life easier for the @TetraLogical team and I've finally cracked it!

And yes, I did say VBA 😂

Coding like it's 1993! 🥳

It’s such a hot mess.

If you're remotely interested (as I am – also remotely invested, my daughter lives in Reykjavik) in events in Iceland, always go to RUV for news.

They're much less hysterical about things than the Guardian or the BBC.

Love these stained glass windows on one of David Barclay's 1900 townhouses in the Dowanhill area of Glasgow, especially the apparently smiling fish-like faces in the lower sections.

If you live in the U.S., you live in a shithole nation NO DIFFERENT from all the other shithole nations. STOP FOOLING YOURSELVES.

iamdavidobrien,
@iamdavidobrien@mastodon.social avatar

It is not true to say the US is no different. It differs in many ways.

For instance, your murder rate is off the scale. Gun crime statistics that are unimaginable in other developed nations.

Your healthcare is the least affordable and least effective. And your life expectancy is, uniquely, declining.

You are killing yourselves and blaming it on immigration.

@StillIRise1963

iamdavidobrien,
@iamdavidobrien@mastodon.social avatar

Sadly, that is not unique to the US.

Except perhaps in its brazenness.

@StillIRise1963

iamdavidobrien,
@iamdavidobrien@mastodon.social avatar

I do. And it is.

I simply mean that Great Britain was responsible for 150 years of that oppression.

And institutional racism is prevalent here in the UK too. Just not so overtly politically.

I understand that the US was founded on racism. But so too was the UK in a way that Britain before it was not.

I have no quarrel with you.

you ever think about just how much violence capitalism requires, as a system

iamdavidobrien,
@iamdavidobrien@mastodon.social avatar

I would argue that you not only "could argue", you "must state" that capitalism is absolutely predicated on –at least – the ready availability of violence.

History is abundantly clear on this. Capitalism is just gangs (corporations, states) with a few basic rules (hopelessly feeble laws).

This is why I just buy actual books. Paper. Ink.

The weight and heft of it. The smell. The cradling, and the page turning.

And it’s actually mine, not rented.

Oh, dear Goddess, just seen it.

You live in a young country; is history simply not taught in schools?

No mention of WWII? Nothing about fascism in the US in the 30s? The Holocaust? The 50m+ other people killed in that conflict?

I could go on about how your nation's wealth is built on plundering others' but, as a Scot, that would be hugely hypocritical.

A custom Date.timeAgo property (the inverse of the confusingly named timeIntervalSinceNow) is so useful — and so desperately needed in practice — that I forgot that I'd implemented it already, went to go write this extension, and happily found my previous work already done with exactly the same name.

It's like the programmer-feeling equivalent of taking out your winter coat for the first time this season and finding a $20 bill in the pocket from last year.

Safari Technology Preview 185 is here! With exciting news…

We’ve added a switch control to the web, with <input type="checkbox" switch>, so you don’t have to hack a checkbox with custom styling to make it look like a switch! By building on top of checkbox, it falls back nicely in browsers without support.

We’ve got support for align-content on block containers — which means you’ll be able to vertically center anything (or end align), not just Flexbox/Grid items!

https://webkit.org/blog/14885/release-notes-for-safari-technology-preview-185/

iamdavidobrien,
@iamdavidobrien@mastodon.social avatar

Um. No.

Just carry on with your checkboxes.

If switch is unsupported they’ll just be checkboxes.

You’ll get the same data back.

Nothing changes bar visual styling.

@mez @jensimmons

@iamdavidobrien@mastodon.social avatar
