remember when people cried about epic games dropping support for macos and linux with rocket league

i've been thinking about how very little i've heard when valve does the same

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

@Velveteen as much as i'm fine with the tradeoff (less restrictive DRM systems are "a compromise" and i'd much prefer a Steam to a SafeDisc), it is very weird how people criticised GfWL back in the late 00s for "requiring you to link an account for your disc games", something Valve got the ball rolling on in 2004

remember when everyone got mad at blizzard for "taking away overwatch 1 you can't play it anymore, your overwatch 1 discs are useless"

Hi, if you use Discord and feel bad about it for some reason, don’t. Don’t let the people on here try and convince you that matrix is secretly very easy to use and better and all it needs is adoption and just host this and etc. Same with any chat app or service or whatever. Discord is popular because it is a well made, usable service. People on here play the Privacy Game and switch browsers/search engines performatively. Switching which Product you use will have next to zero implications in your daily life, just use the one that is least annoying. Most “privacy” companies are just grifting (eg DDG funding right wing media, Kagi using AI, Brave doing crypto and AI, Mozilla doing AI, Proton baselessly shitting on other services in press releases, various companies doing VPNs, Element providing services to Police, Arc doing AI, I could go on forever…)

I’m not saying to go “doomer” and just use Chrome and Google, but people need to acknowledge that these services you use exist within capitalism, and evaluate whether they really Care about your privacy, or the Monthly Active Users metric. Don’t be shocked when your Private Service gets sold to a not-so-private company. You are being marketed to.

@j0 i dont know why people treat Mozilla differently than Google when it comes to being an evil profit-oriented company. they deliberately make it vague where the non-profit foundation ends and the for-profit corporation begins

and importantly: they both make good web browsers/engines that everyone has valid reasons to use and not-use. it doesn't matter which corporation you want's services shoving down your throat

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

@tfunken @j0 it is not a "cooperation" it is an out-and-out registered Corporation. their "income source to survive" is Google, and most of it just goes to the CEO anyway after they got rid of a lot of developers a few years back, and some more just a few months ago

We need more people with bad internet. Im talking bird shit on the satellite dish type networking. We dialing in on a chewed up phone line. Call it espionage the way im dropping these packets. Baud rate tied to my hearts BPM. Im starting a small business on McDonalds Free Wi-Fi. I dont send JSON, I give my buddy Jason a call and he gets it where its going. Im moving different. Lag so bad the opps think Im teleporting. My downloads arrive on a UPS delivery schedule. Got a router running off three triple-A batteries. We rigged up wifi with walkie talkies.

Opps tried sending me a DDoS. Jokes on them, I never had service to begin with. I blink packets into the heavens like sending SOS morse codes. My computers plugged into the dirt below me. We transmit packets over tin can and string. Tried dialling into the ISP they put me on hold

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

Im holdin out on 1G. Im reaching my phone out the window to catch a gust of signal. Internet so slow all my pictures look like the Super Nintendo. All my packets got no time to live. Games give me wins for disconnecting out of pity. Ping times in the hours and I still got no pong

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

Cooked up a full three-course meal while waitin on a Wikipedia page. We dialed in for 56k of jack shit. My modem lights blink an S.O.S. signal. My cable box acting like its got no cable. You want the wifi password? Its "Slow as shit". Im the world record holder for the Chrome dinosaur game. Hes like a brother to me. This shit aint loadin for me LAN.

you can not build a new Visual Studio 2022 project without an internet connection, because it tries "restoring nuget packages" even on an empty project. actually lmfao

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

if anyone replies to this with "hur dur microsoft bad" i dont want to hear it, i want to hear "developers should be forced to have a shitty inconsistent internet connection"

DRM is so cool as a technology i just hate the fact that its DRM and its designed to screw people over

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

reversing DRM systems is always like "wtf that's a really neat way to resolve the issue and also fuck you for doing that"

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

@Gargron will there be at least discussions on improving the moderation capabilities in Mastodon so server admins (both victims and passer-bys) can more easily manage these attacks?
