@Cmastication dang, those AI sure are smart. 🤣

Regardless of RAG, Knowledge Graphs and Vector Search, the mathematics of LLM trained GPT tends towards errors.

Yes, experienced folk such as yourself can make valid use of them; many others cannot. The toll of human curation of the training sets, and the environmental costs may not be worth it. Unless, maybe, we get to the next steps of local, private, secure generative agents, and as on in causal models.

Countries Fail to Agree on Treaty to Prepare the World for the Next Pandemic

Negotiators plan to ask for more time. Among the sticking points are equitable access to vaccines and financing to set up surveillance systems.

And hour and ten minutes later...

The house showing was at 11:30, so we took Hammy out at 11:20. We checked our Ring cam. Nobody showed up... until noon. Sigh. So more Hammy walking, for another half hour. We live in a hilly nieghorhood, so ... well... We're beat.

Heard a few nice things about the back/front yards and neighborhood on the Ring, but that's it. 🤞🏼

I haven’t encountered a single vegetable-centered dish at any of the Thai, Japanese, Malaysian restaurants I’ve visited in LA. It is possible to eat differently from the rest of the world (re a conversation a few days ago about always having to order veggies)

(To be clear, I agree everyone should eat veggies if they want! But also that, there are many cuisines which simply aren’t vegetable-centered)

(I had a very large raw papaya salad, lots of fiber but also enough chilli to kill a bear)

jadp,
@jadp@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte add Philippines to that list. Amazingly, my spouse, @czds was raised vegetarian there. Kare-kare without meat, with bago’ong made with fermented tofu, black beans, and savories rather than fried shrimp. We added lobster and oyster mushroom to her mother’s recipe to get a bit of shrimp flavor. Ordering mixed vegetables in a Filipino restaurant invariably means asking that they hold the ground pork, and patis (fish sauce) is a standard in many dishes.

Web designer: Check our the new website!

me: I did, but on my iPad I can't flip through these pictures in the middle. If I move left or right they don't move at all.

wd: Oh we used the latest in parallax scrolling with ScrollMagic. If you keep scrolling down the pictures will flip to the right.

me: So I scroll down to flip right?

wd: <smiles and nods>

me: I understand how the boomers got that way. I'm going to need you to get off my lawn now please.

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

jadp,
@jadp@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina I’m disappointed that none have said — completely reverse your thinking from programming in any other language

jadp,
@jadp@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina yes and no, it is a programming language primarily for statistics and manipulation of data stored as data frames, and version of the older, proprietary language S, and written in C, FORTRAN and R

An hour or so to go before we can go home after our open house, but so far today was a bust, per our Ring camera. Hardly anyone showed. The market has been flat. 😢

Cmastication, to random

It feels like the endless debate about “are LLMs thinking” largely misses the point. A better question is “are LLMs useful?” And if they are, we should understand their strengths and weaknesses at different tasks.

Endless pontificating on the meaning of “intelligence” is fun though. I suggest pairing it with a good bourbon. But once you sober up, go build useful things with useful tools.

@jadp@mastodon.social avatar

@Cmastication yes, and “useful” needs to consider costs, both in terms of finances and in terms of environmental and human impact. SLMs especially when coupled with RAG, knowledge graphs and even DAG/causal inference seem just as useful at less cost @brook

Update on house hunting trip for those who are asking:

We’ll be in BC tomorrow btw.

Turns out the photos of the house were misrepresenting that it had a garage. The doors were there, but behind them were 2 rooms where the garage was. The agent put out a note to all agents, but we didn’t find out til we were in Oregon.

The listing agent got a ton of complaints.

Sons/agent saw that the house had other flaws, so our hunt continues.

This is all for the best. 🇨🇦
