I can't remember the last time they let me stay asleep for a minute. Literally. I measure my sleep in seconds now.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@Uair @actuallyautistic Who's they?

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@Uair @actuallyautistic First, I'm so terribly sorry it's been so rough for you. dear god.... I am so sorry.

Although I'm happy to listen, no, I don't want any more state secrets. I make a better straightforward protester without them. And besides, I hear it's easier to say,, "I don't know," when you really don't.

I hope you can find a moment or two of peace here & there, and see it when they do come. Hugs.

Yes, if you work for the government, other government employees are "we," whether you want to call it that or not. Theoretically, in a democracy, that "we" applies to all citizens.

This account of a teenager & his family is heartbreaking 💔.

Families raising kids who have violent meltdowns struggle to find support. Kids like this are acutely vulnerable to the influence of anyone who is kind to them & any group in which they find acceptance. For those of us who experience meltdowns, learning to understand & manage our overwhelm & the eruptions it leads to is a lifelong journey. For most of us it’s full of failure & shame. Where & how can we find acceptance & love? How can we learn to be gentle with ourselves?

I think many folk, especially those of us who grew up undiagnosed & unsupported then raised similarly undx, distressed, overwhelmed & volatile autistic kids while unable to find help, would shudder with recognition at elements of this tragic story.

My heart goes out to this family ❤️‍🩹 @actuallyautistic

@moz @26pglt @actuallyautistic To be fully transparent, my pool of spouse options was tiny, there wasn't any physical abuse, and I've pegged a couple cultural and gender-related factors that can't be denied.

That said, yes, that aspect of our lives triggered the bulk of my maternal defense mechanisms. I know I could have been a better mom if I'd been diagnosed and been able to manage spoons being backed up by medical pros.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@moz @26pglt @actuallyautistic yeah, I'm in the years-long process of trying to get my mom to have her cognitive decline monitored, happens to pretty much everyone, but she won't even make a phone call. it's that same "nothing wrong with me, and I'm insulted you might suggest it" vibe. IMO it's just arrogant (and exactly what needs to be treated) if you think you can outsmart cognitive assessments. It's like she doesn't want her car to be seen at the mechanic's, even for good maintenance.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@moz @26pglt @actuallyautistic I am so very, very lucky to have such a wonderful GP. She'll back me and give me a referral to a different provider for any reason. I was mis-billed by one, and she just aid, "Try these people." I'm also in a city where there are enough providers to hop around to.

They're not all bad. And if you find good ones and go there, the one square of "free market" that works for consumers should theoretically kick in.

So sorry it's been so rough.

You're missing the point.

Please find a way to hang out with some disabled people. I'm sure a few will be able to understand and be excited you invited them along.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@Radical_EgoCom @RustyBertrand the rhetorical and philosophical point that there is a gray zone, one that allows for excuses, but also for forgiveness. This is the liminal space disabled people live in.

What we need to inspect is what each of us holds as forgivable, who falls in line with it, who doesn't and why. Specifically we need to look at when we ourselves fall into it.

The stark, simple abstraction leaves out a morally/philosophically critical population.

You can pick the sadist nazi narcissist who promises to put millions in camps, seeks SCOTUS approval to assassinate rivals and murder anyone he wants when he’s told you he has a VENDETTA, or you can pick the other guy who does some tangibly good things, even if there are other things we’d like to not happen or change, and doesn’t THREATEN OUR VERY LIVES.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 I've long argued the the Democratic party is centrist, and the Republican is hard right, even the "moderates." There is no hard left party, in large part because where the center goes, so goes the nation. And we are a right-leaning nation.

As far as Palestine goes, just imagine if it were Jared Kuschner instead of Anthony Blinken. Imagine if Ukraine had already lost. Imagine the Saudi oil we'd be burning though. Imagine how Trump would be handing this.

Get.an.imagination.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@amerika @StillIRise1963 The left is a mess, frankly. It's all over the place depending on who you talk to. The lack of organization and organizing principles on the left is arguably why the US is a right-leaning nation.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@amerika @StillIRise1963 The left disorganized because it doesn't have church to go to every week.
It's disorganized because it's multilingual and culturally inclusive.
It's disorganized because it's fighting for the rights of those who have mental illnesses and communication difficulties.
it's disorganized because by definition it lacks the resources (money) the establishment has.
Disorganization isn't a bad thing. It just is. We need to see it in and outside ourselves. We have work to do.

Meta lost $3.85 billion on the metaverse in the first quarter of 2024 alone. You know, that thing we all laughed about a couple years ago and next to no one actually uses.

It’s burned $45 billion on the metaverse since the end of 2020.

janisf,

@Strandjunker That sounds lovely, but that's not how it works. The system is deliberately devised to support a continuous 2-sided argument. Without two sides, the party that is hellbent on profit and guns wins.

Are there places in the Fediverse where folks who are longtime disabled (i.e. having done some of the work of dismantling their internalized ableism) who are into pan-disability activism are hanging out exchanging ideas and tactics?

Most of what I see is discussion within silos of one's own disability group (ME, blindness, autism, etc.) and or COVID discussion [all of which is great, but I'm looking for more pan-disability stuff to supplement]

@x00001 You have to wonder why someone felt the need to coin the phrase (no pun intended).

I'm at a loss. My 64-year-old ND brother isn't math capable, and spends all his money on various tool/toys that are crowding him out of his living space. For example, he now owns four leaf blowers. He still let's my 90-year-old mother buy his food and cook for him, pay his utilities, etc. She owns the house they live in.

He is addicted to shopping, and there's no stopping him. Ideas?

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@BernieDoesIt @x00001 That's why I'm here. We have tried everything to convince him. We've been at it 50 years. He won't budge. I'm out of ideas about how to connect with a brain that can't multiply by 12 at all, but launches into a self-protective, really quite articulate trade about how no one can be trusted, and the world is trying to control him. There's no real paranoia, which would give us a lever to nudge him into therapy in more lucid moments. He simply doesn't shift.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@cy Although there is definitive mapping of the extreme drop in crime in the 80's and 90's directly to Roe. there really isn't a better predictor for criminality that not being wanted by your mother.\

That wasn't my brother, though, which is why mu mom is 90 and still cooking for him.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@cy :) I do appreciate the sentiment. He's pre-Roe, and my mom is Baptist. And he was a wanted baby.

Thing is, especially these days, people will scrape the world for off-handed phrases they can turn into sermon fodder. More than that, though, there is probably an tender-hearted ND who's mom spouted something similar to them, about them. It's one thing to walk through the world crushed. It's another to reckon with a crushing world.

Words speak care, and they speak the opposite, too. ☮️
