There were a whole lot of things I was supposed to do today with both farm things and space junk things. But instead, we got a new livestock guardian puppy.

She's already getting along really well with our other LGD, though all the goat mamas seem pretty convinced she is a small bear and will need some time to come to trust her...

Second visit to the vet, this time our PCP. (PCV?) Treatment is more aggressive, but he gives a good prognosis. Hydration, B12, appetite stimulants.

The Mrs says she fought the feeding this afternoon, which is good.

Found a harness and took one of the indoor cats out for his first “walk”. Mostly he just wanted to eat grass and check out the bird feeder up close.

I think the LED connector is just a SIM card slot? More solid than most connections for light strips.

Review:

Battery powered vs. alway plugged in:
For our kitchen it adds an extra hassle of suddenly not working and needing to be charged. For somewhere without any power options that you don't use frequently it would be a nice option.

Motion vs. on/off switch:
This is something that sounds ideal, but is fussy and erratic in practice. It may or may not turn on, and when it does turn on there’s only 3 options for how long it stays on (15, 60, 120 seconds), none of which typically match what you want. Part of this is to conserve battery, but also how would you signal turning it off? Using motion to turn off would mean false triggers and more frustration.

That being said it’s easy to remove battery and run off USB power, could also wire a remote on/off switch. That or jettison the whole board (use for somewhere that makes more sense) and wire the lights up like the other string with simple usb power and switch.

Troubleshooting battery powered LED lights that quit working after a few weeks. No charge LED and measuring where the USB’s 5vdc is being lost I realize there isn't any at all, even at the jack. Remembering some of the usb-c spec, I try an A to C cable with old USB A power cube and the device starts charging. The C to C cable which charges an iPad doesn't do a thing.

After a little searching:
TL;DR: USB-A charging ports by default provide 5V to whatever is plugged in. USB-C charging ports don't.

https://www.reddit.com/r/UsbCHardware/comments/c3q4s6/why_do_some_usbc_devices_not_charge_with_a_usbc/

My guess is this cheap circuit board doesn’t have the CC resistors to signal the system that it wants 5v (it shipped with an A to C cable).

Saw these bright orange weird things on an old birch. When I examined closer I saw tiny chambers, their openings no larger than a toothpick point.

Super tiny flying stingy things?!

No.

Ok, have to be galls. When all else fails, go with galls.

Nope.

Two days later I smartened up. What’s even more weird and freaky than galls?

Slime Molds! This is the most bizarro slime mold I’ve ever found.

This Spring has been a bit confusing on the poison plant front. Someone on strava posted photo that my phone said was wild sarsaparilla and he swore was poison ivy. They say the sarsaparilla is commonly mistaken for ivy in the Spring. I've never been that good at ID’ing poison ivy.
Monday's trail run through the woods was punctuated by me leaping over/around clumps of the stuff, whatever it was I didn't want to take a chance.
Along the rail trail today we found lots of poison ivy and when compared to the sarsaparilla it’s obviously different and distinct.

phone says poison oak or ivy (Toxicodendron) which is member of sumac family

Apropos of nothing (I hope), Shawn Mullin's Beautiful Wreck has been swirling around my brain the last 24 hours. Making dinner last night, “such a beautiful wreck". 2am wandering to the bathroom, “what a beautiful wreck you are”. Walk the dog this morning, “but you make such a beautiful wreck”.

The other day, shortly after my wife told me about an appt she'd set up in September I said, “great, now that's stuck in my head.”
“What?”
“The song”
[blink, blink]
“September? Earth Wind and Fire??”
"uh, maybe? not sure”
[I pull up the song sure she'd instantly recognize, she doesn’t]
"Not sure I listened to lyrics back then.”
Meanwhile I see a sign that says “turn around” and end up with Bonnie Tyler stuck in my head for days.
