UQ's Camp Solidarity still going strong. The pro-genociders seem to have given up though. @brisbane

the team behind Critical Role just launched its own subscription membership service called "Beacon"

pretty cool to see a creative team trying out a new model to give them so much control over their own content/platform

jimcullen,

@molly0xfff do we know how Beacon works under the hood? I've seen other independent creators do a similar thing using a Patreon white-label service called Memberful. Ad-free versions of their shows, access to their private Discord server, etc. And to the customer it looks like you've signed up for their service, as opposed to being a patron on Patreon.

The longest-running scientific experiment, the Pitch Drop at the University of Queensland, Brisbane @brisbane

jimcullen,

@brisbane watch the live stream at http://thetenthwatch.com/

jimcullen,

@Spitzspot yeah I dunno why exactly the Pitch Drop experiment gets the label "longest continually-running experiment". Probably some kind of technicality about what exactly counts as "experiment" and "continually-running". There are some even older than Beal's listed on Wikipedia, depending on how you define it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-term_experiment

UQ students standing in solidarity with Palestine

UQ has a very strong relationship with US weapons manufacturer Boeing. Students are protesting this relationship, as well as showing general support for Palestinians, by staging a camp-in on campus.

Some photos I took of the camp as I walked past them this morning.

I put my thoughts on the skeet place and I want to highlight this reply I got.

I think a large number of people who are active here specifically need to hear this perspective.

jimcullen,

@TechConnectify @VATVSLPR @vl_tone @teotwaki I don't use the site and have never really looked into the technicals, but from what I've heard BlueSky is designed so every component is like a separate module, so people can plug in different moderation tools, different sorting algorithms, etc. that fit their liking. Sounds like a pretty neat idea to me.

This is also a big reason I used to be a big fan of Reddit, and still really like Lemmy. The "time + community support" sorting algo works great.

A creator you support posts a new video but it won't be available until a specific time tomorrow. I don't get this, it seems like hype for an event wastes the attention and engagement of people who could just be watching your video, but mostly won't.

jimcullen,

@enobacon not really sure what you mean. Is it a post saying "new video up now on Patreon/Nebula, will be on YT tomorrow"? A Premier on YouTube which shows up early in your Subscriptions tab? A post just saying "hey, gonna have a new vid tomorrow"? Something else? I think these are all distinct scenarios that should be thought of in different ways wrt their pros & cons.

I've been rewatching some of my old videos for something I'm working on and wow ... they are boring as hell. I can't believe that my channel ever took off with these early snoozefest videos.

Even I need to watch them at 2x speed, and I made them!!

This one in particular, I remember being "emotional" and "edgy". Uh ... no. It's slow and monotone.

They're all like this. In fact, this one is better than most.

A clever solution to BCC's cowardice

BCC has been repeatedly removing ghost bikes from a site on Nudgee Rd after a cyclist died at the location last year, despite years of warning from cycling advocates that improved infrastructure was needed in the area. To stop them from removing the ghost bikes, highlighting the blood on BCC's hands, and highlighting the absurdity of how storing private property on public land is completely ok if it's a car, someone installed this ghost trailer.
@brisbane

jimcullen, (edited )

Additional image.

I had heard about the ghost bikes being repeatedly removed, but I rarely travel Nudgee Rd myself. Happened to drive down it last night and spotted this ingenuous solution to the problem. Had to stop and capture it.

edit: hmm, looks like Lemmy can't show images attached to replies. Shouldn't be too much of a surprise I guess. See it in reply.

Brisbane planning laws keeping poor out of city’s most desirable suburbs, research suggests | Housing | The Guardian

City’s character-zoning laws preserve prewar homes but prevent higher-density housing being built in areas with established infrastructure

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/oct/22/brisbane-planning-laws-keeping-poor-out-of-citys-most-desirable-suburbs-research-suggests

jimcullen,

@anathema_device I have been saying for some time now that BCC should eliminate CR1 (character residential) and LDR (low-density residential) zoning entirely. Replace them with CR2 (character residential infill) and LMR2 (low-medium density 2-3 storey) at the bare minimum.

After my last 2 videos, I've seen an increase in comments (especially on reddit 🙄) that my "tone" is driving people away, and that I'd be much more successful if I was nicer.

Coincidentally, I've also seen a huge bump in Patreon supporters this month.

I've had an increase in the absolute number of Patreon supporters, but I've also had many people increase their contribution amount, even though I provide no benefits to anyone who does that. 🤔

jimcullen,

@notjustbikes "your tone is putting people off" has the same vibes as "I was in favour of action against climate change until the protesters disrupted my commute, now I support fossil fuels" 🤦‍♂️

LMK when you're all ready for ideas on how to reduce vote splitting

https://bird.makeup/users/nomorefreeways/statuses/1675974947490127872

jimcullen,

@enobacon the link's broken, but the answer to reducing vote splitting is really very simple. Use an actual democratic system. FPTP is not democracy, it's a farce.

I have serious issues with YouTube comments: they are used to spread so much misinformation and lies.

For example, for my latest video, many people have said that I am lying about emergency vehicles being able to go through the knip. Even though I literally SHOW FOOTAGE of emergency vehicles going through the knip.

This is a common lie being told about the project online.

But here's the problem ... 🧵

jimcullen,

@notjustbikes incidentally this is also why I wish Nebula had comments. I get the impression Dave Wiskus thinks they'd be like YouTube comments, but when people have to pay to be there I think they'd be far far more reasonable, and a better place for both the creators and the good-faith commenters to discuss the video.

It's interesting reading comments of the Hyundai brake light issue.

A lot of people seem to think "this isn't a big deal" but, once again, their reason is that "you should just be paying attention"

Why is it so damn hard to get people to realize that OTHER DRIVERS ARE NOT YOU and that YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW WELL THEY MIGHT BE PAYING ATTENTION?

jimcullen,

@TechConnectify it's the typical neoliberal/conservative way of looking at the world. Everything is down to individual decisions. Nothing is about the systems and how they help to reinforce problems, or how they could reinforce solutions.
