Google to pay $8M settlement for “lying to Texans,” state AG says

"If Google is going to advertise in Texas, their statements better be true."

The big question: Will continue returning a poop emoji to media emails under Yaccarino?

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@lauren that might actually be a good indicator of who is actually in charge. If it's Yaccarino, I imagine she'd at least pretend to do PR. If it's still Musk, we'll continue to see the poop.

Musk appoints ad exec Yaccarino as new Twitter CEO. // Since Musk will still head everything related to product per se, this is clearly a desperate attempt to win back advertisers to his continuing hellscape. - https://www.gearrice.com/update/elon-musk-is-going-to-make-this-woman-twitter-ceo-know-4-facts-about-linda-yaccarino/

@ike @lauren right wing nutjobs on Twitter are already losing their minds over Yaccarino. It will be immensely difficult for Musk to simultaneously woo advertisers and keep his base appeased.

Okay folks: this morning we're launching something we think is pretty useful. Lots of people have strong opinions on how content moderation should work, but they've never done it. So we built a content moderation mobile game (browser-based): https://moderatormayhem.engine.is/

Details about it are here: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/05/11/moderator-mayhem-a-mobile-game-to-see-how-well-you-can-handle-content-moderation/

Twitter starts purging inactive accounts after quiet policy change

"We cannot release inactive usernames at this time," Twitter's policy still says.

@jfmezei Musk doesn't care about any of the issues you cited. This is why people need to stop relying on Twitter for anything important; he could do anything to anyone's account at any time with no warning.

(If I had to guess, I suspect Musk's Twitter would effectively delete the old account and its contents, then allow someone to claim the username. But that's just a wild guess, because as I said, he could decide anything.)

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@jfmezei yes, he could do literally anything. I wonder if it's in NPR's best interest to delete their history now, before they lose access completely and lose control over their history. (Of course Musk could just restore that content from backups if he wanted! Assuming they still have backups, which isn't a given.)

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@jfmezei given how Musk has acted against accounts who talk about Mastodon in the past, that may not be a safe option either! It's certainly worth a shot, but NPR may still want to act to reduce the chances that their past history falls into someone else's hands.

I have to admit that "Starman" (1984), is a wonderfully sweet little film about a benevolent alien who comes to Earth, takes human form, and is hunted by authorities. I have a soft spot for the film, even though the reality is that any aliens that are actually out there (if any) are far more likely to exterminate us, enslave us, or (at best) treat us as pets if they ever show up here.

Thought for the Day: When someone just doesn't get the point about continuing a thread that has reached the end of its usefulness, but the annoyance doesn't rise to the level of actual blocking, a so-called "soft block" may be appropriate if they currently follow you. Simply Mastodon block them, and then immediately unblock them. This drops their follow of you so that they won't be bothered with your posts going forward, but does not actually leave them blocked per se.

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@lauren can you mute them for a period of time? Tusky supports that, I am guessing the web client does too.

When you write hashtags that contain multiple words, make the first letter of each word a capital letter, for example . This will make the tag readable to blind people.

Blind people use the internet through screen reader apps, which read text out aloud. By putting a capital at the start of each word in a hashtag, you are telling the screen reader how to say the tag correctly.

In the non-techy world this is generally known as "CamelCase".

(Techy people may call it PascalCase)

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@feditips maybe we should just turn every post into a thread about 1990s programming language conventions!
