As you see: it was quite wintery up there, with snow and wind, and a little bit of sun ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Check all the open data from this and all our stations here: https://browser-stage.lter.eurac.edu/

Climate Change on Mountains
Reviving Humboldtโ€™s Approach to Science

This book presents concepts, methodologies and major achievements of recent research in climate change ecology in mountains by placing this research in a historical perspective, that of travelers and naturalists of the Romantic era, and first of all Alexander von Humboldt.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to see them properly in the future and not from across a street with the cops lmao.

In the first shot, Sepultura plays in the background, from beyond a giant wall. The shot starts with a view of a paper cup of coffee, before we pan to the right and show the wall. In the second shot, a faraway stage is viewable from beyond a gate. In both shots, traffic passes by consistently.

I've yet to understand how charging an entry fee of โ‚ฌ5 would deter anyone, after they've paid thousands just to get there. Maybe โ‚ฌ50 would do it, though if I was designing a system to reduce visitor numbers I'd go for a free lottery.

Venice is planning to charge tourists $8 a day to visit. Here's why https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-13/venice-is-planning-to-charge-tourists-8-dollar-a-day-to-visit/102844986

m_steinwandter,

@timrichards
You have to see that many come to Venice (and Europe) in a kinda "Europe-in-10-days" tour, leaving a lot of money to the travel agencies, but not necessarily to the city.
But a lot of trash and leftovers remain there, often only to get that one photo (that everyone has...).
I hope the money will help to keep the city clean from trash, anf if this is too much for someone, then they should not come ๐Ÿ˜‰
Steange, but people often respect thing more if it is not for free!

m_steinwandter,
@m_steinwandter@fediscience.org avatar

@timrichards
More money in the administration could result in more resources for doing other things. We will see :)
It is a test, postponed now for long...
We have a similar system for the where you have now to register to be allowed to enter the touristic area. It was too crowded, and a lot of people mean also a lot of ๐Ÿšฎ and ๐Ÿšป...
And what I've often experienced: a lack of respect (see current example from Florence where tourist climbed statues and broke them...)

Spectacular red furry velvet ant, Dasymutilla sp.โ€”a wasp whose female, as shown here, is wingless. Spotted on a sandy trail in Los Padres National Forest, behind Santa Barbara, http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/175677123

Velvet ants are solitary wasps with hardened exoskeletons and often very powerful and painful venom; they hunt viciously, accumulating paralised prey in burrows where they lay their eggs. The hatching larvae will eat the prey alive.

This one showed herself a great digger. Dug multiple times, a few seconds at a time, as if looking for something. How bees and wasps manage to dig so effectively never ceases to amuse me.
