Since 1969, the Kinetic Sculpture Race has been a Humboldt tradition. This year's event is this weekend. Most likely, we will find a spot somewhere on the 40-mile course to see what people are driving and floating in 2024.
The event was founded in Ferndale, CA, by a master of metal fabrication and imagination, Hobart Brown. I believe Ferndale was more relaxed and free wheeling in those days. I remember touring his workshop when I was about 12. Even then, I recognized his talent was wow.
The race is great fun with nonsense and revelry built into the rules. All entries are people powered only. They even crown a Rutabega Queen.
The race is hysterically funny, exhausting, and is a never to be forgotten event that was an integral part of the Humboldt of my youth. I took these photos at the 2011 race starting line watching with the grandkids.

October 28th, 2019 - Highway 36, Humboldt, California.
With the season coming to a close, them trimmigrants can't be choosey about where they're gonna hibernate for the winter ❄️
Seen along the way to the #Mad_River Bar - a town, if you will, with 3 buildings in it; a bar, a post office the size of a closet, and a butcher shop. There's also the "Mad River Burger Bar", a locally famous trailer on jack stands that sells takeout burgers 🍔 & fries 🍟
I stopped to get a quick shot of Humboldt Bay from the top of Table Bluff on the drive home. It is beautiful today if you have shelter from the wind. #Humboldt
I am supposed to get in thirty minutes of heart-pounding exercise three days a week. I still needed one more day, so I ran down to the wildlife refuge, and since the trail was flat, I walked as fast as I could in the loose gravel. Maybe it wasn't quite heart-pounding, but it was a couple of miles.
We will call it good enough.
I left Summer in charge of things at home.
A few photos from my walk. #Marsh#WildlifeRefuge#Humboldt
Found out that the reason the anti-genocide protestors at Cal Poly #Humboldt built barricades is because the first night the cops drove a truck into the crowd of students, apparently trying to run them down.

I had the opportunity to get out for a hike with our oldest grandson today. A change of scenery was nice. We checked out a redwood forest that had been logged on and off since the 1800s. The trees that are remaining are now part of a community forest. It was pretty much just us on the trail on this cold gray day.
We had fun trying to spot the white trillium blossoms that appear near redwoods in the spring.
The trails were not very finished and pretty muddy, but we hiked at least three miles. Our favorite feature of the trail was redwood trees growing in a circle around the old growth stumps.
I needed that. #Redwoods#Humboldt
