@darthmoomin @Spiritech @emarktaylor @baseball @baseball as a Giants fan it's been extremely painful to watch the team from across the Bay get used up for spare parts the way the Athletics have. Nothing short of shameful.

The Podcast Index thing on Mastodon looks really cool! I just followed the Grammar Girl podcast to see what happens, but supposedly, I'll now see a post here whenever I release a new episode and it will have audio.

I really wish module devs would make up their minds about how to pass stuff to it. So like the packages module? Pass it a list of packages, super easy
ansible.builtin.packages:

  • foo
  • bar
  • baz
    state: present

But say you want to create a bunch of directories? Well, sucks for you - the file module doesn't work that way:
ansible.builtin.file:
path: "{{item}}"
owner: larted
group: luser
mode: "0755"
state: directory
with_items:

  • "/haha"
  • "/fuck"
  • "/consistency"

And these are both BUILTIN modules. Seriously folks, make up your fucking minds. Shit like this makes being a pointlessly difficult.

For folks intending to purity-test their this election cycle, all I can say is I hope you really want to live with the possibility of this country being run by fascist idiots driving pickup trucks festooned with Moron Labia and No Step on Derpy Snek bumper stickers. And once in power, they won't give it up no matter how anybody votes in the future.
The infinitely frustrating reality is that we're stuck with some moderate asshat being the best option until the actuarial tables finally catch up to the generation currently clutching the handles of power like it's the steering wheel they peer over when they drive. Future generations show vastly more promise, but only if we don't vote ourselves into a dictatorship first.

@etherdiver as a fellow Californian, that works great, until it doesn't. Also the nuance surrounding the conversation of "only if you live in the following states" is far too easily lost, leading to another Florida in 2000 situation.

Dear
Our household waste pickup day is: Thursday.
In order to further optimize the operational efficiency of this household we request that all bulk and standard rate items be delivered only on Wednesday. This will enable the items to be placed directly in the recycle bin once it has been brought to the curb, preventing any need to carry it from the mailbox.
Thank you for helping us help you properly and efficiently dispose of your unwanted standard and bulk rate items.
Regards,
The Eyrie

Another?! United is really having the worst week. Let's see, stuck rudder in a 737, wheel fell off a 777, hydro failure of an A320, taxiway excursion of another 737... am I missing anything?

Three of those failures are arguably maintenance issues, especially the wheel coming off.

"Experimental" is one way to say it. "Took way too much acid in the sixties and never came down" would be another.

@RickiTarr hah! My dad had one of those chairs. It was surprisingly comfortable for about an hour, then the knees started complaining.

Some people really shouldn't be allowed under the hood of a car. Or the bonnet if that's what you want to call it, either way the latch to access the engine needs to have a shock collar fitting for anyone who'd do a thing like this:

me,
@me@social.taupehat.com avatar

What made this extra special and extra infuriating is that this car requires a thin-walled 12-point spark plug socket. Installing the spark plug with a regular 6-point socket means the person who did it either had to grease or grind down the socket to install the wrong plug, so guess what I had to do?

ai6yr, (edited ) to Dogs

Hmm, a very large dog just came up to the window (outside) here where I am working--about 5 feet way from me--and starting a loud howling for a few minutes, and left. (not my dog). Last night there was a raccoon there all night, and a coyote wandering around. Now I am wondering what is so interesting right here outside.

(I think it was a dog, because it was wearing a reflective collar... but now, I am not so sure).

(For the record, the dog here inside was very confused--but not alarmed--about why a strange dog was howling at the window)

me,
@me@social.taupehat.com avatar

@ai6yr man, I will trade you any number of coyotes for the damn foxes behind my house. Have you heard the sounds those things make? From the Great Below, I tell you.

Plus they troll our dog mercilessly. If he ever gets one I won't even be mad. They sneak into our yard and leave droppings in his bathroom spot, drives him nuts.

@me@social.taupehat.com avatar

@dcreemer @ai6yr like at what point is it enough to say the 737 MAX series is inherently defective and should be scrapped? Their original sin was trying to preserve the 737 type rating on what was essentially a completely different aircraft, and it hasn't worked. Instead, it's killed people and it was just incredible luck that nobody died in this incident.

me,
@me@social.taupehat.com avatar

@ai6yr @dcreemer apparently this was a plug where an optional emergency exit would have been. Popped at 16,000 feet.
