@ai6yr from the standpoint of the dog, it was a new squeaky toy.

The same company that got a lot of companies pwned when they left gaping holes in their MOVEit software is back at it, this time with a completely exploitable ftp server.

The only solution here is for this company's customers to sue it out of existence. They clearly don't know what they're doing.

This 'users are idiots, and are confused by functionality' mentality of [Ubuntu] is a disease. If you think your users are idiots, only idiots will use it. I don't use [Ubuntu], because in striving to be simple, it has long since reached the point where it simply doesn't do what I need it to do.

So let's see here... the man whose potentially business empire-ending is before a judge asking (looks at notes) his attorney forgot to check the box on the response form labeled "jury trial demanded" has been keeping busy by publicly and angrily criticizing the judge who will soon determine his financial fate.

To me, this seems strikingly inadvisable. To his followers/cult members, it's 4-D chess.

I do not think his followers are right on this one...

me,
@me@social.taupehat.com avatar

@ai6yr absolutely. It also betrays a lack of understanding of his current situation. He might be able to bully his way through a lot of other situations but he's being met with a brick wall now. Long overdue.

Today at work we received an email directing us to complete mandatory annual anti-phishing training. As I pointed out to the director of IT, the email:

  • Was unsolicited and unannounced
  • Contained an immediate and mandatory call to action
  • That link is external to the org and requests auth
  • The email was sent from outside the company using a forged "From" header to make it appear that it came from within

In other words, it was literally the exact thing people should be looking out for when dealing with phish attacks. This third-party company running the training is faking it, not making it.

New "climate vulnerability index" tool. (Update: spot check and I believe this tool is so flawed as to be unusable) https://climatevulnerabilityindex.org/

The level of enshittification of the Internet from LLMs is truly spectacular.

Search for anything (in my case my ice maker doesn’t produce ice correctly) is now an exercise in futility.

Wonder if we can ever dig ourselves out of this level of shit.

Thanks, tech bros. Really super awesome stuff.

me,
@me@social.taupehat.com avatar

@thomasfuchs the truth of this is so painful. Every search engine out there is now utterly pwned by bullshit auto content generators. "Let me tell you about [search query]. First of all, [search query] means [definition]. Here are some examples. Here are also some ads..."

Today I got my an "Indestructables" brand chew toy and not only has he not shredded it yet but he's also proved that the squeakers can handle a lot of punishment. Sadly for everyone in the house, as well as the dog when it gets taken away from him at bedtime, the squeakers are of the rubber-chicken variety.

Milo, a year-old black lab mix, is having a great time chewing on his very noisy chew toy.

@djlink oh wow, I recognize that. The graph on the left is our microservice API dependency map and the graph on the right is the wiring diagram for one of our distribution switch racks.

Honestly it's easier to keep the former in your head and map the latter by wiggling the cable you're interested in.

So far, I am really liking for my s3 hosting for my Mastodon instance.

FLEXIFY.IO made moving from AWS to BackBlaze a breeze, and although I could have moved everything manually with rclone, etc, it only costed $1.18 to have it moved. (FLEXIFY.IO gave me a $20 credit.) It was fast, too.

After a year, AWS S3 pricing got out of hand for my few accounts selfhosted instance now that my free trial is over

Edit:Fixed flexify.io name typo

@paul they're the greatest. I'm using them for backups and the bill is almost hilariously small.
