UAV [aka ‘Drone’] Surveying At The UK’s Ordnance Survey [podcast]

https://thegeomob.com/podcast/episode-234 <-- GeoMob podcast link

https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/blog/how-surveying-is-taking-off-at-ordnance-survey <-- blog post on OS UAV use

H/T Doug Newcomb
[A general focus but very interesting and informative]
“James Morrison, head pilot and UAS ("Unmanned Aircraft System") lead at Ordnance Survey, discusses the use of drones in mapping and surveying. He shares examples of how drones were used to quickly assess landslips and update mapping in the Isle of Wight, as well as capture data for residential housing developments. James explains the different types of drones used by Ordnance Survey and their capabilities, including capturing imagery with centimeter-level accuracy…”

@OS

map - OS MasterMap example
photo - OS used a fixed-wing drone to fly over the coal pile on an automated flight route. A series of images were taken with the drone at precise locations across the coal which were then fed into software that ‘stitched’ them into a 3D ‘digital twin’ of the coal pile, using a process called photogrammetry.

ai6yr,

Nice, synthetic aperture radar satellite imaging used for this study! Looks like they're using ICEYE.

My boss is very relaxed and as a result, my job is relaxed. He got promoted and we just hired a new manager to take his place and the new one is obviously eager to please management.

I fear the good days may be over.
Anyone hiring a GIS Analyst / Developer?

I don’t know Joe, but I came across Joe’s work in my role as a geologist (the world topobathy image), and I was impressed so I sought out more; I think you will be impressed as well… [not considered a specific endorsement though, just my personal opinion, you know the drill]…

So what hardware are folks using for Servers at small orgs? Presumably to run Enterprise and a PostGIS server?

We're pricing out cloud services and an on-premesis server is going to be a lot cheaper in the short and long run.

Really chuffed that I'm starting to get some people donating to me via https://www.buymeacoffee.com/rtwilson as a thank you for geospatial things I've created like the FreeGISData site (https://freegisdata.rtwilson.com/), British Placename Mapper (https://placenames.rtwilson.com/) and my blog (https://blog.rtwilson.com/). It's a relatively small amount of money but it puts a big smile on my face :)
