Wow, neat -- just had an out-of-the-blue request for what I think was my very first FOSS public software: a client-side robot that played Id's Quake way back in 1998

The shovels on the side of that cybertruck tool rack are just an absolutely iconic piece of industrial design from somebody who has never in their lives done a job, met anyone doing a job, or once gave a passing thought to anyone potentially considering a job, that might give them a callus.

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@mhoye @SnoopJ Fine, you made me look at cybertruck pictures.

Those shovels look great for doing ground-breaking ceremonies! Just need a touch of gold around the top or something?

I'm now backing up all my github repositories to my NAS, using @charmcli's soft-serve new mirroring feature.

Now I always have, in my network, an eventually up to date copy of the repos I need :)

TLDR: I can pull/clone/etc even if GitHub is having issues, and push later ✅

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@suchipi @caarlos0 There's "gitolite" too, which I run on a VPS so that I can just blindly push all my repos with an alias before going remote (and not have to think about stuff like "should this be public?")

(Doesn't replace the above but might compliment it, depending on use-case). I've had zero problems with for years, it "just works".

This is one of those articles that I'd love to hear people's thoughts on, but only after they've actually read the entire article:

Outside of the occasional snarky comment on shenanigans or sharing of an article or two, I won't be posting much on the Alberta Election.

However, please watch this brief video by Barry Morishita of the Alberta Party.

His words resonate here. Though we need to get rid of Danielle Smith, there is no accountability or governing effectiveness if we ping-pong between two parties.

A minority govt with a moderate third party is progress.

https://vimeo.com/822565708

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 While I can agree with your desired outcome of "having more viable parties" I don't see any way this doesn't just suck progressive votes away from the only actual alternative to dooming the province to more

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 I think the problem is way, way deeper than that.
I don't know what "policy screwup" you're imagining, but nobody knows or talks about any policies.

It's orange vs. blue.

Ask anyone who "hates" some party to name a single policy (of that or any other party).

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 (Also, cool: but fix it after this election please ;)

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 I really don't see how yet another "center-right" party helps any of this. We need some actually-left style parties if you want to expand the acceptable debate in ("Overton Window")

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 The NDP is also centrist.
(What do you think is different about the Alberta Party?)

There's no "left" in Alberta currently: there's the NDP + Alberta party milling somewhere around the center and a far-right UCP trying to turn us into Florida.

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 What is a "definitely left" policy ever held by the Alberta NDP?

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 Yeah, I think we mostly agree -- except I'm saying we need more left voices so I'd way rather see a "clearly different" party rather than the Alberta Party (which AFAICT is largely similar to the NDP).

Drew Barnes, who was kicked out of the UCP caucus in May 2021 and served as an independent MLA in Cypress-Medicine Hat, says he's not going to seek re-election.

He announced it in a video.

meejah,

@robsonfletcher Awww, I was hoping he'd follow through on his threats to start an "even more right" party than the UCP haha

I don’t understand, can someone please enlighten me?
I keep seeing statements about how the hard part of Mastodon is figuring out what server to join.
I see things in my feed from many different servers. So why does it make a difference which one I belong to?

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@wanderinghermit The "local" timeline (which is just toots from your instance), and how admins do their thing (e.g. policies, how diligent they are, what other instances are blocked, etc)

Thank you to @bragefuglseth and the folks in the App Icon Design team ( https://matrix.to/#/#appicondesign:gnome.org ) for help designing a new icon for Phosh Antispam!

We are looking to possibly rename the app, so if you have ideas, they are welcome!

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@bragefuglseth @bjoessi @kop316 I've always found "made up names" to be good for at least search visibility. (But can be harder to remember).

I know naming is pretty arbitrary, but do the Gnome HIGs have like "further justification and/or discussion" anywhere? Do they get translated, or is it literally "Stoplight" in all languages?

(Icon looks great, BTW!)

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@bragefuglseth I do like how clean and more-consistent the newest GNOME things are for sure. And yeah, in a lot of places "any guidelines at all" will improve things :) as far as consistency.

Alberta is about to enter another election campaign and one thing that's actually not all that easy to find is...

... the candidates!

Seriously, it's actually kinda hard to find -- all in one place, online -- who's running where, with links to their websites/bios, etc.

I hope to make that a lot easier with a series of interactive tools that we will launch on Monday at cbc.ca/calgary

Here's a sneak preview...

A screenshot of an interactive map of electoral districts in Calgary and the candidates in one district, Calgary-Buffalo, highlighted.
