"If the plan is to convert everything worth converting into goodbye kiss revenues for a sunsetting industry, eventually a petrostate will need greater control of its populace & its democracy. The successful implementation of Bills 20 & 18 are vehicles to that end."

Wildfires in Canada have roared back to life, sending harmful smoke into the northern United States — an unwelcome reminder of last summer’s historic fire season that also repeatedly sent plumes of noxious haze southward.

Climate change emerging as biggest caribou threat: study

Habitat loss has long been considered the principle cause for concern

“There are a litany of reasons to do restoration and caribou aren’t the only species on the landscape. I think it behooves society to undo the disturbances we’ve created”

Didn't sleep. Still trying to wrap my brain around it. Feels unprecedented. Feels like the most anti-democratic centralization of power by a Canadian premier ever. The moves of a tyrant with an aim towards an anti-Canadian Separatism we never signed up for

Holy SHIT!! Alberta UCP have gone completely MAGA - this is beyond belief...

Ripping up the Municipalities Act, total provincial control over cities, towns and districts - banning voting machines

Fascism lives here folks

Is this the small government Albertans voted for?

"Bill 20 would also grant the province sweeping powers over municipalities, including the right to fire councillors, overturn bylaws and postpone elections."

For context, Red Deer is about the same size as Barrhaven and growing more slowly.

Whatever happens with and , I don't see it growing to 1M powered by a scheme that involves burning stuff and then pretending to suck CO2 back out off the air by burning even more stuff.

Reality check:
To be legitimately worried about the impact of an added 3¢ carbon price on you gas, it seems to me it would need to add at least half a percent of your income.

Alberta median household income >$100,000
0.5% of $100,000 = $500
$500 at 3¢/litre = $16,000 worth of fuel
At an inflated average price of $1.50/l
… you bought 11,000 litres of fuel.
You drive enough to use up the tank on an F-150 at least twice a week.

That means you are the problem.

On the one hand, Danielle Smith is timing the re-instatement of the Provincial Fuel Tax at the same time that the Carbon Tax is raised, so she can blame all price increases on the Federal government instead of the Provincial government.

What is most disturbing of all however, is the fact that the CPC and the UCP are constantly telling us that multi-billion dollar oil corporations should not pay their own taxes, but should pass the buck to us and make us consumers pay their taxes for them!! /1

ned, (edited )
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

I'm sick and tired of this gaslighting and spin about fuel taxes. Taking away OUR PUBLIC REVENUE is not "saving us money at the pumps". These taxes should take back what is owed to US, the people. Make the 'ing corporations pay their own share out of their own multi-billion dollar PROFITS! Stop letting oil-simping Conservative politicians gaslight people into thinking that we should be paying higher prices because the fuel is taxed!

Paying taxes is a cost of doing business. /3

ned,
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

And of course, we even get to pay for the millions of dollars spent on disinformation campaigns to gaslight us into accepting higher prices at the pump to pay the taxes on behalf of multi-billion dollar oil corporations who don't want to take those taxes out of their multi-billion dollar profits.

ned, (edited )
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

ie, remember EVERY SINGLE ALBERTAN receiving pamphlets in their mail to tell us that "we" just saved 13 cents/litre in gas thanks to the UCP, and claiming that each household has now saved hundreds of dollars a month? Not the oil corporations, who actually saved the money that was supposed to be used for us, but "we" saved money at the pump, according to the disinformation WE paid for.

ned,
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

TL;DR Increase profit and wealth tax, decrease worker's income tax.

This is the right way, and this is the path all progressive governments in North America have been moving towards, and what every regressive Conservative government has been fighting against. Most notably the CPC and their "Axe the Tax" campaign.

While Danielle Smith distracts you by slamming the carbon tax...

...she is raising your taxes by reinstating the 13 cent fuel tax...

...and taking away the tax cut she promised you.

ned,
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

@micropainter Both these taxes are positive and needs to happen, and there needs to be regulation on these multi-billion dollar corporations to stop them from "passing the buck" to consumers, with the Conservative Party of Canada telling everybody that this is the way it's supposed to be. The CPC and UCP are telling us that they're not supposed to pay their taxes, WE'RE supposed to pay it for them!! THAT is what we need to fight against, not taxation. Make them pay their share!
