Scoop: I obtained the contract Samsung requires independent shops to sign to buy phone repair parts from them.

It requires:

  • "Daily" dumps of customer data
  • The "immediate destruction" of any phones a shop comes across that has third-party parts

A fantastic piece prompt by man vs bear...

"Patriarchy has everything to do with men, but at the same time, nothing at all. In a male-centered society where maleness is associated with power, what’s really being centered is power itself. What’s suppressed is mutual relationality. Patriarchy is intertwined with colonialism, racism, and other oppressive social structures based on hierarchy. It is a fundamental fracturing of our human wholeness."

Google search thinks you should use glue to stick together a pizza as its AI is trained on Reddit, where 11 years ago a user called “fucksmith” posted suggesting it was a good idea.

iFixit's had enough with Samsung. That secret contract was only part of the problem.

Anyway, I've been saying Samsung sucks for years. Not sure why it wasn't obvious to anyone who's used one of their crapware-laden devices.

Flask-Mail 0.10 released, after a 10 year hiatus! Thanks to @wlach for picking it up at the sprint. This is part of my Pallets-Eco initiative to get old popular extensions maintained again. It's been unarchived and refreshed. I went through and closed out a lot of the issue backlog. We'll have to figure out what a 1.0 release will look like. https://github.com/pallets-eco/flask-mail/releases/tag/0.10.0

@davidism That felt like a good use of time! Thanks again for all the guidance and help (not to mention all the work you did to get this over the line). Great illustration of why events like are so valuable to the community.

The Google AI isn’t hallucinating about glue in pizza, it’s just over indexing an 11 year old Reddit post by a dude named fucksmith.

@Kurt Large language models are now no longer called "AI", they are called "Fucksmiths". I'm sorry, I don't make the rules.

Anyone have any success (or failure!) at using "post-prompts" in resumes?

mistersql,
@mistersql@mastodon.social avatar

@meejah I've read real resumes where the whole thing is a colossal obvious fabrication & I'm expected to interview them anyhow and check if the liar is a competent developer. Keyword hacking is more than enough to get thru a dodgy hiring process during a hot market. PDFs probably could hide all sort of messages to the bot.

I did a quick google, I guestimate there is a 5% chance that 0.01% of resumes are getting classified by LLMs.

mistersql,
@mistersql@mastodon.social avatar

@meejah It wouldn't get past HR, there still is a human in the loop. I can imagine the popular jailbreak scripts (very authoritarian role play trying to get the bot to be obedient) making a great impression on the hiring person.

"using linux is difficult. i think it would be simpler for me, a lone consumer in a mid-sized city, to bend the corporate behemoth that is microsoft to my will" is an absolutely wild take.

bamboombibbitybop,
@bamboombibbitybop@mastodon.social avatar

@meejah @ghorwood which laptop(s) do you recommend to people?

bamboombibbitybop,
@bamboombibbitybop@mastodon.social avatar

@ghorwood What Linux is missing for everyday folks to adopt it is normal people don't want to install an OS. If you could go into Best Buy and buy a laptop that had Fedora with KDE pre-installed and configured, people would quickly realize that it's actually very solid and usable for non-tech people.

"It's simple -- just download the .iso of your favorite distro (oh, also, pick one), boot into your BIOS, partition your disks, pick a DE, click install"

No, it's not. That's too much for most.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@meejah @bamboombibbitybop you can spend a lot of money at system76, if you want.

also, pop is my recommended distro in general. it's slick and the "i have an nvidia card" iso solution to graphics drivers is pretty damn great.

How much an insane dinosaur will I be if I ask my junior to use 2 space indents in vs the PEP-8 4 space waste-of-whitespace?

Actually, I think I might prefer 3, but I'm pretty sure everyone will hate me if I pick an odd prime...

XRY and Cellebrite say they can do consent-based full filesystem extraction with iOS, Android and GrapheneOS. It means they can extract data from the device once the user provides the lock method, which should always be expected. They unlock, enable developer options and use ADB.

GrapheneOS,
@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social avatar

Cellebrite's list of capabilities provided to customers in April 2024 shows they can successfully exploit every non-GrapheneOS Android device brand both BFU and AFU, but not GrapheneOS if patch level is past late 2022. It shows only Pixels stop brute force via the secure element.

Capability table described by the tweet. We can't properly format the tabular data as alt text but we can share it elsewhere.

Does anyone happen to know if it is possible to get a projector for an open space at ? I have some ideas that involve discussions of code where it would be useful if a participant could share their screen with a larger group.

@meejah Looking at my past work, looks like ngtcp2 is the library I chose to go w/ for my ntunnel probject. It's MIT licensed, so a good fit, and I have some of the boilerplate implemented, but need to start implementing the basics for it.

encthenet,
@encthenet@flyovercountry.social avatar

@feld @meejah It is, but I haven't spent much time extending it. Partly as I haven't done much python stuff in the last year or two.
