I need you to listen to the deeply broken text-to-speech narration from this Google blog post. (They removed it after people pointed out how bad it was, but I promise you this was actual audio on a real official Google blog post.)

I feel like the funny thing for me with the Tiktok ban is that a lot of Americans, on either side of the debate, don't seem to realize that Tiktok feels to Americans like every single social media platform feels to people outside the US. You're telling me the app is located outside your country and your government's control, and you don't know how its data gets handled in that country? That's every app, to me.

Hey! Would you like to work with me? @axodotdev is hiring, and I happen to think it's a great place to work. If you happen to be passionate about making high-quality devtools like I am, you should think about joining me!

We have positions open for a systems engineer (permanent full-time), a front-end engineer (contract full-time), and developer marketing (contract part-time).

The most old-fashioned thing I do as a developer is wrap names in terminal output using `' instead of ``.

Ever wonder why you see things formatted like `this' in commandline tools? It's because in the old fonts used by early versions of Unix, the backtick actually looked like an open quote while the ASCII single quote looked like a closed quote. If you viewed it on the machines those tools were written on, it looked like smart quotes. You still see it in many manpages.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

@mcc Happy birthday!

The covers of these two jazz compilations have some very good colours, IMO

Looks like it's official - Akira Toriyama, world-famous manga artist, passed away on March 1. The website is failing under load, so here's a copy of the letter.

Dragon Ball was the first manga I ever read that I knew was manga. Owned an issue of the French run of the original series, and read it obsessively as a kid. Genuinely a global ambassador for the art form.

New blog post! I set out to dump an arcade game and correct MAME's database, only to end up discovering that this game revision didn't actually exist in the first place - or rather, once properly dumped, it was actually a duplicate of another one.

A real #digipres lesson here, and a reminder that even widely-used and well-maintained catalogues are fallible. It can be just as important to deduplicate entries and remove phantom ones as to discover new ones.

Good news on the #AnalogCable front: the Ghidra team have fixed a bug in the COFF loader. It can now load SysV (ISC) binaries!

I've been ripping into the ANIC utilities this evening. The ANICDownload utility (which boots the ANIC) has full symbols. Sadly the "LXTest" utility has been stripped...and seems to be written in Pascal! (it's full of Pascal strings)

Sometimes when I open up my Lenovo+Linux laptop, I find it's just sut off, for no apparent reason. Sometimes it does this even when battery is at more than 50%. I feel like this really shouldn't be happening.

From the archives: I wrote about Ganbare! Inuchan, a CD-ROM game about a dog who starts a band. Based on a comic by a real-life indie rocker, it's a real love letter to genuine DIY - the intentionally crude MacPaint artstyle and frequent references to Mac tools tell the player "you can do this too".

This is a fascinating concept for games studies - "quotes" of a game that don't just show you a clip of gameplay, but actually let you take control and try it out. It trims the ROM down to only what's needed to run the quote, so this might even pass a fair dealing/fair use test in court if it came down to it - just like quoting a passage of text, or a clip of a movie.

For the last year I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening To Today" links in this thread:

https://mastodon.social/@mcc/108199886340178151

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:

@mcc Oh this is a fun one!

misty,
@misty@digipres.club avatar

@mcc Semi-related, I feel like the question of what "chiptune" is gets hard to interpret in fun ways for these. Like, is a .mod chiptune if its written on and for Amiga but not if it's written on a PC tracker? Is an .s3m a chiptune if it's written for Gravis Ultrasound? Does it stop being chiptune if it's played back using a software tracker player?

misty,
@misty@digipres.club avatar

@mcc Yeah, definitely; that's where I bring up Amiga and Gravis Ultrasound - they're both hardware, with a set number of channels (and other hardware audio features - eg Scream Tracker has a panning feature that's exclusive to Gravis Ultrasound because it's using a hardware feature from that specific platform). But it means you get a fun boundary where the same 4-channel mod composed for Amiga can be played back in software with non-identical rendering on DOS
