Hey , how do you go about funding your communities?

Thanks everyone for voting, and sharing the poll!

I'd also love to hear what kind of paid benefits you offer to your community, for those who do.

as I alluded to yesterday, I actually wrote something about the problem with link embeds, how they potentially DDoS servers, and how we can (kinda) fix it.

Does anybody know a PeerTube instance which does accept registrations and uploads?

I'd be willing to pay a few Euros.

Or a really cheap web hoster, where I could install my own?

The instance, I was using has apparently gone away.

Update: The instance, I was using was only temporarily down and is back up. So: no urgency.

In the long run, I will probably just run my own instance.

@mina My instance is hosted by https://weingaertner-it.de/

They offer some different fediverse services.
I'm very happy with it.

friends: are there any downsides to turning on the "Content cache retention period"? I've noticed that my database's content cache table is very large, and I realized I hadn't set a retention time for it.

Is there an all in one "So you want to run a fediverse instance" type guidebook in relation to legal, moderation and long term sustainability tasks?

Things like templates for Privacy Policies, Server Rules and About sections, understanding moderation tasks and the importance of having multiple administrators, funding plans.

How to deal with government requests for data.

All the fun things.

Hi friends! Our SysAdmins are still blocked by a network issue that prevents our migration to the new servers. We are running out of ideas and would appreciate any possible support. If you have or know someone who has experience with IPv6 networks, then please contact me or another member of our staff. We would earnestly appreciate any help or advice!

The problem, as I understand it, is that traffic fails to pass through our OPNSense firewall. We have a /48 block allocated on the WAN side, and want to expose a public IP from the LAN. See this reply for a longer description and some discussion.

Boosts appreciated! 💙

IFTAS releases a practical guide for fediverse admins and platform creators (among others) subject to the EU’s Digital Services Act. Which would be…everyone.

Remember, hosting a fediverse instance is a collaborative effort, not just with your co-admins, but your users and admins of other instances. Any knowledge you can share about your experiences serves to strengthen the larger federated community.

do you block the ip of bots in your firewall ?
I’m not sure if there’s a better way

New spam bot wave with multiple accounts - search for hashtag x4 to find them all. Some of them also include auth links to mastodon instances, looks like a phishing attempt or something.

I have reported a sample to:

ohai.social
universeodon.com
troet.cafe
mastodon.social

gunchleoc,
@gunchleoc@mastodon.scot avatar

The following domains have taken care of the x4 spam:

mastodon.social
ohai.social
universeodon.com

Found another domain:

drumstodon.net

Moderators should also block the following e-mail domain:

zelda.quest

HIGHLY recommend Fediblock for user '@MKULTRADiamond' as they're tagging random users and spamming porn with no CW. Receipts attached in the screenshot.

Edit: The whole instance is Freeze Peach. Toss it in the trash.

Recommending Fediblock for instance 'jforo.com' as it's literally just a bunch of spam bots that are spamming hashtags.

So....I keep thinking about this Sharkey migration and as I see it, I have 2 options:

  1. Attempt to re-migrate to beaware.live (my main domain) even though I briefly already had an instance there and risk potential federation issues.

  2. Migrate to beaware.social (new domain) and redirect beaware.live to it which shouldn't cause issues.

In all honesty, if I could be almost positive I could do the first option with little or no federation issues, I'd rather go that route. BUT, if I can't get a definitive answer on if that would work or not, the second option is always there....any advice?

After looking through a few of the guides I was recommended, I'm realizing that this whole idea might be over my head...😬

GoToSocial has just announced the 0.15.0 release candidate and it's got some new features and updates:

  • User Profile Custom Themes (choose your own!)
  • Move Activities (follows move with you)
  • Post Filters (Mastodon V1 support)
  • Hide your Follows / Followers Counts
  • Updated Swagger API Docs

The official GtS Sunset (light) theme, with purple, red and orange highlights.

Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?

I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.

My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷‍♂️

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬

Ugh. I wish Fedi wasn't so reliant on domains....

Back when my naive self started Fedi, I went with the most known software (mastodon). But after months of dev incompetence, it's obviously not where I want to be, but I like my domain....

I guess I'm basically stuck with all these bad UI updates and no moderation features....😬🤦‍♂️

So....I want to migrate from Mastodon to Sharkey. The catch is, I would LIKE to end up back on my current domain....is this possible at all?

I have a domain I could park a Sharkey instance to migrate to, but if I make a new Sharkey instance on my current domain after I shut the Mastodon instance down, will I be able to migrate back with little issue?🤔

Fediadmins, are any of you seeing weird issues in your queues from lemmy instances?

lemmy.world was single handedly backing our incoming queue, as AP events would fail, and then be rescheduled to be re-tried again later. But then whilst waiting for them to re-try, more would come in.

We're seeing the behaviour from multiple lemmy instances, but lemmy.world is the biggest culprit, despite not being the most subscribed to instance by our users.

The activities in question are mostly votes, and Sharkey doesn't know what to do with them, so simply keeps retrying them until they fail

Does Mastodon have the same issue, or is it handling votes differently?

Danke @qbi für deine objektive Einschätzung zu dem Thema und . Deckt sich so ziemlich mit meiner Einschätzung.

Threads auf Mastodon für alle blockieren?

cliffwade, (edited ) to mastodon
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

Admins, remember, it's YOUR decision if you decide to defederate, block or mute Threads on YOUR server, or if you choose to NOT do any of those.

There are many others out there that will try and force their opinion(s) down your throat as much as possible, but in the end, the server is YOUR SERVER, not theirs.

You run your server how YOU want, not how others would like for you to run your server.

As they say, YOU DO YOU!
