My employer, Shopify, announced layoffs today and I've been affected. If you're looking for someone with deep experience with developer tooling and developer environments, I'd love to work with you. I've spent the last two years building Shopify's in-house cloud developer environment, and I have extensive experience building developer tools as one of members of the Homebrew package manager's Project Leadership Committee.

I feel like the funny thing for me with the Tiktok ban is that a lot of Americans, on either side of the debate, don't seem to realize that Tiktok feels to Americans like every single social media platform feels to people outside the US. You're telling me the app is located outside your country and your government's control, and you don't know how its data gets handled in that country? That's every app, to me.

This is a fascinating concept for games studies - "quotes" of a game that don't just show you a clip of gameplay, but actually let you take control and try it out. It trims the ROM down to only what's needed to run the quote, so this might even pass a fair dealing/fair use test in court if it came down to it - just like quoting a passage of text, or a clip of a movie.

Oh man, this news story. Former MLA from Manitoba asks Meta's own "ask AI" chatbot if a phone number he found on Google is really Meta support. It tells him yes. It isn't, and he's scammed out of $500 and control of his accounts. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/facebook-customer-support-scam-1.7219581

This is a new one. I've never actually seen a website admit that autoplaying videos are a punishment for users they don't like, rather than a way to try to attract users.

Looks like the same attack that took down the British Library for so long also targeted the US Library of Congress, but good multifactor auth and fast action from their IT and security staff protected them. https://www.nextgov.com/cybersecurity/2024/05/thwarted-cyberattack-targeted-library-congress-tandem-october-british-library-breach/396399/

Looks like it's official - Akira Toriyama, world-famous manga artist, passed away on March 1. The website is failing under load, so here's a copy of the letter.

New blog post! I'm always seeing "first CD-ROM game" citations that are totally inconsistent, or which cite games like Myst, so I decided to put together a timeline of all the candidates - and ended up calling into question the point of "firsts" lists in the first place.

New blog post! I wrote about Journey to the Source, a CD-ROM travelogue that follows a team of people as they go 6,300 kilometres down the Yangtze to find its source. It's a really interesting disc, as much about the people who live all along that river and their lives as it is about making that discovery. So many things have changed there in the years since, so I loved getting an impression of daily life that's long gone.

Hey BBS knowers of the fediverse: question that’ll help me with research for something I'm writing.

Have you ever seen an offline BBS archive? I don't mean the files, but an actual way to browse a snapshot of a BBS at a point in time, with the original interface and content all preserved?

It's a good thing that a religious schism among the people with the most unrealistic ideas about an emerging technology is the biggest story in the tech news cycle, right. That's normal

Google's getting rid of the ability to view cached pages. Even though they weren't a permanent archive, I'm going to miss it. It’s been such a useful way to find copies of pages with the actual search result on dynamic pages where the current version doesn't have what Google found.

Sending a freeware program dev a thank you letter just now. I realized I don't always express my gratitude to developers who spend so much of their time making free things that I use in my daily life, and I really need to get in the habit of telling people how grateful I am.

Oof, this is a rough situation. It's a shame that Mastodon still doesn't have support for migrating domain names; the idea that a server which has existed for six years has to shut down because it's losing control of its domain name is very rough.

Advice: someone's ported the archives of the classic @Horse_ebooks and is rerunning it on Mastodon. Giving me the best kind of early twitter nostalgia. It's still just as good.
