Busily spending part of my weekend enjoying one aspect of my job at the Archive - sorting through uploads of a certain type - in this case, anything calling itself a "Manual". There are hundreds of people uploading a single manual for the most obscure of things, and the style and breadth is amazing.

@textfiles How do people contribute those?

mjibrower,
@mjibrower@mastodon.social avatar

@textfiles The last time I looked into scanning and uploading, the form I found required an ISBN. None of my manuals (like the one for a 1964 Rambler) have one. :-) Do you have a link to a better form?

'The power-user way to use Google Search web now takes a lot of clicks. You'd want to click on "more" and then "Web" for actual web results, and then to get Google to actually pay attention to the words you type in, you'd want to click "Tools" and change "all results" to "verbatim." Alternatively, you could also find a more web-focused search engine instead of Google.'

@thezenlady I actually started using this technique yesterday, and it works well. It's similar to old Google.

@JohnJBurnsIII This is what Bing does too. I’m finishing up a pointless Coursera certificate, and when I forget that I’m in Edge (Edge is the only browser that lets me log in to Coursera, but FF is the only one that some of their Jupyter notebooks work in w/o having to reset the kernel every time) and accidentally search Bing, even with web selected it wants to give a summary. A lot of the time its summary is the exact answer to the Coursera activity. 🙄

mjibrower,
@mjibrower@mastodon.social avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII @thezenlady I think if you were really dedicated you could save it in your search engine defaults? I saw a thread about that the other day but can't find it now. Apparently there's a FF extension, too.

“People seem to be tired of reboots and superheroes. What can we do?”

“We could foster original work and new talent—let them make fresh movies that bring a new generation into cinemas?”

“Nah, let’s reboot an 80s TV show nobody’s heard about and then call the audience ungrateful when it flops”

Now that my son (the youngest) is 20 and in college, he will occasionally ask me for writing advice.

After looking at his thesis and intro: "Good set up! Now you need to think of a bunch of smart things to say."

(It's an art history class comparing paintings)

Idk why I had to read so far in this article before it just happened to mention that these “zombie” schools had .education, .com, and .org domains. Legit schools use .edu, which requires an extra couple of hoops to jump through at registration. Don’t send money to a “university” with a .com domain, folks.

State Farm is cancelling our insurance because apparently we are the kind of homeowners who file claims.

We’ve filed three claims in 16 years. Two of them we ended up paying out of pocket because they didn’t meet the deductible. State Farm paid ~$5K on the other one.

We’ve paid an awful lot of money through the years for a lousy $5k payout. Starting to think a high-yield savings account makes more sense than an insurance policy.

I just remembered the time in 5th grade when my friend & I decided to observe May Day by delivering flowers to our neighbors’ porches. We started out well, making little paper baskets and filling them with roses from our yards... and then we ran out of paper and started just throwing flowers on porches. One neighbor called our moms & told them we were “littering” his porch. 🙄

mjibrower,
@mjibrower@mastodon.social avatar

@petes_bread_eqn_xls I should reach out to my friend (she’s on FB) and see if she remembers it. He also tried to sue her mom bc their cats may or may not have desecrated his garden. It didn’t go far; her mom was a brand-new lawyer at the time (in that mid-70s post-divorce surge of new women lawyers).

Today I got my first community violation on TikTok. It was a video about Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing that went on for minutes but failed to mention that McVeigh was a far right Republican white supremacist. That seemed like a pretty stark omission to me, so I left the fact as a comment. First, I was flooded by hateful responses. Then TikTok deleted the comment and issued me a “strike.” I appealed and was denied. I doubt a human ever reviewed it.

mjibrower,
@mjibrower@mastodon.social avatar

@fraying I mean, I always assume that EVERYBODY knows that, but I lived in OKC in 1995 (four miles from downtown). The line between McVeigh and today's MAGA crowd is very short and very straight.

mjibrower,
@mjibrower@mastodon.social avatar

@fraying It especially bothers me when my fellow Oklahomans who I know had "never forget" magnets on their '95 Blazers and Neons are on the same side as McVeigh now.

The greatest rewards in teaching are:

Watching the light go on in a student's eyes.

Hearing from former students who got something useful out of your work together.

Having former students surpass anything you've done.

@dangillmor I recently realized that my 7th-grade yearbook has both a convicted murderer AND a Pulitzer prize winner in it. I wonder what our teachers make (or made) of that.
