So a Tesla crashed into a train now...and we all remembered when a cyclist was killed. If we're not going to have the guts to outright outlaw self-driving cars, can we at least have some sensible restrictions? Like maybe:
a warning light on the front when self-driving is happening, so peds/cyclists can beware
when not on a controlled access highway, maximum speed 5 mph below the limit
automatic disabling in school zones, construction zones/areas
Re: my most recent reply in my #NewYearsResolution2024 thread about avoiding sweets and weight loss: I'm legit curious about the physiology I'm dealing with. If my main goal is to lose belly fat, and I'm NOT doing a ton of weight lifting (more cardio), I should be able to measure my progress with some weight loss, right?
I've heard the whole "muscle is denser than fat, so you might get slimmer but not lose weight" thing...but what if I'm not adding a bunch of muscle?
@mmdolbow Better to track loss with dimension measures not weight measures. In your case, measure the waist if that is the goal. But that can be discouraging if there is a lot of fat to lose so perhaps do other standard measures to see progress.
@hankg no idea on calorie deficits... I'm probably making up for missing the sweets by overeating some other stuff. (At least for now.)
Weight loss is only like a pound so far. I'm typically between 170-175. Goal from the last time I "felt slim" is 160-165, so we're not talking massive changes.
Anyway, it's almost gig time...got the car mostly packed and dinner is over, dishes washed. Got about an hour to chill before I hit the road. Have a great weekend #fediverse !
My childhood best friend would have been 49 yesterday. We grew up together, went to college together, and she was killed in a car accident in 1999, 7 months before she was to stand up in my wedding.
She was 24 when she died. She's been gone now about as long as she lived.
I hope there's a peaceful afterlife so I can see her again someday. I miss her terribly and have so much to tell her.
All right, it starts today! And no shortage of temptations around, either, with the wife making loads of treats yesterday. At least the oldest is heading back to college tomorrow and will likely take a bunch with him.
Whatever you all can do to keep me honest, much appreciated!
Today I am giving thanks for all the blessings I personally enjoy, and praying for a better world in 2024, one where more people enjoy the same blessings.
Maybe one day, maybe after we eliminate the concept of a billionaire, it could be ALL people.
Five months ago today, I was recovering from my first (known) #COVID infection. It took me weeks to feel normal.
Now, as I prepare to get on a plane next week for the first time since then, I am incredibly nervous and anxious. Especially cuz I know I'll be one of only a few people #masking at the airport and on the plane.
Maybe we'll all luck out and not catch the latest variant. Maybe the risk will seem worth it to see my family.
Maybe the worst part (emotionally anyway) is that my infection cancelled a similar trip. And that trip would have taken place around the nadir of infections (at least here in MN). And from a weather perspective, would have been more fun.
I want my kids to know my nieces more than just some pictures. Yes, we're all vaxxed with updated boosters. But that was also the case in July.
So much of this is out of our control. When peaks and valleys occur. When new variants evolve to beat our vaxxes. Heck, half the time, I bet folks who get it don't know HOW they got it. (I had a guess, but couldn't pinpoint exactly.)
And it's so frustrating to know that a simple thing like masking, something we CAN control, is too much for too many people to bother with.
Yes, it's uncomfortable and inconvenient. So are shoes and shirts sometimes, but we've agreed on those.
I now have 999 followers #OnHere - wow! I don't remember how long it took me to get there on the #hellsite, but it was WAY longer than the ~14 months I've been using Mastodon, I know that.
Of course, I'm doing things way differently here, too - following a ton more folx, following back almost everyone, and NOT feeling like I need to catch every post, every day. It's been a great change for me.
Thank you all for joining me! Who will be my 1,000th follower?
Given the randomness of Mastodon, I don't know how much is "cool" to promote things like side projects. I definitely don't think I'll get a lot of mileage out of one post. But how many is too many? 10? 20?
Anyway, here's my next band gig. If you are in #Minnesota and/or are a #Music fan, I'd love a boost or two. Y'all are awesome!
Moving my kid into his dorm for sophomore year, and it's so funny watching my wife make his bed and unpack with him. (He himself is an active participant, so it's not like she's doing everything for him while he plays in his phone.)
I don't know what her parents did, but the contrast with mine is remarkable: they were like, "all right, here's your shit, have a good semester." #GenX#College
I want to say I'm the only patient in this dental office that is masking, but right now, it looks like I'm the only patient in this dental office. ¯\(ツ)/¯

And he doesn’t even make sense! 😂 It’s like he doesn’t understand how airborne viruses work, and that individual responsibility is undermined by others’ reckless disregard for public health and safety! What an absolute walnut! 🤣
