Fantastic Mrs Fox

At first glance I thought I saw a dog, then realised it was a fox.

Beautiful animal

@Vibracobra23 six shillings feels so much more than 30p... but then I'm remembering how much 6/- seemed to be then and can't avoid that 30p seems so little now.

morgrugyn,
@morgrugyn@mastodon.social avatar

@Vibracobra23 a pint of beer for 30p or so and maybe even 20 No. 6, not that that was a vice. I don't remember booze/fags in £sd...

I've really got no idea what to call this feature on one of David Barclay's glorious townhouses on Dowanside Road in the west end of Glasgow, but I love it. You can't quite tell from this photo, but it's projecting from the side of the building rather than sitting on the ground. I'm presuming it dates from around 1900 when the building it's attached to was constructed.

morgrugyn,
@morgrugyn@mastodon.social avatar

@thisismyglasgow an oriel, maybe. My Oxford Dictionary of Architecture says 'Large *bay-window projecting from the *naked of a wall on an upper story, supported on brackets, *corbels, a *pier, or *engaged column.'. Whatever, it's lovely. Thank you.

Hey @paleofire, I have a student that I am helping with his dissertation project and he needs to count . Do you guys have any go to texts for lab and counting methods? I have not done this type of analysis before. @geoscience

morgrugyn,
@morgrugyn@mastodon.social avatar

@NikaShilobod @paleofire @geoscience what do you mean by count? Number of bits, mass, etc.? Somewhere I have a report published by someone who worked for NT... sorry to be vague. It was broadly about identifying charcoal burning platforms in Plym Bridge Woods. If this is useful I'll try to hunt it down.

@morgrugyn@mastodon.social avatar

@Vibracobra23 our Meneage one is much later, 2009... a distant reprint! We bought the Manaccan one from Bookends of Fowey for the princely sum of £3.

@Vibracobra23 all cataloged on our (antandbee), which is a bit of a chore as the church guides almost always have to be added manually. But useful for checking when we're browsing in Oxfam or second hand bookshops.

Trying to understand tiddlywiki. I think @valpackett has made something which connects to it and is usable on a phone but I'm having trouble understanding what it is for at the moment. Still reading the docs https://tiddly.packett.cool/

morgrugyn,
@morgrugyn@mastodon.social avatar

@Sbectol it's whatever you want it to be... notes, diary, database, writing and more... all at the same time. As simple or almost limitlessly extensible as you like. It's also frustrating but dive in and give it a whirl.

morgrugyn,
@morgrugyn@mastodon.social avatar

@Sbectol yes, generally that's what happens but I think it's possible to have a multi-file TW. But I'm aware that some TWs have many 1000s of tiddlers. I'm still a novice but the community is great and really helpful. I'll admit the documentation can be difficult but it's easy to start simple and see what happens. Go to https://tiddlywiki.com/ and poke around. Join the discussion group at https://talk.tiddlywiki.org/

morgrugyn,
@morgrugyn@mastodon.social avatar

@Sbectol it can be daunting to begin with. Start by going to https://tiddlywiki.com/ scroll down a bit and click the green Download button under GettingStarted. Then bash around a bit in the file you've saved. You can't break anything! There are other ways to do it also but that's how I started. The links to documentation/help may be useful.

1/16 This July, I gave an invited talk in the "Communicating Science Through Art" session at the European Astronomical Society annual meeting, organized by the amazing @theastrophoenix . And I thought it may be something that would also interest you #fediverse folks.

The aim of the talk was partly to give people insight into my why & how of my art. But mainly to encourage others to just try. In a very subjective manner.

The cart entrance to the old Crown Mill on Washington Street in the Anderston Area of Glasgow. This Italianate building was constructed in 1862, but all that is now left is the boarded up ground floor. However, you can still see traces of the company's name as a ghost sign above the door.

Love this little guy. He's carved on a corbel at the base of an arch over a tenement door on Killearn Street in the Possilpark area of Glasgow. He's one of a series of heads on the same block, but each one is different.

So far, haven't seen similar heads on any other tenements round Glasgow, but then again I've yet to check them all!

Thanks to TouretteIn over on Twitter for pointing me towards them.
