How do you make a with a group of people? In some activist circles a method of "consent" decision making has become popular.

In a new post on Indoxicate I try to clear up some of the confusion around this idea, and I articulate a criticism that should (I think) be taken seriously by the movement.

The method, whatever it virtues, has little to do with . By using the term nonetheless, groups run a risk of cultivating an abusive practice.

@mia This is brilliant, and from 2012! Thanks a lot, I think this is a very similar approach. This will help me untangle the origins a bit more. And ‘lazy consensus’ is a much better term.

I see the news cycle touches once more on the 'cloud', and how it's a crucial source of revenue for the big surveillance capitalists.

Well, let me say it again, 'the cloud' does not exist. It's just someone else's computer instead of yours.

I wrote about this earlier:

This is such an important point @Frey makes about ‘field’ epidemiology. 👇🏻

“What we currently call field epidemiology would make far more sense reimagined as a situated practice. That is, as work performed by local public health professionals with longstanding ties to the affected communities and a stake in their long-term health.”

Flying in a troupe of predominantly white experts to save the day has a distinctively colonial ring to it.

I've just started reading William L. Shirer's Berlin Diary, and I can recommend it (so far)

Shirer was a foreign correspondent (for a US paper) in Berlin, and this covers the period 1934-1940.

Sure, it's easy to find historical parallels (because you can cherry-pick), but blimey this is a sobering read.

We don't have any great orators today (like Hitler was, according to Shirer). But then again, people's sensibility has deteriorated so much that fascism might no longer require them.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but World Central Kitchen was responsible for the much-written-about maritime aid corridor from Cyprus. Israel has targeted WCW aid workers, murdering seven. WCW has halted its operations in Gaza, because… well because Israel murders their people. So Israel has shut down the maritime corridor a few weeks after it started by murdering those operating it. Do I get this right?

The barbarity of Israel’s violence is indescribable, while the complicity of the West continues

The Russian elections are a sham. This is obvious.

But Western media are rubbing it in a little too much for it to sound like journalism. It's almost as if media have been instructed to report on these elections in a specific way, using specific language. And that's propaganda.

Anyone else noticed this?

A Dutch appeals court has ruled that The Netherlands must stop supplying parts to Israël within 7 days.

The court judges that there is a real and obvious risk Israel uses the F35 jet fighters to commit war crimes in .

Bound by international treaties, The Netherlands is required to suspend all trade when there's an obvious risk traded weapons are used in war crimes.

This is a victory for those who are on the right side of history. End complicity to now!

I wrote something about that question.

TL;DR colonialism is destructive and unjust + Israel is a colonial project

What the ruling means: (1/2)

It legally proves that that was not an exaggerated term for us to use. The court ruled that the evidence makes it at least plausible is committing and inciting genocide.

Israël is a transgressor, a suspect, an international and humanitarian risk, and a potential vehicle for barbarism.

The era of unconditional support should be over. In fact, support for Israël's politics should become extremely suspect.

msteenhagen,
@msteenhagen@provo.lol avatar

What the also means: (2/2)

The ruling shows that when there's indication a genocide is taking place, the courts won't unconditionally order an end to the violence, even where they acknowledge there is such indication.

And that while the crime of genocide is an unconditional crime. There are no conditions under which it is legitimate.

This is a failure of law, because it subverts the spirit of the genocide convention.

A precautionary principle should apply here, but it was not used.

msteenhagen,
@msteenhagen@provo.lol avatar

@Marielvd @nrc_nl Gevonden, het is deze uitspraak:

"The Court deems it necessary to emphasize that all parties to the conflict in the Gaza Strip
are bound by international humanitarian law. It is gravely concerned about the fate of the hostages
abducted during the attack in Israel on 7 October 2023 and held since then by Hamas and other armed
groups, and calls for their immediate and unconditional release."

Maar dat is geen rechterlijk bevel of een eis. Dat is slechts een terzijde opmerking.

What the judges have said and noted so far is already historical. No one should after this be able to defend Israel's conduct. No one. This court case should finish, and until that time, the defenders of Israel should back off.

It is high time we start seeing the situation through the appropriate lens: (de)colonialism

Israel is a colonial project, it is a colony of European and American people. The violence we see is colonial violence, and resistance to colonialism.

Yes, it is a colony that has existed for some time, so it’s not straightforward what decolonisation might look like. But there’s no place for colonialism in a just world.

Please, read South Africa’s 84-page application to the International Court of Justice. Even if it’s just a quick glance.

It’s is a detailed, factual account of the at least apparently genocidal violence and torture Israel commits against the civilians of Gaza.

https://www.icj-cij.org/case/192

The court must agree that it’s urgent to investigate this, and demand of Israel to cease fire in the meantime.

There’s no time to lose. Cease fire now!

@White_Bite, on the bird site, talks about the sudden uptick in mycoplasma infections this year. They point to findings that mycoplasma has been isolated in patients who have recovered from COVID. But is this the same mycoplasma? (Mycoplasma mycoides vs Mycoplasma pneumoniae)

msteenhagen,
@msteenhagen@provo.lol avatar

@White_Bite The authors write: "An important finding from our analysis was that all the three bacterial species that are highly abundant in the recovered (B. aphidicola, C. beijerinckii, and E. canis) are opportunistic in nature."

This is a misleading formulation. They mean, I think: "An important finding from our analysis was that three bacterial species that are opportunistic in nature were the three species highly abundant in the recovered (B. aphidicola, C. beijerinckii, and E. canis)."

msteenhagen,
@msteenhagen@provo.lol avatar

@White_Bite I think this is the real take-home message from the paper: "Overall, our observations revealed a discernible alteration in bacterial abundance, with a tendency toward opportunistic or potentially pathogenic bacteria in COVID-19-positive and recovered individuals, juxtaposed with a more pronounced prevalence of commensal microorganisms within the healthy group"

Even without jumping ahead to the steep rise in pneumonia, this finding is really significant.
