In his brilliant presentation on "Living in the Time Loop: Afrofuturism and Paranormal Activity", A.D. Boynton, II made an interesting connection between enslavers affixing iron objects to enslaved Black people during colonial periods and up to recently with Emmett Till, and how iron was traditionally used to banish ghosts and other paranormal beings.

Jamaican Easter Traditions:

In the past, it was traditional to set egg white in a glass cup on Holy Thursday evening. On Good Friday morning, predictions would be made based on the pattern or shape of the egg white. For example, a ship meant travel.

On this day in 1494, the mass murderer and colonizer Christopher Columbus (may he wander the wastelands forever) landed in Jamaica. The Spanish changed the Taรญno name Xaymaca to Jamaica.

A historical inaccuracy is that he exterminated the Taรญno. Their descendants are alive and well in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean and Americas.

Johnny cakes (fried dumplings) were originally called 'Journey cakes' because they were packed as lunches or snacks to sustain enslaved Africans in Jamaica on their long journeys. Now, they're a traditional Jamaican breakfast side dish.

โ€œOh rascal children of Gaza. You who constantly disturbed me with your screams under my window. You who filled every morning with rush and chaos. You who broke my vase and stole the lonely flower on my balcony. Come back, and scream as you want and break all the vases. Steal all the flowers. Come back..Just come back..โ€

Bendito Dรญa de los Muertos!

"In Haitian Vodou culture, November 1-3 is when we celebrate the pantheon of the cemetery, which we call the Gede. Along with the Gede, we celebrate our ancestors, personal blood relatives who have passed. We give offerings of the food and drinks they like... It's a period of honoring and celebrating the connection between the living and the dead."

In one of the Nahua creation myths, โ€œThe giant earth monster Tlaltecuhtli (โ€œEarth Lordโ€), a crocodile-like creature, swam in the sea searching for flesh to eat. The gods turned themselves into serpents, entered the sea, and tore Tlaltecuhtli in half. The upper part of her body became the land, and the lower part was thrown into the sky to become the stars and heavens.โ€ (Michael E. Smith, The Aztecs (Oxford: Blackwell, 1996)

For this weekโ€™s #MythologyMonday theme, Brews and Potions, an excerpt from Marlon Jamesโ€™ The Book of Night Women:

โ€œHomer send her to the man lodging to rob a spoonful of gunpowder. Then Homer send Gorgon up to the hill with no tree and she come back with a cup of dirt from Massa Patrick Wilson grave. Homer mix the two in a glass and fill the glass with rum...

Homer prick Lilith thumb and she wince. Homer stick Lilith thumb in the glass until the potion start to turn red.โ€

For tonightโ€™s Full Moon:

In the late 1800s, Jamaican children would play Moonshine Baby on the night of a full moon. Claude McKay recalled his father telling them that โ€œthe making of these moonshine babies was an old African custom and that different villages used to compete in the making of them.โ€ (โ€œBoyhood in Jamaicaโ€, Phylon (1940-1956), Vol. 14, No. 2 (2nd Qtr., 1953), pp. 134-145)

Olive Senior wrote about this game in her poem โ€œMoonshine Dollyโ€.

โ€œNo writing is wasted. Did you know that sourdough from San Francisco is leavened partly by a bacteria called lactobacillus sanfrancisensis?... Even a failed loaf is not wasted. Likewise, cheese makers wash the dairy floor with whey. Tomato gardeners compost with rotten tomatoes. No writing is wasted: the words you canโ€™t put in your book can wash the floor, live in the soil, lurk around in the air. They will make the next words better.โ€
