I write mostly in Galician, Spanish and English. You can set up Mastodon to filter by language if you don't want to see one or the other (and I think that's pretty neat).

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

I'm finding 4's terrain autotiling system completely unusable.

Basically you cannot rely on it to not make mistakes (putting tiles that don't match next to one another).

It's also ridiculously hard to set up right. For instance I had to create duplicates of some tiles and give Godot two identical versions, one for each kind of terrain.

nirro,

@krazyjakee Yup! There is!

https://github.com/godotengine/godot/issues/64674

It will probably be solved eventually. I'm sending money their way too. I've been wondering if setting up a bounty on this particular GitHub issue would help since I don't have the C++ expertise to do it myself.

Mozilla: does something sketch with firefox

Peanut gallery: oh-ho! I wonder what the firefox evangelists will do now!

Firefox evangelists: continuing to use firefox because it's still orders of magnitude less sketch than chrome and better for the ecosystem to use a non-chrome-derivative, and there isn't any other viable choice

Peanut gallery: ah, well, nevertheless

nirro,

@eniko I'm still amazed that Google is getting away with the Youtube User-Agent-based slow-down.

This idea that X posts are the best training data to get “clear and unbiased insights into breaking news” is probably the funniest thing I’ve heard today.

No better way to get an unbiased view of breaking news than browsing X, that’s what I say 😂

@matt didn't this dude sign a manifesto saying AI would doom us all last month?

I wonder if some form of open Internet would be feasible (without being extremely prone to abuse). It would make truly applications much easier to achieve.

nirro,

Most current P2P systems (that I know of) require you to either provide some form of centralization or to provide a currently active network node for bootstrap.

nirro,

This severely limits the possibilities for truly decentralized systems and of course there's not much interest in changing it.

nirro,

@librecast oh woah, this is incredible!

nirro,

@KatS disclaimer: I might be making lots of wrong assumptions.

What I think we lack is having a multicast address where you can both listen to announcements and announce yourself as a peer to that network.

I've seen some pretty clever approaches for this like IPFS's use of Kademlia but in the end, software using Kademlia comes with either a hardcoded list of potential bootstraping nodes which become a centralized single point of failure or a centralized address to get such a list.

(1/x)

nirro,

@KatS so it's just pushing the problem further away but not actually solving it. This is a good engineering compromise but it kind of feels like the Internet is essentially unhospitable to complete decentralization.

Of course multicast here just stands in for anything that could provide nodes in a network with a meeting point without relying on any single points.

Anyway, I was not aware of the complexities of globally deploying multicast. I like where the @librecast project is going, though. 🙂

There has to be a search engine for Mastodon. Make it opt-in, make it tightly controlled, however you want it, but there needs to be a way to see news from across the network. That mechanism has powered countless social justice protests, grassroots disaster reports, and mutual aid. Equity requires discoverability. It's not optional.

nirro,

@ben isn't that hashtags, though?

Hey #Fediverse! I built this very simple bot to practice #Mandarin #Chinese vocabulary.

@shuohanyu

It currently only outputs #HSK1 words but I'll add more in the near future.

It's Free Software too! Entirely written in TypeScript and licensed under AGPLv3. You can get the whole code from my GitHub.

So... if you're learning Mandarin Chinese, feel free to follow and let me know what you think. :)

Well if it isn't cryptocurrency spam coming from the biggest, open instance on the . 👀

I wonder if this is at all related to challenges with moderating an instance of checks notes 200k active accounts? Or with moderating new accounts on the only instance actively promoted in the official apps? :thinking_rotate:

Thankfully we can always defederate! What's that? It's the biggest instance so there are real concerns about a lot of people losing connections? Whodda thunk it!

nirro,

@rysiek @codesmith @ericdano they will simply disguise spam accounts more effectively. Now they are just following the path of least resistance, which doesn't call for being subtle, because obviously they get away with it.

I think mastodon.social needs to stop accepting more users than they can effectively moderate.

    I've set a cronjob to clear older objects from S3 storage in cascarilla.social but it doesn't seem to be working. I need to review it because it's raising maintenance costs (almost 3x).

    I really wish Mastodon allowed to set an autoexpiration date from the instance configuration, instead of having to rely on the CLI tool for this. 😔
