A bit of nature to help with the flood of news. Heard a loud kerfuffle between Yellow-billed Cuckoos and Carolina Chickadees. Apparently the Cuckoos had tried to drop an egg in the Chickadee nest. Chickadees are small, cute and fierce, so they won the day defending the nest.

One last Musk Thistle photo for the season. We (volunteers) have been ‘asked’ to remove this invasive, noxious weed. It is the primary nectar-producing plant out in the prairie where visitor can easily see all of the bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, … feeding, we have been moving aggravatingly slow. Guess we will have to finish sometime this summer.

Acadian Flycatchers have checked in for the summer. They prefer dense old growth, so are hard to find in the deep shadows once you hear their distinctive song. Got lucky here. Also located a migrating Alder Flycatcher (a rare find).

Black and White Warblers are devilishly difficult to locate and even more difficult to photograph. Their call sounds like a very faint squeaky wheel, and they like areas of dark shadow. Got lucky with this one, but the backlighting made it technically challenging (while standing ankle deep in water)

Once again, madness. SCOTUS seems to be following the script of Project 2025 to the letter, using the tacit assumption that the orange fat bastard has already won the election (regardless of annoying voters on Nov.). If they keep on this attack only white male evangelical christians will be considered human, and only they will have rights. A very dark future indeed if this comes to pass.

Have been searching for Northern Parulas for the past two weeks. Could hear their amazing calls, but never caught a glimpse - until today. This one took pity, came out, yelled at me to 'look-look-over-here', and stayed for several minutes. A rare treat. Their trill song sounds like a miniature vibroseis to me. Tiny birds with a huge voice. One of my favorites.

As the water levels in the Marsh continue to drop, the food (energy) bonanza of the mudflats and shallow water are attracting more Yellowlegs, Sandpipers, Snipes and Ducks. This is a Lesser Yellowlegs. At ~10 inches in length they are smaller than the Greater, and have a very different and distinct call.

Exxon was one of the first to have its researchers verify risks oh GHG. It silenced them, now it wants to silence investors from saying anything about the climate crisis. They are afraid of being held accountable for their role in the climate crisis, and loosing their billions (trillions?) in windfall profits.

Being held accountable panics the industry. They want to keep the massive subsidies, and charge exorbitant, inflated, prices; all the while causing irreparable environmental damage without consequences. To be held accountable, wrecks their profit model.
