So basically if the Chevron Deference is overturned, we become an 1850s country again.

Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, Asbestos, PM2.5 on steroids, Chlorofluorocarbons destroying the Ozone, polluted waters, fungal illnesses, the return of tB and measles.

Overturning Chevron is a worse coup than anyone clearly is currently imagining.

It affirms the end of the post-Gilded Age governance.

It's intended to enslave and kill 300million.

petteriusa,

@hannu_ikonen

In addition to all the above, I'm very concerned about agnecies like the FAA, NTSA, and FRA.

Are we really expected to live in a nation where "anything goes" when it comes to our life and limb unless expressly codified in law? Back to the dark ages we go! Absurd and terrifying.

Sigh...

another missed opportunity from YLE to have actual members of the community discuss these issues. Not a bad discussion, but how long is YLE going to continue to host panels that are not representative of the very community that is being impacted by the discussion at hand?

Yes, no 10-minute-long discussion on a morning talk show is going to solve anything. Yet these are all small building blocks that do add up to construct something meaningful.

petteriusa,

@Loukas

Really pathetic. I'm at a loss for words really. This isn't all that difficult in this day and age to understand at least the basics of how to go about engaging in constructive discussion about these issues. I panelists themselves here know this, it's YLE that is really dropping the ball here.

petteriusa,

@Loukas

It's this tendency I see in almost all major media outlets. To treat the defacto or current state of affairs as almost sacrosanct. It seems that they just fear it's beyond the pale to say outright that as things stand, this is not good.

I see this a lot in American media when discussing the modern GOP. They outright refuse to discuss how the party has just gone off the deep end. There are little to no rational ideas from the Republican party yet they are treated as seriously and with as much deference as possible.

With YLE it's similar, they are framing the discussion as if it were about daycare fees or the like. Not that that's not important but it's not in the same category and to deny that is to deny reality.

Yes. Yes I do.

I do the ol' pocket pat every time I grab my car keys.

ESPECIALLY when I'm leaving on a road trip.

petteriusa,

Agreed. For me, it just boils down to choice. There's no reason that really any common form of payment shouldn't be accepted. In fact, if you really want to be equitable about things. There should be no-fee/low-fee cash-to-card converters anywhere cash payment isn't accepted directly.

At least in a system such as in the USA where access to banking services can be discriminatory or cost prohibitive.

Right now if you search for "country in Africa that starts with the letter K":

  • DuckDuckGo will link to an alphabetical list of countries in Africa which includes Kenya.

  • Google, as the first hit, links to a ChatGPT transcript where it claims that there are none, and summarizes to say the same.

This is because ChatGPT at some point ingested this popular joke:

"There are no countries in Africa that start with K."
"What about Kenya?"
"Kenya suck deez nuts?"

Google Search is over.

She does understand that the former leader of the party was convicted of ethnic agitation right? Right?!!

She and her party have stretched plausible deniability well beyond the breaking point here. The racial attitudes that infest the Finns Party are well documented. Their moral stance is and has been quite clear. The longer Henriksson and her party try to hold on to power-sharing with the Finns Party the more difficult it becomes to see the difference in moral fortitude between them.

Shameful.

🤯 A bridge on the high speed line in Netherlands was built incorrectly, and can only be crossed at 80km/h rather than 300km/h

The track has moved 8 centimeters horizontally since the construction of the high-speed rail line in 2009, the article says…

Geeze, and it sounds like it might even be worse than that. Several viaducts are constructed in a similar manner and nine already derated to 160kph.

It looks like Finland's right/far-right government is safe, since the latest opinion poll suggests there's been zero backlash against the centrist parties, even though their far-right ally has been exposed as proudly racist and linked to fascist sympathies in the last few weeks.

https://www.hs.fi/politiikka/art-2000009702303.html

petteriusa,

@Loukas

Yea, it's distressing to see the numbers not drop meaningfully for the NCP or SPP. That said, it is summer and people's attention and energies are focused elsewhere.

I would think that in the long term, this is unsustainable. The racist attitudes and values are deep-seated in many, many Persut members. Eventually, another scandal will come along. How much embarrassment and shame with the NCP and SPP tolerate?

petteriusa,

@Loukas

I'm trying to stay positive over here! But I do hope that does not happen. A quarter of all voters supporting an openly racist party, or even one that tolerates that sort of ideology is troubling, to say the least.

Do you think studios affected by will be looking to Europe to find actors, writers and content to fill the gap?

Is there some way we can prevent Europeans crossing the picket line on this?

petteriusa,

@GeofCox @Loukas

Agreed, I don't think you'll find many from Europe willing to cross picket lines. I think I've read that anyone who does will be ineligible for union membership in the future. If true that's a fairly big deterrent.

This was the only news story I could find mentioning actors' unions outside the US:

When I am NOT working on railway policy, and would have time to work on ferries, I'd work to make it a legal obligation that every ferry everywhere has to carry foot passengers

The Finland - Germany ferries do allow foot passengers. I did that last summer. I should have asked at the port if this was really in fact the policy but I forgot. I didn't see anyone on foot or bicycle when I went to Åland however.

If you’re reading this toot there’s a pretty high chance you’ve asked yourself ethical questions about your social media use and that’s why you’re here

You’ve likewise probably got concerns about Meta and Threads

But the 90-odd % of your friends you left behind on Facebook, Insta etc. likely don’t have those concerns to the same extent as you

Mastodon has to win on user experience as well as on ethics. We can’t just berate the Meta users

petteriusa,

@jon

Agreed. The bar has been set for what a micro-blogging site should be by Twitter. That is of course now history having been in large part dismantled by Elon.

The apparent stubbornness of the powers that be here to at least trial some of the features that people miss from Twitter is a real missed opportunity.

Somewhat of a catch-22 as to draw the crowd you need the crowd situation as well. I think a great opportunity that's being missed is for news outlets to establish their own instances. I don't know if there's been outreach from the Mastodon side or not, but that seems like a no-brainer.
