Another one of these "good news" headlines

photovotary,

@Radical_EgoCom Yeah, talk about twisting the narrative. I am one of the 80% and I’ve always said I would never retire because it would not be possible—not because I never want to.

Lemme get this straight: we're going to fight the "embrace, extend, and extinguish" bad corporate by storing our protocols and blocking code on a site owned by the corporate that invented EEE?
And all this stuff is kept in a cloud owned by ... oh, shit, another one.
4D chess or sheer numptiness?
Only the Shadow knows.

photovotary,

@OutOnTheMoors Explained this way, it seems pointless. 😑

photovotary,

@OutOnTheMoors I’m glad to hear that. I don’t fully understand the technical issues so your toot made me think Meta was going to take over no matter what individual instances do.

It's too bad about Billy Corgan, though.
He's not dead or anything, he's just an alt-right lunatic.

photovotary,

@Adam_Cadmon1 That sucks.

As you get older different things become priority.

For example, I remember sitting next to my phone, desperate for the DJ to open the phone lines. Nervous anxiety racing through my spine at the thought of talking on air to all the other people on the airwaves.

Now, that same thrill awaits as I refresh Sports Clips website awaiting their opening so I can reserve my haircut.

As a very erudite young lady once said to me, "Fuck! My arse is so sweaty I wish I could cut it off and hang it out of the window."

It's warm and muggy in Cork, and I don't like it.

@abominabledrh 😂 That's when we drink iced tea over here where I live.

nattiegoogie, to Facebook

Even in a fantasy world where isn't explicitly planning to co-opt or destroy the ...

Mastodon barely survived the last , and it's still trying to take in the .

Those were nothing compared to FB.

There are ~12M people on the Fediverse.

What do you think happens when 200M FB users join? When Zuck can impulsively defederate, or add/change/remove features and rules, at will, and oh...10M non-FB users object?

photovotary,

@nattiegoogie Since I’m not a tech person, I find it difficult to understand the danger. I remember it took the Mastodon instances time to adjust to the influx of many new users, but I didn’t think that flex threatened the entire fedi. How does what one mammoth instance does destroy all of the other instances’ ability to control their own features? If I personally block the FB/Meta instance(s), does that not shield me from the danger?

photovotary,

@nattiegoogie Buy since very few people who are already here would join those servers, would it matter if we were blocked by Meta? Wouldn’t we all still exist out here in the fedi anyway? Or is everyone assuming that the majority of people will leave smaller instances to join Meta’s instance? I’m still reading up.

photovotary,

@nattiegoogie Ah! That's the key to the question I was missing! Thank you!

photovotary,

@raptor85 @nattiegoogie Centralization? Do you feel like Meta's arrival will mean that the fediverse is centralized around it because it will be so large?

photovotary,

@raptor85 @nattiegoogie Just to be clear, is that because of the size of Meta? I didn't assume they were just making FB part of the fedi. I thought they were creating an instance and then people could decide to join it. How does defederating from them break my follow list if I don't follow anyone on their instance? If that's too big of an explanation to give, it's OK. I'm not tech savvy enough to understand it if its very complicated.

photovotary,

@raptor85 Thanks for the explanation.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Yes. However that wouldn’t make the laws invalid in the US. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 has been a means of protecting students from forms of discrimination based on gender. But it is not clear that it protects transgender students. If transgender students are deemed to be a protected class, then likely these laws will be repealed or invalidated by a court of law. We’re not there yet.

    photovotary,

@GhostOnTheHalfShell I think maybe you are thinking bills of attainder that were used bypass a person’s rights and deem them to have committed a crime without a trial. But I can do some research when I get a chance about Nixon.

More than a decade with a , strictly on medical formula, and I barely get cravings for old food anymore but today I have a hankering for iron skillet shortening cornbread, pinto beans with thick slices of onion, chow chow (like a cabbage relish) and fried potatoes with a stiff, strong cup of black coffee.

I used to eat that 4 or five times a week. We always had an ole fashion pot of pinto soup beans and a pan of cornbread in the house.

Camponotus is a big bloated genus of ants. So many species and so much diversity! But, they all have the distinctive “humpback” and most are what we call “carpenter ants” larger, often black ants who don’t sting but are still very bold!

So I was not shocked when I saw chartifex, the ants with the primitive silk nest weaving, listed as both Camponotus chartifex and as Dendromyrmex chartifex— I thought someone had split the genus— not so! Dendromyrmex is something called a “sub genus” 1/
