๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฉ The UN warns of a catastrophic situation in Sudan's el-Fasher as violence escalates, with 1.8 million civilians at risk of famine. Despite urgent appeals, humanitarian aid remains critically underfunded, with only 12% of the $2.7bn needed raised so far.

At least Malaysia is open about the discrimination (and easier to protest/argue against).

In my (public) uni there used to be unofficial quota for Chinese students. It was hard to prove but it was there.

After the end of the New Order regime Chinese students are more numerous. For some of them it is the first experience attending public school ๐Ÿ™ƒ

So there's an award-winning film named Snow In Midsummer that's widely discussed in Taiwan and elsewhere at the moment, it's about Malaysia's 13th May racial riots, an event that my mom experienced firsthand and which is only discussed in hushed tones. Not sure if it'll ever be aired in Malaysia.

@rakyat ahh, i'd love to watch this. my father was right in the heart of the race riots... and he was quite reticent about it. I only knew that they had to stretch the rice, can't open windows for fear of being shot and that's all I knew... other than "don't talk about race" and definitely stock piling food during elections.

LA food diary.

Some of you know Iโ€™m a big fan of LA food. I think that dollar for dollar you get a tremendous amount of cuisines, varieties of foods, in this melting pot which feels to me like it has far more immigrant and working class food than the Bay Area. Even the density and quality of โ€˜fancy foodโ€™ is high!

Iโ€™m keeping a record of my LA 2024 discoveries.

  1. Borneo Kalimantan (Borneo Eatery on Google maps), Alhambra.

A restaurant I must visit when Iโ€™m here. It is, by far, the best Indonesian / Malaysian / Singaporean food Iโ€™ve had anywhere in California (I keep trying, and I keep being disappointed, but this place never disappoints).

A photo of char kway teow

(Why do I say Indonesian / Malaysian / Singaporean? Arenโ€™t those different countries? Yes, but.. where to start

This place in particular is run by Chinese diaspora folks from Kalimantan (Borneo). Who tend to be Teochew or Foochow or Hakka. So this means their food is.. almost exactly the same as Chinese food in Malaysia and Singapore. With some national influences here and there (toppings, condiments). Functionally the same food)

I have a half baked idea of how LA/SF for me is like my relationship with KL/SG. LA reminds me a lot of KL / Klang Valley with how itโ€™s laid out. Getting to explore it brings me as much joy as exploring KL/PJ did. (Even the car-centrism and infra and buildings and food scene comparisons feel samey to me)

Getting to explore LA / KL and leave my smaller more annoying city (SF / SG) sometimes is also a fun parallel. :)
