"AVG: Thank you for selecting AVG Free"

(Yes, I don't trust Windows without some anti-virus.. it's still Windows :windows: )

Edit: Completely removed AVG now since many people say Windows Defender is good enough ✅ The less running in the background the better

schmitzel76,
@schmitzel76@mstdn.social avatar

@stux installing privacy violating malware as protection is not a good idea. Avast / AVG should be avoided; you are better off just using the built-in Windows defender and some common sense.

I'm sure a future where "workers push the buttons we give them, and only we know how they work" is good for incumbents and "button making companies."

But it's not something we should celebrate as progress!

Also v rich given Nvidia's success is in part attributable to having tons of low-level programmers mid-2000s--ppl who understand the mechanisms abstracted away for most--and were thus able to focus on creating the CUDA ecosystem way ahead of competitors. ANYWAY...

https://vulcanpost.com/853029/dont-learn-to-code-jensen-huang-on-career/

schmitzel76,
@schmitzel76@mstdn.social avatar

@Mer__edith this is indeed all about creating dependance. If you only know how to use their tools to get your job done, you you cannot do your job without them. Making you fully dependant on NVIDIA.

This is one thing I also hate about all those no-code "solutions". There is always code involved, but it is no longer under your control.

A former Gizmodo writer changed his name to ‘Slackbot’ and stayed undetected for months

Hiding on Slack isn’t all that hard, apparently; you just have to pretend you’re a bot. That’s what IT Brew’s Tom McKay did when he left Gizmodo in 2022, and he went undetected by the site’s management for months.

I am so sorry for everyone on the Fediverse who has to deal with the enormous amount of spam the past few days♥️

Most admins and mods are trying to deal with it as fast as possible but the issue is that the spam comes from so many smaller instances that we simple need to limit the instances or ban individual spam accounts otherwise they would lose all connections on a full ban.. that’s not what we want

We are working hard on the issue! :blobfoxdetective:

Het zou zomaar kunnen gebeuren dat ze dat recht hierdoor kwijt gaan raken.

I wouldn't use any of those terms for the dutch public transport, especially when get outside of one of the big cities.

schmitzel76,
@schmitzel76@mstdn.social avatar

@stux it can be a lot worse, but also a lot better. I have been living my entire life along the west coast, enclosed by Den Haag, Rotterdam and Delft. With those cities nearby, you would expect acceptable public transport. But you definately need to have a car to get anywhere. Sometimes it is even faster to go by bike than by public transport.

@cigitalgem and this is yet another example that you should filter the data going into the model, instead of what is coming out of it. If the data simply isn't there, you can't retrieve it.

Edit (check my profile for more up-to-date info)

If you are still a CuriosityStream subscriber, be aware that they are currently mass-emailing subscribers with what I think is a VERY deceptive "offer". They push users to renew 2yr subs, promising continued Nebula access for bundle subscribers. In reality, Nebula access for CS subscribers expires on Dec 31st. This means you'll have <2 months of Nebula out of your "locked in" 2 year contract. All their communication seems to imply the opposite.

schmitzel76,
@schmitzel76@mstdn.social avatar

@Techaltar I had the bundle before, but hardly watched anything on Curiosity Stream, so this summer I became a direct subscriber to Nebula and canceled CS. Apparently that was the right choice.

When you download and install a new app on your phone or tablet and it asks for certain permissions to use for example your location or access to contacts or photos, first ask yourself: "what could this function be of use to this app?" If you can't find a good reason just "don't allow" it

If the app does not work without that certain permission you can always change it later

Better to be safe and don't overshare data 😉

schmitzel76,
@schmitzel76@mstdn.social avatar

@qkslvrwolf @stux that reason is Google's weird logic with Android permissions. An app requires location permission to scan for Bluetooth devices because google decided that, just like with cell towers and wifi access points, Bluetooth can be used to pinpoint your location. Without that permission you cannot scan for these devices.

It is logical that users are wary about apps having this permission, and also hard to explain by app developers why this permission is really needed

My latest video is now available on Nebula!

About a year ago I agreed to go out to small town about 50 km from Amsterdam on a regular basis.

Of course, since this is the Netherlands, I was able to easily get there by train.

But what I didn't expect is that the train station was the nicest small train station I've ever seen! 😳

I suppose it's not rocket surgery to figure out which is the real me here. How/should one report these kinds of things for investigation? I never much cared on Twitter about imposters because reporting them never did anything. These are all using my Twitter photo for profile pics.

schmitzel76,
@schmitzel76@mstdn.social avatar

@briankrebs all twitter bots, of which I heard more people complaining.

But i wonder how these bots can repost anything from twitter without access to an API. Or do they use web scraping?

But the only way to report those is to the admins of those instances, if they at least want to cooperate.

What are the top DAY JOBS of Russian cybercriminals? Okay, this is unscientific for sure, but having spent ridiculous amounts of time tracking down so many cybercriminals who also turn out to be Russian, here's what I see over and over (not necessarily in any order):

  1. Web designer
  2. Web hoster
  3. Nature tour company operator
  4. Computer hardware sales
  5. Disk jockey/deejay (weirdly common)
  6. Physical security services/goods
  7. Programmer
  8. Photographer/Videographer
  9. Travel consultant
  10. Real estate broker

Most of these professions offer opportunities for a mobile and less regimented lifestyle, as well as a lot of wiggle room for how much taxable "income" they make.

schmitzel76,

@briankrebs @AlicornSkyler you probably mean alchemy, not metallurgy. The first is trying to turn everything into gold, the second one just normal metal works.
