Aw man, I'm bummed that I seem to have discovered a "jumping worm" or "crazy worm" crawling out of my yard. They're very damaging to forest ecosystems, even worse than the previously introduced European earthworms: https://gridphilly.com/blog-home/2024/04/01/invasive-earthworms-threaten-forests-and-gardens-and-mitigation-has-proven-difficult/

I was planning to remove my non-native bushes from my yard and give them to a neighbor this weekend, but now I have to question doing that if it's possible that would help the #invasive #worms spread.

Learning that many common introduced weeds are edible (and indeed many were intentionally imported by our ancestors as food) has been fatal to my ability to weed. Now I want to eat all the weeds, but I don't know how, but it feels wasteful to just throw them away, so I want to leave them alone until I can figure out how to eat them...

I'm just glaring at this mugwort, thinking about how I've never eaten mugwort, and I don't know of any friends or family who eat mugwort.

What would the US do if it simply didn't have gobs of weapons to send everywhere in the world?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@ntnsndr We'd find something worse to spread around the world, like leaded gasoline, except worse than that, because our ability to make fucked up tech has increased, while our commitment to even appearing to care about ethics has decreased.

Ok @skyfaller @stumblewyk where are we on my shitty idea:

Assembly language but for RPG magic systems.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@stumblewyk @yonkeltron What this has made me think about is how to make an exploitable spell, like the xz backdoor. If you have a spell written in a complex and arcane language, like C or assembly, and it's widely adopted without people fully understanding its workings, side effects, or interactions with other spells... what could a patient wizard achieve?

Imagine some custom spells for your campaign that seem OP, until the reveal when your players' spells betray them.

Ok #foragers, I tried collecting #invasive garlic mustard / Alliaria petiolata on my walk thru the woods yesterday. (Next time I need to bring a bag to make sure no seeds fall off the plants I picked.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliaria_petiolata

But apparently the leaves contain hydrogen #cyanide gas?! Wikipedia cites a source that says "the cyanide is easily sidestepped by chopping up the plant, which releases most of the gas in a few minutes. Soaking and cooking it also reduces the cyanide to negligible levels".

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

Does anyone have good sources for learning how to eat #GarlicMustard safely? (Or for #foraging safely in general?) I'm just mildly alarmed because the first websites I looked at discussing eating garlic mustard did not mention cyanide or safety at all.

How well chopped does the plant need to be? How long must it sit before eating? How important is ventilation in the room, if you're releasing a toxic gas? What soaking and/or cooking procedures are required to make it safe?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@yonkeltron Letting the violence of the Israeli state slide is also troubling.

Also, specifically which violence from protesters are you referring to? Are you referring to the police violence against the protesters?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@yonkeltron Many Jewish sources do not agree with your assessment of the antisemitism of the protests, or the lack of peaceful intent. (Also many non-Jewish sources.) Here's one trending link: https://www.commondreams.org/news/holocaust-survivors-gaza-genocide

If you don't think these Jewish voices count, could you consider that anti-Semitic protestors may also be unrepresentative?

It's undeniable that there has been some anti-Semitism, but broadly depicting US protests as anti-Semitic or violent seems inaccurate.

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@molly0xfff Top thing I miss is instant messaging. Specifically, I miss the culture of being "away" or "available": I miss seeing someone online I haven't talked with in a while, and striking up a conversation. Without that signal that someone is around and actually interested in talking, it's a lot harder to feel up to messaging someone.

Also modern text conversations tend to drawn-out asynchronous affairs, while IMs tended to be more present in the moment, IMHO.

RIP Google Talk, 2013.

Trump has proposed a 10% tariff on all imported goods and a 60% or more tariff on Chinese imports.

No matter what he says, tariffs aren't paid by the other country. They're paid by you.

Recent analysis predicts his plan would cost the average family about $1,500 extra per year.

@tmstreet Simply raising prices is a regressive way to attempt to get people to buy less stuff. While raising prices (e.g. congestion charges) may be a necessary part of limiting harmful behaviors in our economic system, doing only that and tying it to degrowth will make degrowth very unpopular very quickly. Counterproductive.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@tmstreet You just connected it to degrowth by using the hashtag. While I agree that you are not important or influential, this is still not good messaging, and I would like to discourage it before someone with more clout repeats what you're saying.

I believe this bold jumping spider made a hideout in my portable solar panel while it was folded up. Is this just their bed where they were sleeping, or did they put eggs here that will hatch? In other words, can I safely clean this construction off now that the spider is out and about, or does my solar panel need to live outside now so baby won't take over my house?

A webby pouch attached to the cloth of my little Anker solar panel. It looks like it opened one side so it could leave.

Suppose you had to produce a local computer from scratch, completely independent from existing manufacturers like Intel. (If you need a specific location for this hypothetical, let's say Greater Philadelphia.) No chip fabs in China, Taiwan etc. The tech level and computing power doesn't matter, you can tailor the application to the power of the computer; indie local production is top priority.

What is the best approach? A simple conventional silicon chip? Vacuum tubes? Analog? Mechanical?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@mjgardner So are you recommending bringing back human computers? Or are you suggesting a machine writing on paper with pencils, and then something like Scantron to read it?

I genuinely think human computers are a good idea in a few situations, like I think people should be able to use abacuses and slide rules when practical. Perhaps there are novel approaches to human computing that haven't been adequately explored that could expand practical applications.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@yonkeltron This is a really cool solarpunk vision! I had forgotten about the concept of biocomputing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_computing

It feels like the trick is finding an application that plays to biocomputing strengths, while minimizing its downsides. Perhaps something related to chemical reactions? I don't know enough to speculate.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@Bender Ok, this is genuinely cool, but what can we use it for besides teaching children (or adults) how computers work? I don't care how frivolous the application is, but what actual task could a marble computer complete in a way that is at least marginally better than a human doing it manually?

I guess we need a way for it to trigger actions in the real world, like maybe a physical switch that gets flipped by a marble hitting it (or enough marbles piling up to tip it over).

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@steve Decades sounds like too much time; you might be able to build a conventional RISC-V plant by then, for all I know. Let's say you have five (5) years warning to get things rolling before you have to start producing weird local computers. A time traveler tips you off. ("Why didn't you warn me sooner?" "Do you know how to work this time machine? Neither do I, I just hit the Back button.")

You have enough resources to make something interesting, but not enough to replicate the status quo.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@liaizon I suggested we recycle what we need from local sources, but people pointed out that if we're using existing tech, we can just salvage old computers instead of building new ones out of recycling. And truly that's great as far as it goes, but I want to build and maintain a local supply chain for making new computers. I still feel like a circular economy should be important to the thought experiment tho.

Building a modern computer is not my priority, that's why I mentioned retro methods.

Did you know that the City Repair Project that was started in Portland, OR has spread across the country?

It has spread to cities like LA, Cleveland, and this one in @phillycityrepairproject

All it takes is a small group of concerned citizens who want to make a difference.

Do you have a City Repair Project happening in your town?
