We're back to my recurring nightmare of making it easy for a non-technical client to edit a static website generated using .

Are there any good solutions? Or am I going to end up writing my own solution after many painful hours with other people's janky solutions?

If you know of a non-technical user successfully editing a static website, how are they doing it?

EDIT: I'll only use open source solutions I can self-host, but happy to hear about proprietary options.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@cschrader Yeah Decap CMS does not require Netlify, but it does feel like assumptions around something Netlify-shaped are baked into the design, which is a potential problem if hosting is part of my business. I don't have or want a "global CDN".

This is one of the janky-looking solutions I'm evaluating ;-)

@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@bigethan Thank you for the recommendation, I had heard of Astro but didn't realize it generates static sites by default. (Perhaps because it also has dynamic modes) https://docs.astro.build/en/basics/rendering-modes/

How long does Astro take to build your website? I committed to Hugo a while back after suffering through tools like Gatsby that took eons to render websites. I've never really noticed incremental builds on Hugo, and even rebuilding everything from scratch doesn't keep me waiting very long.

I seem to have adopted an intern at my dysfunctional web business.

The intern is in high school, knows basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and has a little experience using Ruby and other programming languages. However they have never used git, for example, and presumably lack experience with similar essential tools.

How would you help a beginner programmer get started, with a focus on technologies relevant to the web and web infrastructure?

I already recommended they play https://ohmygit.org/

Shell has sold millions of ‘phantom’ carbon credits based on emissions savings that never happened, according to a new investigation.

Shell made more than $200 million dollars selling the credits from its flagship carbon capture facility called 'Quest'.

Canadian taxpayers covered 93% of the costs of building the 'Quest' carbon capture project.

OK, which semi-urgent task should I prioritize once I get some breathing space?

Plants should be planted before it gets too hot, block parties can't be planned until we confirm dates with the city, and my band needs to start work on pressing our record if we're going to have it ready by our planned release date.

I asked protestors at the UPenn camp how non-Penn people can best help, and they said their top need right now is more people attending rallies.

They said the best way to stay up to date on when rallies are occurring is to follow relevant accounts on Instagram, or to check this whiteboard at the camp.

A rally is happening tonight at 7:30pm. (Edit: that was Monday, May 6)

At my in-laws’ house getting started on the long process of clearing it out. Found this gem from 1998 being used as a monitor stand. It’s about 2.5” (65mm) thick and holds dozens of literal bookmarks. #Relic #SoDusty

Side view to give some sense of scale to just how thick the book is.
Dozens of bookmarks visible along the top edge.

@CaptainFlab Given the self-destruction of search engines, maybe it's time for a printed Internet Yellow Pages comeback. Perhaps with QR codes?

On a small scale, you could make 3-ring binders with local websites and put them in public spaces like coffee shops, so you can easily add or remove pages as websites come and go.

@berz Jar Jar Binks should have singlehandedly killed the franchise, but I'm glad that better art has been produced in the Star Wars Universe since then for people to enjoy.

I'm not sure I agree it's the worst movie, though. Since none of the events of Episode I seem to affect the later movies at all, you can safely ignore it.

Episode II had canonical effects, and it still had Jar Jar Binks. Personally, I was game to see another prequel after watching 1, but after 2 I refused to see III.

A perennial viral complaint I've seen on FB, reddit, etc., for ~5 years is parents saying that kids the same age as their own kids have weird/ridiculous/bad names.

The comments of these posts are full of people saying things like "don't these parents realize how stupid these names are? Not like my kid, who has a normal name like Gary". But if the complaint is that almost all kids in the class have a "weird" name, aren't these "weird" names going to be normal for the kid and the kid's peers?

List of allegedly ridiculous names: Ellanora Silas Ethel Emmanuel Karsonn Sarah Vecepia Alexandriana Andrea Greysin Adelainia Edwardu Serbia Lucas Ezra Silas

@danluu Are you saying that the people who can afford McMansions are less powerful than the author or average reader of McMansion Hell, on Tumblr etc.? This seems like a bold claim. I'm pretty sure that McMansion Hell is punching up at very rich people.

I hired a landscape designer and he delivered this #LandscapeDesign. It looks good, but somehow communication broke down and they included a lot of non-native plants when I thought I was clear I wanted native plants. If they include obvious introduced plants, how can I trust they'll source plants that meet my less visible criteria, like straight species / open pollinated & local ecotype? So I guess I have to modify and implement it myself, based on what native plants I can source.

Any feedback?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@meganL Yeah I did say my dream was a permaculture forest, but (a) I was explicit that serving the wildlife was top priority, food for myself was second, and (b) I talked at great length about my ideas for native edibles, including ordering seeds for native edibles from the Experimental Farm Network. Like, good luck stopping me once I start info dumping. It felt like they must have tuned me out at some point.

Thank you for mentioning researching plant needs/synergies! Any sources you'd suggest?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@nancywisser Currently planning to get hollow Joe Pye, since that's what my supplier has available at the moment: https://www.goodhostplants.com/plant-availability/

Planning to buy one of every perennial he has. For shrubs I'm planning to get Aronia melanocarpa var. depressa, Vaccinium corymbosum, Rubus occidentalis. I might use Cornus sericea for my yard tree, but I'm not sure how tree-like it is.

By native I mean native to eastern half of North America, and by local ecotype I mean as specific to Philly as possible.

Clean water is such a fundamental human right, that if I didn't trust drinking the water that comes out of my faucet I would be rioting in the streets.

So when people say "ew you drink tap water? Just buy a britta!" I fundamentally don't understand where they're coming from.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@wavdl I'm not beholden to Brita! I have both a Brita filter and a LifeStraw filter, so I have an alternate supplier lined up :-P

I like pitcher filters bringing the water up to room temperature (important in the winter when the tap is very cold), or bringing it down to fridge temperature if I put it in the fridge in the summer.

Also if the water supply were to suddenly cut out, I'd have at least a couple drinks of water ready in the pitchers. (I don't trust any of our infrastructure, frankly)

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@wavdl Yeah filters may not be necessary, haven't tested the water. And they definitely shouldn't be necessary, I agree with your point that we need to make sure our infrastructure is trustworthy, invest in it and maintain it properly.

Mainly I maintain the filters so that nobody asks for bottled water, which is a true scourge on our planet.

@evan The USA is pretty directly responsible for their predicament, we better do whatever we can to help those whom our foreign policy has made homeless.

skyfaller,

@evan I mean, there seems to be parallels with Vietnam, where we accepted a lot of Vietnamese immigrants displaced by our foreign policy (also Afghanistan?).

I don't know that I'd want to immigrate to a country bearing responsibility for destroying my home, but I think we're obligated to accept them if they do.

Ok #foragers, I tried collecting #invasive garlic mustard / Alliaria petiolata on my walk thru the woods yesterday. (Next time I need to bring a bag to make sure no seeds fall off the plants I picked.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliaria_petiolata

But apparently the leaves contain hydrogen #cyanide gas?! Wikipedia cites a source that says "the cyanide is easily sidestepped by chopping up the plant, which releases most of the gas in a few minutes. Soaking and cooking it also reduces the cyanide to negligible levels".

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@bendystraw I mean a lot of common foods have cyanide in them, like peach pits. (Well in that case they contain cyanogenic glycosides, but same difference.) The question is how much cyanide, where is it, and how do you avoid it or get rid of it? (Eat the peach flesh, never the pit.)

A lot of people seem dismissive of the cyanide content of garlic mustard, because related plants that we eat frequently also have some cyanide, but it seems garlic mustard may have more cyanide and rate more caution

I've been biking them for 2 years and just learned a new word -- and a new program. H/T @modacitylife

Doorfietsroutes, thru bike paths, are smoothly aligned regional connectors between cities. Fun for tourists. Essential for adaptation.

Regional requires incredibly hard political and engineering cooperation.

Province already has 150km (93m) of a planned 1500km system. built 146km just in 2023.

skyfaller,

@CathyTuttle I'm reminded of how apparently when the Chinese road network deteriorated due to imperial collapse, narrow paved trails that took far less resources to maintain were able to keep civilization running. This worked in part because of Chinese wheelbarrow designs: https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2011/12/how-to-downsize-a-transport-network-the-chinese-wheelbarrow/

And later those narrow paths were used by bicycles!
