Just because I am taking a day off today, and am waiting to watch the Space Station cross the sun, here's a comparison between radiation levels you get when flying on an ATR 72 and an A320 Airbus.

tcnicholls,
@tcnicholls@mastodon.nz avatar

@iangriffin Is the relationship between radiation level and altitude a simple linear one?

NZ has some established institutions which have made the life of New Zealanders immeasurably better over the years; two of these are ACC and Pharmac. It's clear from statements made by by Clux and his mates that he sees no value in these operations other than as assets which can be sold off to Big Insurance and Big Pharma.

This is always what he meant by saying that NZ is now "open for business".

Please no. We have enough compounded nightmare scenarios already.

Biden wants an official enquiry into Israel's murder of WCK relief workers? Fine. Following the UNRWA precedent, he should immediately defund Israel until the enquiry concludes and should only restore funding if they are completely exonerated.
Fair's fair, after all.

The Clean Car Scheme was the only new policy in recent decades that has a net benefit to NZ and no tax or spending changes on the government

Just one of a boat load of regressive 1950s thinking policy form our new gov

And we've also cancelled the boats.

This is not the new normal.
The new normal will be what the world is like when TWO THIRDS of the workforce, and virtually ALL of the public-facing workforce that keeps society functional, have Long Covid. Like that idea?

This is not the new normal.
The new normal will be what the world is like TWENTY YEARS AFTER we have stopped burning carbon fuels. Like that idea?

I finally found time to read Douglas Hofstadter's blisteringly critical essay on large language models. As usual, he makes excellent points, and supports them with precise and well thought out arguments.

It is, then, merely a wonderful bonus that the essay is centered around Hofstadter critiquing an AI which is in turn pretending to be Hofstadter writing about GEB. There are at least two interwoven levels of self-reference here. Bravo!

@isomeme I don't wish to subscribe to the Atlantic, unfortunately. Pity, I have the book and many other of Douglas' writings and would appreciate seeing what he has to say.

Almost all political parties in NZ talk of the need to grow the economy before addressing the costs of climate change.
It's idiocy; the more you grow the economy today, the bigger and faster the catastrophe economy will grow tomorrow.

So planned roadworks in the ‘burb are upsetting all the frightfully important parents who have to deposit their children at school in the morning. Their lives are “fine tuned” for the tight home-school-work schedule in the expectation that the private car is the only option.

Those expectations are neither reasonable nor sustainable.

“Some people need a car” always translates into an excuse for using a car when it’s a luxury not a necessity.

Quote of the day (from @pluralistic )

"We’re in the polycrisis, a widening gyre of climate emergency, inequality, infrastructure neglect, rising authoritarianism and zoonotic plagues.
But that’s not the bad part."

So what is the bad part?

THE BAD PART IS THAT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN A POSITION TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT ARE ALL TELLING YOU THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN.

I just watched the first episode of Orphan Black on TVNZ+. They dropped the full 5 season 50 episodes at midday today.

My advice to you is don't bother. I felt like I was watching something meant for kids even if the subject matter isn't for kids.

@bananabob I thought it started brilliantly but went downhill as they tried to "keep the franchise going".

Last night at around 9:30pm, aurora chasers across the Otago Peninsula (who weren't blinded by the constant flow of traffic with full beam headlights) got to see a beautiful pinky white beam running across the sky from east to west. This is STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement) which isn't actually an aurora at all. It is an atmospheric ribbon of hot gas some 450km above the surface of the earth.

Welcome to the Peninsula STEVE! :-)
