Seeing lots of discussion around Firefox marketshare, would be interested to hear what features / functionality people thought Firefox could implement that would make a big impact?

@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@dangoodin
I'll take a look at those later, thanks. But I don't get the argument about password managers. The police can't force me to hand over the encryption keys nor are the encrypted (and hopefully synced/backed up) passwords at risk if stolen. A passkey only protectd by biometrics or a weak pin seems to be.

(I agree with the phishing argument though seeing as most can't be bothered with proper 2fa :S)

Due to losing control of our Matrix channel, we are officially moving over to Discord for now.

It's a shame, but we can't properly moderate our Matrix, so we can no longer recommend it.

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@cliffwade Also this topic is something that needs to be discussed before it actually happens, because once they do it it will be too late as they already have all the data. So we need to either stop them from doing it or stop giving them data... ignoring it until it's too late just because it's not already happening right now is just naive. We've seen this pattern plenty of times with companies propped up by venture capital. They need to turn a profit elentually no matter how.

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@cliffwade I am not sure they will, I am saying it's a possibility as lots of other companies offering services without any business model just with venture capital have gone that path once they needed to be profitable. And that we need do stop it from happening do Discord or if we can't do that stop people from feeding it more data.

The only fact in my statements is that other companies already went that route and it's not unrealistic to assume the same could happen.

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@cliffwade Please explain their business model to me then and provide info on how they are profitable. Because right now they are deploying functions to use their user base as advertisement among their friend-groups (their new game streaming bounty system) which is basically already selling their user data (just not directly of course, but that doesn't matter. They are making profit by changing user behaviour instead of selling anything)

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@cliffwade @pixelfed @stemy @Mrfunkedude
Oh and that completely ignores that their whole company is running at a loss and they still have not managed to find a strategy to finance the service... meaning that in the end they will have to sell user data (if they don't already).

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@cliffwade @pixelfed @stemy @Mrfunkedude
Discord is a company that not only has a (shoddy) centralized service but also violates its users privacy (e.g. they extracted system usage data in the past even with options for that turned off) additionally to the obvious issues with being proprietary. They literally offer nothing of value beyond "ease of use" (if you only use their service (if you are fine with their limited feature set (if you are fine with their bugs)))

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@cliffwade Again: Why are you sure in that believe that they will never sell data? Your are stating speculations as fact as if the future is already written.

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@cliffwade Where did I say that they are actually selling user data? Please don't make stuff up just because it fits your point. I am clearly talking about their prospect of doing so if they don't find a way of generating profit in a different way. Which their trajectory is currently looking like imo. If you don't think that it looks like it then that's fine and I'm interested in why you think that. This is a discussion about the theoretical future of Discord after all.

Ap"I let everoyne access iCloud content"ple is winning the poll? How weird. The only reason they seem "trustworthy" is their marketing and that they prevent researchers from testing their shit properly because they would have to first buy hardware from them.

I reluctantly answered Google because they are the only ones on that list that didn't have major leaks/hacks. (At least how far as I'm aware off)

Weird that we can't explain a few kubic meters heavy radioactive waste from the NL each year but somehow we can justify pumping our Atmosphere full with toxics each day with our burning engines

"Oehhh all things radioactive are soo scary, we can't setup our grandkids with that" is what they say

But apparently they are totally fine with ruining the climate and expel toxic next where you breath

Until we have something better like fusion we should stick with fission also, but what do I know!🤷

Now that Bitcoin ETFs have been approved, let's recap the colossal waste of resources in BTC mining over the past year.

During 2023, Bitcoin's proof-of-useless-work mechanism consumed almost as much electricity as the entire traditional financial sector combined.

The yearly electricity consumption of Bitcoin mining amounted to 121 TWh according to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index https://ccaf.io/cbnsi/cbeci

maxim, to gamedev
@maxim@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Hello friend game developers

In English it is Dash

Help me translate the game term into German, when a character makes a tackle or dash, how would it be in German? I can't find examples like this in other games

I found two suitable words while traveling for a long time in dictionaries: schleudern and forthinaufstürzen

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

@maxim Really depends on what exactly you mean by that tbh.
If by "tackle" you mean actually grabbing someone then I would say "anpacken" or just "angreifen" (as in "attacking") Main issue here is that it's a term based on American Football so often just used as "tackle" by Germans too. I wouldn't think of "schleudern" for "tackle" tbh. as that's more "throwing" something than actually grabbing someone.
If you mean just as a general bumping maybe "stoßen"?

As for "dash": I would use "flitzen"

schenklklopfer, to Java German

Was macht man um eine Anwendung schneller zu bekommen?

Richtig, man wirft mehr RAM drauf.

Ist Java wirklich so eine schrott Software, oder einfach nur die meisten Entwickler ungfähig?

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar

the_moep,
@the_moep@social.tchncs.de avatar
