"But I can tell you: live those dreams, play with them, build altars to them. It is not yet the ideal but it points in the right direction. Whether you and I and a few others will renew the world someday remains to be seen. But within ourselves we must renew it each day, otherwise we just aren't serious ... You aren't allowed to be afraid of anything, you can't consider prohibited anything that the soul desires."

I freaking hate politics right now. There is no place for views that aren't hard-left or hard-right. There is no desire for dialog. Most people in reality are not perfect ideological stereotypes. But in spite of that, I see more and more of my online acquaintances falling into line with these sterotypes. Being part of the left leaning FOSS community, usually this means presenting as far left revolutionaries. It is resulting in the split of communities and ejection of good faith participants.

theheck,
@theheck@fosstodon.org avatar

@soller @DrRac27 @squeakypancakes I don't think you can talk much about conservatism without acknowledging its core belief in natural social hierarchies. I don't think authoritarianism is inherently an expression of ideology as much as a means of social control. It's not necessarily right wing, but authoritarianism is a convenient way to police racial/gender/etc hierarchy rules and suppress access to knowledge and community support.

Wish filtering in Mastodon could also be done by handle (to wildcard mute servers without block them, while still seeing posts from people you follow)

theheck,
@theheck@fosstodon.org avatar

@thomasfuchs @gsuberland Blocking servers from your user account basically acts like a server-wide mute, and lets you see accounts, although it might unfollow them (I'm not sure). I think they should just call it a mute.

@jerry I can't find it but I saw a post mentioning that Mastodon was changing how it counted active users recently.

Y'all... I don't know shit about gardening or hydroponics....

...that's why I post up the shit I do with gardening and hydroponics. If its working for me, holy crap. It's not supposed to. Maybe it'll work even better for you.

I just tinker around with stuff and fail and fail and fail and fail and that was kinda cool and fail and fail and fail and fail.

    It’s crazy that, of the two leading US presidential candidates, the guy found liable for rape who is facing 91 criminal indictments after he incited an insurrection isn’t the one who is facing vocal calls to step aside for someone else to run. People have lost their minds.

    macOS has the WEIRDEST input bugs ever.

    sometimes typing on the keyboard will do nothing. no, nothing is focused. you can't cmd-tab either. clicking places doesn't fix it.. until it's fixed.

    just now, I pressed "Cmd+A Cmd+X" to cut all of an input field and it left the last 8 letters of the field behind???? bro what?

    theheck,

    @fasterthanlime I've had a lot of problems copying and pasting between different programs, where the other program will still have a previous piece of text in the clipboard.

    "When you study the Holocaust on an academic level, you learn two things: First, yes, however bad you thought the Nazis were, they were worse. And second, they were totally average, ordinary people. The second point is key. It's why historians are warning us now about Republicans."

    And I think that today's Nazis in the USA and UK are further to the right than Hitler was at this stage of his rise. The Germans didn't just march in and start gassing Jews on Day 1.

    theheck,
    @theheck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @kierkegaank @juglugs Yeah, white supremacy has always been a con man's trick. Lyndon B. Johnson said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

    @vwbusguy You've already been able to search your own posts or ones you've "interacted with". You might not see much usefulness until the change is added to a lot more servers and people enable the option. I'm excited they're finally adding that feature.

    Full text search has been merged in main branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉

    It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time.

    We plan to deploy it to mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the coming days to have a bit more feedback on it and see how it behaves in the wild.

    The police shot a 63 year old man while trying to evict him from his home. The elderly man had been taken in by "sovereign citizen" conspiracy theories much to his son's frustration.

    These theories made him more vulnerable to police violence. He also may not have been mentally well.

    The house he was evicted from used to belong to his brother, but a corporation recently bought it for $25,000, then evicted him.

    This story is a nexus of senselessness.

    I think the most interesting thing about Threads will be seeing if they manage to responsibly become part of the fediverse. Will they moderate content from every random server? Will they defederate whole problematic servers? Threads already has more users by itself than the rest of the fediverse combined.

    theheck,
    @theheck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @seldo What's on those problematic servers that's that much worse than what Facebook allows now? I'm not trying to be hyperbolic. On Facebook, you're more walled off from the worst parts because it's meant for irl friends and family, so it might not seem that bad. But Facebook let the Boogaloo movement use it as its home base, and there is all kinds of hateful content in FB groups especially that they refuse to moderate.

    I thought it would be fun to clone my voice using one of those generative AI tools that take a few seconds of you speaking and turn it into a reusable model. What came out was a weird version of my voice that had an American accent. Perhaps my weird mid-Atlantic half-British half-American maybe-Australian-sounding voice is too far outside expected models to clone easily? Is it possible that more "average" people are easier to fake?

    theheck,
    @theheck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ben I'd bet it's mostly trained on American voices. It probably needs many more hours of training on your voice specifically to do a better job.
