I hope everyone had a great holiday. I'm back in the saddle from a full week of slacking my ass off. Not gonna lie, it was great.

One of my projects today is to lay out strategies to continue building this community in '24 - including creative ways to establish our "identity" as a regional instance.

I call bullshit on "people don't want posts in languages they don't speak clogging up their timeline."

I think it's cool when I see people speaking other languages, because I like seeing people being people. I think being bothered by seeing other languages is extremely sus.

Translation tools aren't perfect, but are pretty good and it's fun to do And If someone is pushing a lot of content that I can't read out ... the mute button is literally right there.

You cannot understand U.S. politics today without understanding the damage 9/11 did to our collective imagination and our national conscience. The crass, violent nationalism. The pretext for the largest roll back of civil liberties in history. The useless, bloody, colonial wars based on fake pretexts. Militarism.

We, as a people, failed to have the courage of our convictions to our professed values in that moment. The result is visible around the globe.

Smaller Pride events in #Indiana have always attracted some protest - typically local church folk who think they are out "preaching to the unsaved."

This year, they've gotten measurably darker. I'm hearing more slurs and threats.

Recently I worked a festival that was circled for hours by a man with AR-15
& full battle-rattle, calling us pedos and child mutilators.

This alarming escalation is due to increasingly vicious anti-#LGBTQ political posturing.

People are following their leaders.

It's my first Friday in many years that I don't get paid to watch bill filings in #InLegis and the first crop dropped last night while my colleagues and I were out celebrating my new freedom. (All our phones erupted simultaneously at the restaurant lol).

But I'll still be tracking the legislative session and commenting here with a particular eye for direct attacks on the LGBTQ community.

Being on https://hoosier.social reminds me of when the social media was fun and and every interaction didn't require a fine-toothed comb and an entire comms team to keep from opening a Can of Worms.

I'm taking lessons I've learned from building up a presence on legacy social media. One of those? Instablocking anyone who makes me feel weird/bad for even a second. No debating/arguing.

May seem extreme but it's a coping mechanism I learned the hard way on those other sites.

The ban on #trans women in #chess is hitting me particularly hard.

I'm a chess enthusiast (in keeping with my careful curated rep as an expert strategist).

It's just this wtf moment that pulls the wind right out of my sails.

I know really well that lots of folks don't like us. But ... how are we ever gonna overcome a level of pure unhinged bigotry that says we can't be trusted play chess?

Obviously ALL women should be insulted by this move.

I really think #Mastodon needs a "local only" share option. It's frustrating, because I see the #fediverse as something whose very structure can be a powerful force for building real communities on the open Internet.

I wanna be able to announce fun activities for just our users! I wanna discuss and build consensus for decisions in-community.

Right now that's super hard for almost no reason I can see and would require our users to agree to use a whole other tool.

I've been assaulted by Nazis twice at work. I've had Nazi guns trained on me at work. I've had my name, face, and place of employment shared by Proud Boys, who've shown up to find me. I get hate mail (not just email -- real letters) regularly wishing me death.

I don't think those facts make my positions more/less correct and I dislike how Extremely Online Activist Culture encourages folks to use Nazi Violence Bona Fides to sneer about someone else's ethical positions.
