@Craftycat@megahertz@zdl In fact, there is plenty of high-quality evidence showing that masking offers some (obviously not complete) protection to the person wearing it. But you are correct that for many people, the most important reason is to protect others.
How do you think the switch from passive to active TV consumption has affected the medium? I wonder if it helps explain the rise of infinite sequels and catering to fandoms?
@ZachWeinersmith And yet, the streaming experience is regressing to be more like the cable experience of yore. It’s not clear whether the current direction, of having to subscribe to a service to watch a show, is viable long-term. Don't think any one knows which way this is heading…
On the ICC warrants for Hamas & Israeli leaders, one line of protest is that “Hamas are autocrats but Bibi is democratically elected.” Um, so what? Whatever you think of Israeli voting choices, only leaders can be held responsible for giving the orders amounting to “Go ahead, slaughter the innocents.” I honestly don’t get it.
@JaneSmith I would shed no tears over the deaths of Hamas fighters or leaders. It’s the tens of thousands of innocents and starving children that are the war crime. There can never be any excuse for that. I think both sets of ICC warrants are highly appropriate.
@jake4good Not gonna shed a tear for any dead Hamasniks, but killing tens of thousands of innocents, starving children etc, those are still war crimes for which there can be no excuse. Both sets of warrants were appropriate.
At the same time that bad-faith "pollers" are asking about #PyConUS masking, the attendee survey asks about it as well. But that survey only goes to attendees, meaning people put off by the requirement this year will not be asked. How do we get a complete view of the entire population of potential attendees?
@nedbat I suppose one might be abstractly interested in what proportion of PyPeople are anti-science and willing to endanger their fellow humans, but empirically the answer is “small enough to not get in the way”, which is cheering.
@lzg It needs to have some of (a) beach (b) moderate weather (c) excellent food (d) walkability (e) nearby nature (f) safe streets (g) good public transit.
This is why I chose to live in Vancouver, but thinking about Melbourne and Barcelona makes me smile. Surprised nobody mentioned Hong Kong (not now, a few years ago).
@cheeaun Everything here is a matter of taste, no? Your presentation is definitely more information-dense, which is good (see Tufte). A lot of people won’t even notice but that’s OK.
BTW I notice that phanpy sometimes says "Home" and sometimes "Following" for the same thing. Should I file an issue? (I prefer Following but consistency is good.)
@cheeaun It's an interesting problem. “Home” doesn’t say what it is, it says (sort of) where it is. It could reasonably be called “Start” or “Latest” something like that. “Following” does say what it is (I like that) and you’re right, Threads highlighted that. Except for I’m pretty sure that Threads “Following” page is still algorithmically modified, not just chronological.
FWIW I occasionally see outbursts on social and mainstream media about the awfulness of reckless scofflaw cyclists, a threat to anyone on any sidewalk. On the occasions I've interacted with these people, 100% have been regular drivers who never cycle. Correlation != causation, but…
By the end of the day, the Karen Army Group is in control of the entire left bank of the Ayeyarwady bend; only about a third of the strength of the Nakhon Ratchasima Army Group managed to escape. Kashyap tells the troops this is the first time they do this well on the offensive.
