Middle-aged, love the Bay Area, can’t figure out what became of the country I thought I knew. Guess I didn’t really know it. Mostly politics but also outdoors and local interest - usually not more than a few posts a day will try not to overwhelm your feed. I am extremely worried about the future of our country so if you follow for pics and local interest that might get old for you.

The Washington Post knew - in 2001 - that the home of a Supreme Court Justice flew a flag that supported the violent overthrow of the government, and decided it was not newsworthy based on the uncorroborared and plainly ridiculous assertion that the flying of the flag was not political. Our mainstream media is broken- how could they have been so credulous and naive? How can it not be a story that the home of a member of the highest court in the land is flying a flag associated with a violent storming of the U.S. Capitol in an effort to execute the Vice President and members of Congress?! What else are they not telling us? Seriously our elites need to get their heads out of their own arses. https://wapo.st/4dS1BCf

Wholeheartedly agree with this.
As an aside, I happened to meet the author while he and I were canvassing in 2020. Nice guy. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/03/opinion/global-billionaires-tax.html?unlocked_article_code=1.pU0.wjUD.cN_k7UjmOnvL&smid=url-share

I don’t think this will protect us if Trump takes power again, but it is worth a shot, and seems like a good idea. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/08/us/trump-president-troops-riots-protests.html?unlocked_article_code=1.jE0.oUEO.8Tbum0bOSK4g&smid=url-share

A bizarre kind of political journalism: It’s “reporting” in the sense that a reporter goes to a place and collects impressions and interviews. But the result is a kind of tendentious collage that entirely obscures that which it ostensibly set out to illuminate.

That the entire Republican House is now unanimously behind Trump and election denial ansolutely terrifies me. I mean I am talking about moving savings to cash renewing passport getting visa to safer countries kind of terrifies me. I think as a nation we are sleep-walking toward a very dark place. I will try to stop it with giving voting writing letters protesting canvassing until Nov 24 and in the mean time will be prepared to leave this fascist country by January 20 2025.

WaPo editorial board argues that Democrats should help Republicans without demanding big public concessions in order to ease Republican worries. Honestly, it is almost self-spoofing. And you also see it in news articles, such as when they describe the Republican decision to promote extremists as a “math problem” or as an immovable fact of life. It is a choice, and choices can change. But they won’t change if Democrats cave.

Went backpacking in Yosemite last week and finally got around to organizing pics. It was rainy in parts but wonderful - actually was the rainy day was one of our favorite days as we stayed in and cozy and read books all day. Very grateful it is there and we were able to go.

Waterfall maybe 25 feet high tumbling over vertical rock cliff into green rocky shimmery pool in very narrow little gorge or grotto, with bare tree like sentinel above waterfall and green trees beneath white cloudy sky with patches of blue.
Hiker on rocky overlook over valley with patches of green trees looking over mountains in distance below crystal clear blue sky with spotty white clouds throwing shadows.

Do I have this right?
Isaacson's book isn't even out yet and already it appears Musk lied to him, Musk is changing his story now, or Isaacson got it wrong. That's just one page.

@petergleick If I were an out-of-control fascist billionaire I would be delighted to have Isaacson tell my story. A more credulous naive biographer would be hard to find.

“This should be decided at the ballot box” is such an utterly deranged thing to say when the reason why we are in this situation is that Trump and his enablers didn’t respect the decision at the ballot box and instead engaged in a vast conspiracy to end constitutional government.

tiredguy99,
@tiredguy99@sfba.social avatar

@tzimmer_history you know better than I but I believe this is a familiar dynamic in history that has led to increasing radicalism violence and even genocide. Like someone said, when they scream about so called groomers etc , “What is it that they are giving themselves permission to do?” The answer is: nothing good.

@petergleick I get his point but it is a reactionary centrist framing that misleadingly minimizes the importance of the issue. As you know better than I, it is an existential issue for humans, and it grieves me to see a self-professed liberal frame it this way. To me, a culture war sounds like some BS like the ‘war on Christmas’ - not an issue causing starvation, mass extinctions, war and the death of entire ecosystems.

I can't get over the story of the Texas professor suspended for criticizing the Lt.Governor. This is how fu**ed up this is:

The conservative student should have known better; her conservative mother should have known better; the Lt.Gov should have known better; the Lt.Gov's staff should have known better; and the University should have known better.
Any ONE of them should have shut down the complaint and stood up for free speech. But every one of them went full fascist.

Beautiful but hot backpacking trip to Hetch Hetchy. Video does not do justice to power and force of water but if you watch with sound on it helps. Grateful I could go. A much needed adventure to provide break from the grind of day-to-day worries.
